Emerson Rose, Brooke Riley, Skylar Rose, Norah Joy

Still mulling over names for daughter number 2 on the way. Here are some questions on each name:

[name_u]Emerson[/name_u]- I know a lot of people think of this as a boy name, but I think of girl when I hear it. I don’t love the nickname of [name_f]Emmy[/name_f], so would that stop you, or would you just politely correct people and say “we call her [name_u]Emerson[/name_u].” Also, just how do you feel about this name in general? Husband isn’t in love with it but says it’s “fine.” The love for this name also is because I love the writings of [name_m]Ralph[/name_m] [name_m]Waldo[/name_m] [name_u]Emerson[/name_u]. Would you use a name your husband was just “fine” with? The only one he is crazy about is [name_f]Norah[/name_f], and then [name_u]Brooke[/name_u].

[name_u]Brooke[/name_u]- I lovvvve nature names, and this is the most straight and narrow one I can think of that I’m shocked my husband agreed to, because he goes by the rules of “no flowers, not months, no seasons.” lol. I know it’s a little 80s, but I get such a down to earth vibe with this name. The only things stopping me are the struggling to find a good middle name that starts with R or M and flows well, is it too popular/common, and our last name is Konnelly. Would the “kuh” sound at the end of [name_u]Brooke[/name_u] running into the “kuh” sound in Konnelly enough to make you not use it?

[name_u]Skylar[/name_u]- This is my guilty pleasure. I so can picture our little blue eyed [name_u]Sky[/name_u] (all blue eyes in our family), but I’m not sure if this name feels over and done with. I guess you can say I’m a little stuck in the 90s taste-wise, and I’m having a hard time hopping on the bring old lady names back wagon. Husband also doesn’t love this one, but would give it to me if I fought for it.

[name_f]Norah[/name_f]- I actually think this name looks BEAUTIFUL written down, especially with the H at the end. And it has a wonderful meaning of shinging light. But something feels unnatural when I say it out loud. I definitely don’t hate it, and it seems to be a cult favorite…[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it would grow on me if I just used it to make him happy and since people would mostly seem to love her name?

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think names have to have the same feeling as a sibling, such as the both should be classic, trendy, or wild?

Any other suggestions for known, but not widely used names?

Would you be open to [name_f]Em[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_u]Emerson[/name_u]? I admit that I think of a boy when I hear of it, but your reasons are good. If you are expecting to have any more children, though, [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] might be a good one to save because it can be used for either gender.

I like [name_u]Brooke[/name_u], and I wouldn’t worry about it being too 80’s. If you wanted to be more modern and name her [name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u] nn [name_u]Brooke[/name_u], that could also work.

[name_u]Skylar[/name_u] is my least favorite of your four, but I do like the nickname [name_u]Sky[/name_u]. I wouldn’t say that that name is too 90’s (I was born in the 90’s and don’t know ANY Skylars).

I personally love the name [name_f]Norah[/name_f], and the “h” definitely makes it more unique. I think the name would grow on you, but it’s also becoming quite popular, if that’s something you want to avoid. I’d strongly recommend choosing something that both you and your husband like/love instead of settling for one.

Also, I don’t think sib names have to be too similar. I wouldn’t name one [name_f]Elektra[/name_f] and one [name_f]Jane[/name_f], for example, but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with [name_f]Serena[/name_f] and [name_u]Riley[/name_u].

[name_u]Emerson[/name_u] - [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] is currently much more popular for girls, so you are are not alone in thinking it works better for a girl. I would only use it if you are ok with her being called [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] or [name_f]Em[/name_f]. I think it’s impossible to control nicknames and she could even decide herself that she wants to be called [name_f]Emmy[/name_f]. I would only use a name with an obvious or popular nn if I at least liked it ok, even if I myself would not use it or encourage it.

[name_u]Brooke[/name_u] - I like [name_u]Brooke[/name_u] a lot and know a [name_u]Brooke[/name_u] with a last name that starts with a hard C sound – I think it works totally fine! I really like that it fits with your love of nature names AND your husband likes it! I don’t think it is too 90s. I do not like [name_u]Riley[/name_u] myself. Why do you need a middle beginning with R or M? Maybe you could consider other first letters to find a middle you love?

[name_u]Skyler[/name_u] - I’m not a fan. I tend to like nature names and think many are beautiful & classy but this one is neither for me. I prefer [name_u]Sky[/name_u], but don’t love that either.

