Elyes

This year my husband and I became addicted to the TV show “Scorpion” on CBS (great program, would highly recommend). The guy who plays the lead character has a very interesting and lovely sounding first name, Elyes, which I am completely set on using for our son. It’s the perfect mix of masculine and cute, as in it would work for a young boy, a teenager, and a grown man. It is pronounced [name_f]ELL[/name_f]-ee-iss ([name_f]Ellie[/name_f]-iss, like [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] with an S) and I just love it. I was wondering what others’ thoughts are, as it is a very uncommon name that many have not even heard before. I’m not even entirely sure of the origin. I’m aware that there would potentially be major issues with spelling and pronounciation, but I’m willing to risk that because I love the name so much - it’s worth it! Thoughts greatly appreciated.

I actually kind of like it. I don’t think it’s that obscure sounding because [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] and [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] are so common however I do think there might be a bit of a problem with pronunciation. I would definitely consider using it but just as a middle name.

I definitely want to use it as a first name, I feel like I’ve found the perfect name after months and months of searching! I just love the way it sounds.

It sounds lovely, but I must admit just seeing the name stumped me on pronunciation until I read your post. I also wouldn’t have a clue how to spell it just hearing it spoken. So yes lots of corrections would be unavoidable having a name like that. But it is a very charming name!

I love names like this, which are unique yet fitting. Go for it!

It’s very common in [name_f]France[/name_f]. We say [name_m]Eli[/name_m]-eh-ss. I’m not huge fan but it’s a nice name. It’s an arabic name.

Thank you for the feedback! I am pretty set on using it!

My first thought was ‘Hell, yes’ but in a Cockney accent. I’d opt for [name_u]Elias[/name_u].

lol, when I first saw it in writing I thought it was [name_f]Ell[/name_f] - yes too. But with the correct pronounciation it’s such a lovely sounding name. I don’t like the sound of [name_u]Elias[/name_u] nearly as much.

The first time I saw the name “[name_u]Elias[/name_u]” written down, I actually thought it was pronounced this way! I do love the sound of this name, however, I find I really hate the spelling. “Elyes” looks like a typo for [name_f]Elyse[/name_f] at worst, and, at best, a name that should be pronounced “[name_f]El[/name_f]-yes.” That being said, I don’t think that should stop you from using the name, maybe just play around with the spelling.

In a quick min, here’s what I was able to come up with:
Elius
Ellius
[name_m]Ellias[/name_m] (Perhaps adding an extra “L” to [name_u]Elias[/name_u] will let you get away with a different pronunciation)
Eleeus (not sure if this is better or worse than Elyes, but at least people will pause an ask for a pronunciation rather than just assuming “el-yes”)

I love Elyes, go for it.

NB: I love Elyes [name_m]Gabel[/name_m], the actor you’re referring to. A relative back in the UK is a huge fan of his (Elyes is British), he was in some medical TV show over there for years, and she has been a fan of him since then. I believe she plans to use the name Elyes one day herself.

Oh, I love it! I had never heard Elyes before. It’s so handsome

Awesome! I am a big fan of Elyes [name_m]Gabel[/name_m] he’s so attractive and the British accent just makes him even better! He’s got a great personality too, from what I can see. I told my husband I’ll take him and he can have Elyes’ girlfriend, [name_f]Katharine[/name_f] [name_m]McPhee[/name_m]! :stuck_out_tongue: jk. We do like to joke though. And hubby is on board with the name choice. Naming is a huge deal and I want to be absolutely certain but I do think I’ve found the one!

Also, Elyes [name_m]Gabel[/name_m] was born and raised in UK but has a very mixed race background ([name_f]Indian[/name_f], Algerian, Dutch, [name_m]French[/name_m] and English I believe) so it’s very difficult to pinpoint the origins of the name as there are mixed results online. The most popular theory seems to be that it is of Arabic origin and a cousin/variant of [name_u]Elias[/name_u].

Bump! My due date is fast approaching and I would love more opinions! I’m almost certain I’m going to use it but any input is great. My only other choice is [name_m]Isaac[/name_m].

To me it looks like [name_f]Elyse[/name_f] was typed wrong, I would pronounce it just like [name_u]Elias[/name_u].
NMS but it is a Hebrew name so it could work if you’re ok with it.
I do love [name_m]Isaac[/name_m]

I said the pronunciation was [name_m]Eli[/name_m]-eh-s but I meant [name_f]Ell[/name_f]-yes. Sorry. This is how my friends (algerian) say it.

I think it’s a nice name and if you like it, go for it!

I actually really like it.

Thanks guys! My only concern is the spelling and pronounciation thing but I don’t want to spell it any other way. I want to spell it like Elyes [name_m]Gabel[/name_m]. Elies, Ellius, Ellios, [name_m]Elyas[/name_m] just don’t seem right!

First off, I love Scorpion! I am right there with you!

I would use Elyes in a heartbeat. I think spelling it like the actor will help give a point of reference. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if somebody has never heard of Elyes [name_m]Gabel[/name_m], you could say “I think there is an actor called Elyes [name_m]Gabel[/name_m]” and hopefully it will jog their memory for pronunciation the next time you see them. The spelling isn’t that hard after doing it once so I would say forge ahead with Elyes, spelled like that!

Good luck!
