Emilia or Amelia

It’s getting close now and we still don’t have a name for little girl. My husband didn’t like any of my suggestions, but he’s decided all of a sudden that he likes [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] but he prefers the [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] spelling. We pronounce them the same, but I know they are two different names as far as meaning and origin go. I like [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] better, he likes [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]. Which one do you prefer?
Middle name will be [name_f]Mary[/name_f]- still haven’t decided if we want to do two middle names. I really want to keep it simple and use one, but there are so many cute middle names I like more than [name_f]Mary[/name_f] ([name_f]Luna[/name_f], [name_u]Skye[/name_u], [name_f]Faye[/name_f], etc) but we are using [name_f]Mary[/name_f] to honor both of our mothers.

Other names we both like (this is after a lot of compromising) that if you could also share opinions on I would appreciate:
[name_u]Emery[/name_u]
[name_f]Arabella[/name_f]
[name_f]Madeline[/name_f]
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]
[name_f]Aria[/name_f]
[name_f]Chloe[/name_f]
[name_f]Katherine[/name_f]
[name_f]Grace[/name_f]
[name_f]Audrey[/name_f]/[name_f]Aubree[/name_f] - I love [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] but I a) can’t see it on a baby/little girl and b) have a good friend named [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] so that might be a little weird. she wouldnt mind but i dont know if i would feel comfortable. [name_f]Aubree[/name_f] is the opposite- i can’t see it on an adult. But we like both.

Thanks

I prefer [name_f]Emilia[/name_f]. It’s gorgeous!

I also like [name_f]Madeline[/name_f], [name_f]Chloe[/name_f], [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] and [name_f]Grace[/name_f]. [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f] would be really pretty.

I pronounce [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] and [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] slightly differently. If you’re saying [name_m]Ah[/name_m]-MEEL-ee-ah or [name_m]Ah[/name_m]-MEEL-yah, I’d probably go with [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] to save yourself some spelling and pronunciation explanations. For me, [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] has more of an Eh sound up front, like in [name_f]Emily[/name_f] or [name_f]Emma[/name_f].
Looks-wise, they both look pretty written down.

From your list, I like [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] a lot, and could see [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] or [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] working well if you don’t have a MN yet.

[name_f]LOVE[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] from your name, but guessing you’ve discussed that one!

[name_f]Amelia[/name_f], definately. I agree with pp that they are pronounced different (or should be anyway haha). As for your other choices, I think [name_u]Emery[/name_u] is gorgeous and is actually on my list as well

I personally like [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] much more, but I think [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] fits better with [name_f]Mary[/name_f]. They’re both pretty names, so I don’t think you could go wrong with either.

I really like [name_f]Emilia[/name_f].

I love [name_f]Emilia[/name_f]. It’s so much prettier in print. As for the other names, I like [name_f]Katherine[/name_f], [name_f]Grace[/name_f], [name_f]Chloe[/name_f], [name_f]Aria[/name_f], and [name_u]Emery[/name_u], but of all of them, I like [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] the best.

I know you’re thinking of keeping it to just one middle name, but I think [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] is beautiful. [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f] seems a bit abrupt.

[name_f]Emilia[/name_f]! [name_f]Emilia[/name_f], a hundred times over. [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], while pretty, has always seemed frumpy and very old-lady-like, while [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] is fresh and international and sweet. I would be over-the-moon excited to meet a little girl named [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f]! I also like [name_f]Arabella[/name_f], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], [name_f]Grace[/name_f], [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] (although I prefer [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] or [name_f]Catharine[/name_f] immensely!), and [name_f]Audrey[/name_f]. If [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] was [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f], then that would also get my vote. I love [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f], but I find [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] just too confusing. I don’t understand the [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] = [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f] thing, and if you do pronounce it with the long “I”, I think it’ll be a hassle, anyway, since it seems the vast majority of people say it with the short “I” sound. I do love [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f], though!

I prefer Emillia and I also really like [name_f]Madeline[/name_f], then [name_f]Katherine[/name_f], then [name_f]Arabella[/name_f]

I like [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] better, it seems so feminine and cute! I also love love [name_f]Arabella[/name_f]!