[name_f]Norah[/name_f] - I think [name_f]Norah[/name_f] is a beautiful name but too popular for me. I think it will likely become more popular. I would not hope that a name grows on you!! [name_m]Just[/name_m] because other people think it’s beautiful does not make it the right name for your daughter. There are a ton of names that are objectively beautiful & that other people love, that I do not like or for some reason do not feel right to be. Unless you start really liking or loving [name_f]Norah[/name_f] before your daughter arrives, I would not choose it!

[name_u]Brooke[/name_u] is a great name and one both you and your husband like, it seems like the best choice of your current names to me:-)

Thank you! I made a mistake- I meant that I need a middle name that starts with either an R or a J, because we are trying to honor family members. I’m struggling with [name_u]Brooke[/name_u]- some ideas are [name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_u]Riley[/name_u] like I said, but not sure [name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_u]Riley[/name_u] Konnelly sounds great. [name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_f]Renee[/name_f], [name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_f]Joelle[/name_f], and then there’s [name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f], which [name_f]Rose[/name_f] was my great grandmother’s name, but not sure [name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is too abrupt, what do you think?

I think I could warm to tolerate nickname [name_f]Em[/name_f] or [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] for [name_u]Emerson[/name_u], and I’m going to leave [name_f]Norah[/name_f] on the table to see how I feel when the time comes. I’m so hot and cold with [name_u]Skylar[/name_u] because I love the sound, but I agree that it’s not really going to age great.

[name_f]Norah[/name_f]'s popularity does concern me- I only know 2 other little [name_f]Nora[/name_f]'s, not even in my social circle, but these boards keep reminding me how on the rise the name is. Hmmmmm…Keep brainstorming!

I love all of these!
Here are some middle names for [name_u]Brooke[/name_u] starting with R and J:
[name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_u]Reagan[/name_u]
[name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_u]Jordan[/name_u]
[name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_f]Renee[/name_f]
[name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f]
[name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_f]Jolene[/name_f]
[name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_u]Ruby[/name_u]
[name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_u]Josie[/name_u]/[name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
[name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_f]Josette[/name_f]
[name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]
[name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_f]Juliana[/name_f]
[name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_f]Ramona[/name_f]
[name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_f]Rhea[/name_f]

Of your choices, I personally like [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] the most. [name_f]Norah[/name_f] is lovely, but I’m kind of in the same boat as you— it just sounds a bit strange out loud. The one issue I can think of with [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] is that it’s also a fairly popular name; it’s ranked only slightly lower than [name_f]Norah[/name_f], so if you choose either one of those, you’re still giving your child a name that’s reasonably popular and might spike in popularity in the near future.

As for your husband’s opinion, I’d suggest maybe wait if you can to have the baby and spend some time with them first to see what fits her. That’s kind of obvious, but it could be the deal breaker you need. I also don’t think that sibling names have to be super matchy in terms of style. That’s just a personal preference thing. If you like the names and can tolerate the hypothetical sibling names together, then that’s what matters.

All in all, I don’t think you could go wrong with any of your choices. Best of luck!

[name_u]Emerson[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] – Nice name, but I sometimes think that [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] is going to be the [name_u]Taylor[/name_u] of this generation. That has both pros and cons. Also, this is the name of [name_f]Teri[/name_f] Hatcher’s daughter. Again, nothing wrong with that, but some people may catch it, so thought I’d note.

[name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_u]Riley[/name_u] – My favorite from your combos. Though I do definitely prefer [name_u]Brooke[/name_u] with a flashier middle ([name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f], [name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f]?).

[name_u]Skylar[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] – Nothing wrong with this name, but I just don’t love it. When I think of this name I see blue and pink juxtaposed beside one another. To me, this name is almost more color than word.

[name_f]Norah[/name_f] [name_f]Joy[/name_f] – Very pretty. Makes me think of [name_f]Norah[/name_f] [name_m]Jones[/name_m] because [name_f]Joy[/name_f] and [name_m]Jones[/name_m] start with the same sound. Have you considered [name_f]Noelle[/name_f] at all? I know it’s a “[name_u]Christmas[/name_u]” name, but it starts with a strong No sound just like [name_f]Norah[/name_f], so may appeal to you.

[name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] Konnelly works, but I don’t love it. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] Konnelly or [name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_f]Rosa[/name_f] Konnelly? I like many of the suggestions above including [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] & [name_f]Julianna[/name_f] & [name_f]Rhea[/name_f]. I also love [name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_f]Julia[/name_f] Konnelly & [name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_f]Jocelyn[/name_f] is pretty too.

