Emilia nm

My husband and I are having the most difficult time picking out our baby’s name. We’re due in a few weeks.

Our top pick so far is [name_f]Emilia[/name_f]. I do like the name alone - but I’ve been seeing the name [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] pop up here a lot and wonder if it’s going to be popular (I live in the US and while we pronounce the names slightly different they sound pretty much the same). we may end up calling her by a nickname if [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] or [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] ends up being popular.

Which nickname sounds the best for [name_f]Emilia[/name_f]?

Btw - we have two sons: [name_m]Liam[/name_m] and [name_u]Logan[/name_u].
Our nieces name is [name_f]Leila[/name_f] (lay-la)

As nicknames we like:
[name_f]Lily[/name_f]
[name_f]Emmy[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilla[/name_f]
[name_f]Lia[/name_f] ([name_f]Leah[/name_f])

Is [name_f]Lilla[/name_f] too close to my neices name? Any other thoughts on nicknames??

Thanks a bunch!

I’ve always liked [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] nn [name_f]Mila[/name_f]. Also [name_f]Mia[/name_f] or [name_f]Milly[/name_f]/[name_f]Millie[/name_f].

From your choices, I think [name_f]Lia[/name_f] and [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] make the most sense. I don’t really see [name_f]Lily[/name_f] as a nn for [name_f]Emilia[/name_f], and [name_f]Lilla[/name_f] does seem quite close to [name_f]Leila[/name_f].

Good luck!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] currently ranks #15 in the US and [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] ranks #164. Both are still rising in popularity.

I think [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] or [name_f]Milly[/name_f] are the most intuitive nicknames for [name_f]Emilia[/name_f].

I agree with @Emsky and also really like [name_f]Mila[/name_f] (pronounced Me-la). From your list I like [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] and [name_f]Lia[/name_f] (not pronounced [name_f]Leah[/name_f] as I do not see that as a nickname for [name_f]Emilia[/name_f]) the most, but I don’t think [name_f]Lia[/name_f] works with [name_m]Liam[/name_m] and [name_u]Logan[/name_u].

I think [name_f]Lilla[/name_f] and [name_f]Leila[/name_f] are too close and rhymy. I would not want to nickname my child [name_f]Lilla[/name_f] knowing a niece has a name so similar. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you want all your children to have L’s?

I adore [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] as an alternative to [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]. I say them differently [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] is “uh-meal-ee-uh” whereas [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] is “em-eel-ee-uh”. I also adore the nicknames galore with [name_f]Emilia[/name_f]. I wouldn’t worry about popularity because the distinctive nickname options you have will help you make the name “your own”. If it matters at all, I’m a teacher and I have only met one [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] in 15 years on the job. So it may not be as popular as it seems. Here are the nicknames I like for [name_f]Emilia[/name_f]:
[name_f]Emmie[/name_f]
[name_f]Emma[/name_f]
[name_f]Lia[/name_f]
[name_f]Mila[/name_f]

My thought would be to steer clear of [name_f]Emma[/name_f] as that is a very popular first name and [name_f]Lia[/name_f] as it shares the same first letter as your boys’ names. I would pick [name_f]Emmie[/name_f] because I think it’s a very unique nickname that you almost never hear and it’s darling! But [name_f]Mila[/name_f] is equally unexpected and works with all the sounds found in [name_f]Emilia[/name_f].

[name_f]Emilia[/name_f] is lovely, and though it sounds very similar to [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] it is pronounced slightly differently: “eh-MEE-lee-uh” vs “uh-MEE-lee-uh”. I like it better than [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] - it looks and sounds more sophisticated to me. I like [name_f]Em[/name_f], [name_f]Emmy[/name_f], [name_f]Mila[/name_f] and [name_f]Mia[/name_f] as nicknames.

Thanks for the replies!!

I agree the nickname is probably too close to my neices name to use. Bummer.

I think my husband is the problem lol. He seems to be drawn to the shorter names but then says they’re too nick-namey. Ex - [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], etc. (he wants something that will “grow” with her) so then we try to think of a longer version of the names and he doesn’t like them because they’re too “frilly”. He’s doesn’t like any of the common names that go with lily. I don’t think it matters - if we’re probably going to call her by a nickname anyhow then what does it really matter if she has a long name that he’s not super into. i just don’t know what to do to be honest. Have a “formal” name that he will kind of like but never use except on job applications when’s she’s older and then a nickname that has nothing to do with it?? Seems silly to me. That’s potentially three names for the poor kid. I’m almost to the point of not even wanting to name her. I feel like we’ve gone through the same names over and over again. Gah

Sorry I’m completely venting now ”

I do appreciate your input though. I think I’d better sit down with him and point these facts out to him and see what he thinks.