I pronounce them the same too. I prefer [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], and that is probably how most people will spell it. I do like how [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] looks, but I like the e in the middle of [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]. I have a girl in the preschool I work it named [name_f]Emelia[/name_f]. I know it is a misspelling, but it could be a compromise.
From your list I love:
[name_f]Madeline[/name_f] (But how about [name_f]Adeline[/name_f], I love it so much more and it is used a lot less)
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]
[name_f]Chloe[/name_f]
[name_f]Audrey[/name_f]
Like:
[name_f]Aria[/name_f]
[name_f]Katherine[/name_f]
[name_f]Grace[/name_f]
I’m not really a fan of [name_u]Emery[/name_u], [name_f]Arabella[/name_f], or [name_f]Aubree[/name_f]. [name_u]Emery[/name_u] feels masculine to me, [name_f]Arabella[/name_f] feels to frilly/princessy, and [name_f]Aubree[/name_f] feels really trendy and I prefer it on a boy.

For me, it would chiefly depend on heritage. If you have roots in a country where [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] is the variant most commonly used, I would see good reason to choose it. It is a lovely name and I personally prefer the nuanced pronunciation with the “em” syllable.

However, based off your post, I would choose [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]:
a) it fits better with [name_f]Mary[/name_f]- both English, Victorian names.
b) if you choose [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] you will constantly have to correct spelling, and this is a hassle I would avoid if you like both of the spellings.
c) This is the most trivial reason, but some who are less educated on names than yourself could see [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] as a lazy [name_f]Emily[/name_f]/[name_f]Emma[/name_f] alternative, even though it has a rich history of its own. [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] is more distinct from that incredibly trendy family.

Good luck! You can’t go wrong with these two, they’re both great.

Oh and for your other names, [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] is one of my all-time favorites, so I’m biased!

Thank you to everyone for your input, and I especially like the suggestion of [name_f]Adeline[/name_f]! Going to suggest it over dinner later. And I will be sure to have him read what everyone has said.

We do have some Italian roots and some English roots actually so either [name_f]Emilia[/name_f]/[name_f]Amelia[/name_f] would be fitting in that regard. I also see what someone was saying about people misspelling it or thinking it’s a variant of [name_f]Emily[/name_f] or [name_f]Emma[/name_f]. I will keep all of this in mind when I talk to him later

I think many people pronounce them the same. I know I do.

My middle name is [name_f]Mary[/name_f] after my mother’s sister, and I have loved the bond it creates with me and my family. I love [name_f]Luna[/name_f] and [name_f]Faye[/name_f], but I think that family connection is important!

I like [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] and [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] both for different reasons. I love that you can get [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] really easily with [name_f]Emilia[/name_f], but you can get [name_f]Millie[/name_f] easily with both and I love [name_f]Milly[/name_f] as a nickname. [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] strikes me as more classic and English while [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] seems like a Spanish version (though I know they come from different origins). It’s really “six of one, half a dozen of the other” for me!

[name_u]Emery[/name_u] - This really strikes me as a boy’s name, and seems in direct contrast with [name_f]Arabella[/name_f]!
[name_f]Arabella[/name_f] - Really beautiful and mysterious, I love this one
[name_f]Madeline[/name_f] - a name that seems a little overused
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f] - I adore [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], I really do! [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f] looks and sounds lovely to me
[name_f]Aria[/name_f] - I love this!
[name_f]Chloe[/name_f] - this seems more trendy than a lot of the more classic and regal-sounding names on the list
[name_f]Katherine[/name_f] - I know many, so this name strikes me as unoriginal or overused, but I love a lot of its nicknames
[name_f]Grace[/name_f] - [name_f]Grace[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f] is a pretty Catholic-sounding name, as is [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f]. I don’t know if you’re Catholic, but I know a [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] (my aunt) and a [name_f]Grace[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f], and a [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] mn ln, all pretty Catholic and frequently-used
[name_f]Audrey[/name_f]/[name_f]Aubree[/name_f] - I’m not a fan of the double-e I think [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u] is very cute, but it is unisex and a) doesn’t fit in with a lot of the other names on your list and b) doesn’t sound great with [name_f]Mary[/name_f] (nor does [name_f]Audrey[/name_f])

I love [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]/[name_f]Emilia[/name_f], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], [name_f]Arabella[/name_f], and [name_f]Aria[/name_f]! Good luck, and make sure no one overly influences you two; you will know the right name for you and your daughter, I’m sure of it!
