Elyse and Mallory....too close to "Family Ties" sitcom

I am currently posting another thread for my sister… A new name she is considering is [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] for her baby due in 8 weeks…

Her main concern is that her daughter’s names would be too closely tied to the 80’s sitcom “Family Ties”. I told her that if she had a fourth child and named him [name_u]Keaton[/name_u] or [name_u]Alex[/name_u], there might be concern, but she has nothing to worry about.

What do you think?
[name_m]Brooks[/name_m] (boy), [name_f]Elyse[/name_f], and [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] (future baby)

I confess I did see the “Family Ties” connection when I saw the two names together (and that was BEFORE I even read the whole subject line…“too close to “Family Ties” sitcom”. I remember the female character of [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] being a simpleton so it’s not a great association at all. I would be concerned with other issues as well.

1 The meaning of [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] “unfortunate”, “unlucky”
2 [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] is “dated” to the 1980’s period whereas [name_f]Elyse[/name_f] is a vintage name.
3 [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] is “unisex” whereas [name_f]Elyse[/name_f] is clearly feminine.

Thank you, [name_u]Mischa[/name_u]! These are great things to consider…that’s why I am still intrigued with this site (although I am done naming children!). My sister lives in rural middle [name_u]America[/name_u] (small farming community)… I am certain very few people will even notice unisex ([name_f]Mallory[/name_f]) vs. vintage ([name_f]Elyse[/name_f]). Great insight! Much appreciated

I never would have caught the Family Ties reference, and I’m an 80s kid. I did recognize [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] as being tied to the show, but for me the name is closely linked to the [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Sitters’ Club first and foremost.

I’m not a huge fan of [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] or the meaning or the potential nn [name_u]Mal[/name_u], but if your sister loves it, I wouldn’t be dissuaded by the Family Ties link.

It sounds liked she is just playing around with the name right now, but if she falls in love, I don’t think the connection is a big deal.

More disturbing though is that I saw “Family Ties” listed under “Classic TV” on Hulu! Oh, I am getting old.