I think the nn [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] & [name_f]Em[/name_f] are cute & I think you could really warm to them if they are attached to your daughter and her full name is a name you love.

I think it’s great to keep brainstorming but it might be that she makes your final final decision for you when you meet her!

[name_u]Brooke[/name_u] and [name_u]Skylar[/name_u] seem to be as more 2000’s baby names. Might I suggest [name_f]Norah[/name_f] [name_u]Emerson[/name_u]? It combines the two names you and your husband like the most.

I’m also with the thinking that a name that both you and your husband really like would be a good choice. And suggestions not yet made for R and J include:

[name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_f]Rayna[/name_f]
[name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_f]Rosia[/name_f]
[name_u]Brooke[/name_u] Jina
[name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_f]Jemima[/name_f]

However, honouring a family member is a lovely thing to do and [name_u]Brook[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] does not really sound abrupt.

What if you make a combination second name? Rosejoy or Joyrose?

[name_u]Brooke[/name_u] Rosejoy [name_u]Connelly[/name_u]?

[name_u]Emerson[/name_u] - I think of it as a boy name, but it is unisex, so there’s no right or wrong. And if you gently correct people if they call her [name_f]Emmy[/name_f], I don’t think that’ll be a problem. I actually quite like it.

[name_u]Brooke[/name_u] - have always liked this name…especially as its a nature name. I think the way it sounds with your last name is fine. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_f]Louise[/name_f]?

[name_u]Skylar[/name_u] - I like any version of this name, although I don’t love it. Nickname [name_u]Sky[/name_u] is cute, although prefer spelling [name_f]Skye[/name_f]. Really cute with blue eyes!

[name_f]Norah[/name_f] - this name is okay. The ‘h’ on the end always makes me think of Billabong. The meaning’s good. I think it would definitely grow on you…most names do!

My favourite is definitely [name_u]Brooke[/name_u]!

I really like [name_u]Brooke[/name_u]. [name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_u]Riley[/name_u] or better yet, [name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_u]Emerson[/name_u].

[name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] would be a beautiful name. Still honors your family member and has the R you want. By far my favorite. [name_f]Norah[/name_f] [name_f]Joy[/name_f] would be my second choice.

[name_f]Norah[/name_f] [name_f]Joy[/name_f] is absolutely beautiful! [name_u]Brooke[/name_u] would be my second choice. I think it’s very pretty.

I dislike [name_u]Skylar[/name_u] and I detest [name_u]Emerson[/name_u]. If you like [name_f]Emmy[/name_f], how about:

[name_f]Emilia[/name_f]
[name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]
[name_f]Emily[/name_f]
[name_f]Emma[/name_f]
[name_f]Gemma[/name_f]
[name_m]Just[/name_m] [name_f]Emmy[/name_f]

Thank you! So I am leaning towards [name_u]Brooke[/name_u], because it is a name that I love, that my husband actually likes too, which is a miracle! I was thinking [name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_f]Renee[/name_f] because [name_f]Renee[/name_f] means “reborn,” which is kind of nice since I got pregnant with this baby right after a miscarriage. I’m not in love with [name_f]Renee[/name_f], but the meaning is good, and it actually has a decent flow.

Another suggestion someone made to me was [name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_u]Rae[/name_u]. Funny enough, I was also going to ask you all what you thought of the name [name_f]Rachel[/name_f]. I never really though much of it, as there were a lot of them in my age group, but when I really think of the word, it has a very pretty sound, I love that it ends in an L, it is common enough to satisfy my husband, yet I could call her [name_u]Rae[/name_u] which I love. I would do [name_u]Rae[/name_u] as a first name, but he doesn’t like it, so this would be the compromise. But I just can help feeling torn that the name [name_f]Rachel[/name_f] itself is just underwhelming, while still beautiful? What do you think? If I did [name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_u]Rae[/name_u], I’d get my [name_u]Rae[/name_u] fix in, just not sure of the two one syllable names together.

So thoughts on these please:
[name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_f]Renee[/name_f] Konnelly
[name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_u]Rae[/name_u] Konnelly (two one syllables next to each other which I don’t love, but to me this works better than [name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]?)
[name_f]Rachel[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] Konnolly (I know some people hate alliteration, but I’m a BIG fan of it).
