Emil - thoughts?

The name [name_m]Emil[/name_m] crept onto my top 10 list recently. It ticks a lot of boxes, being incredibly simple and internationally familiar.

I guess it would tend to be pronounced differently by different people depending on what they were used to. We would say [name_f]EM[/name_f]-ill, as simple as can be and exactly what it looks like if you say it in the most English way possible. But I’m sure em-EEL and aim-EEL would happen a lot. They all sound pretty similar though and family would quickly learn to say [name_f]EM[/name_f]-ill, so I don’t think I care too much. But do you think it could get annoying for a boy/man named [name_m]Emil[/name_m] (bearing in mind our pronunciation is the only one where we live)?

It’s really popular here, not at all popular in the UK but still recognisable, right?

What do you reckon, do you like the name (with mn [name_m]Karl[/name_m])?

I like [name_m]Emil[/name_m], but spelled [name_m]Emile[/name_m]. [name_m]Emile[/name_m] [name_m]Karl[/name_m] works well.

I can’t (and don’t want to) change the spelling, but thankyou for your thoughts

Anybody else think anything?

[name_m]Emil[/name_m] is beautiful written, but I’d assume it was pronounced “Eh-MEEL.” Not wild about the “[name_f]EM[/name_f]-ill” pronunciation - it sounds mumbly to me. Also, a lot of English speakers have a way of pronouncing [name_m]Karl[/name_m] “CAR-ull,” so “[name_f]EM[/name_f]-ill KAR-ull” is awkward to my ears. Eh-MEEL KAR-ull is better, in terms of meter.
Here are some that feel similar: [name_m]Emrys[/name_m], [name_u]Elias[/name_u], [name_m]Imre[/name_m], Ehmet

From your signature, Ingimar is so lovely. I don’t know much about Icelandic names, but found Erlingur/[name_m]Erling[/name_m] and Arnór, which I find beautiful… maybe because they sound like the English words “air linger” and “ardor.”

[name_m]Emil[/name_m] feels very Eastern to me. I don’t like it with [name_m]Karl[/name_m] because they are both so short.

I like [name_m]Emil[/name_m], it’s a handsome name… I like [name_m]Karl[/name_m] but I don’t think it works well with [name_m]Emil[/name_m]. I don’t think it would really have pronunciation issues.

I always pronounced it with a long e…e-mil…I could probably learn to make the adjustment to [name_f]Em[/name_f]-il though. That being said, I do not like it paired wth [name_m]Karl[/name_m].

[name_m]Emil[/name_m] is nice… I like [name_u]Emmett[/name_u], too. I think [name_m]Karl[/name_m] [name_m]Emil[/name_m] sounds better than [name_m]Emil[/name_m] [name_m]Karl[/name_m]. [name_m]Just[/name_m] my opinion, though!

Thanks, team. Looks like the overall consensus is perhaps not with [name_m]Karl[/name_m]… So maybe I will move [name_m]Emil[/name_m] to the ‘long time in the future, maybe never, second son’ pile, because first son is Something [name_m]Karl[/name_m] G______son, in which ‘something’ must be on the official Icelandic name list (not the law for me, but I don’t want to make life difficult for my children).

[name_m]Karl[/name_m] would be pronounced KAHL by my English family, not KAR-ull, though. Icelanders say: http://www.ivona.com/en/?tk=hMOjeYKWun (hope that link works, it’s a text to speech site I found recently that seems surprisingly good).

Erlingur is lovely, I think I’m going to put that on my long list  I half-knew a guy called Erlingur a few years ago who was very beautiful, so I have a good image attached to that name.

[name_f]My[/name_f] friend has a little brother called Emill and he is adorable! Their mother is [name_m]French[/name_m] and she says [name_f]Em[/name_f]-eel but as far as I know everyone else calls him [name_f]Em[/name_f]-ill.

I pronounce [name_m]Emil[/name_m] “em-EEL.” I’m from the US. I really like it and think it’s a handsome name.
