"Emerson" for a boy

I am due in [name]August[/name] and if we have a boy my husband wants to name the child [name]Emerson[/name] (this is my husband’s middle name). I like the name but am worried that it has become a girl’s name or it sounds a little too studious for a boy (we are a fun loving, casual family). I realy like the nn [name]Sonny[/name] for [name]Emerson[/name] and it sounds good with our last name (starts with an S, two syllables). What do you think?

I like [name]Emerson[/name] and don’t think it sounds at all like a girl’s name. It seems soft and strong at the same time, but definitely masculine. I don’t think I would have thought of [name]Sonny[/name], but it’s cute and fun.

I love the name [name]Emerson[/name]. It is my female cousin’s surname, and I was always envious of the name! I think of it more as a boy’s name because of [name]Ralph[/name] [name]Waldo[/name] [name]Emerson[/name], despite more girls being named [name]Emerson[/name] of late. Still, I love it on a boy.

I completely agree with the pp. I have considered [name]Emerson[/name] for a boy as well and I love it. I do tie it to boys more than girls because of [name]Ralph[/name] [name]Waldo[/name] [name]Emerson[/name], just as bluedahlia suggested. I think its a great choice!

I love the name [name]Emerson[/name] for a boy! My Great Uncle was named [name]Emerson[/name] and died a heroic death in WWII. It is a strong name and great choice!

I love [name]Emerson[/name] for a boy! There’s nothing feminine about it to me. I really like the idea of using the nickname [name]Sonny[/name] - very retro cool.

[name]Emerson[/name] is a great name for a boy! [name]Sonny[/name] is a great nickname. I don’t think it’s girly at all.

[name]Emerson[/name] is only recently popular for girls. Ranking around 315 for girls and 435 for boys it is not likely that a boy [name]Emerson[/name] would come across too many girl [name]Emerson[/name]'s and even if he did it is still what I think of as a unisex name with roughly equal numbers of boys and girls sharing the name.

I love the choice of [name]Emerson[/name] for a boy. I don’t think it is too studious – just intelligent enough. It remains very unisex and very much a viable choice for males.

I like the nn [name]Emmett[/name], but if you like [name]Sonny[/name], go with that.
