Emilia or Emmeline?

My husband first suggested [name]Emmeline[/name] for [name]Edmund[/name]'s sister, a name that I quite like, although after mentioning to a couple of my friends they stumbled on the pronunciation and now I am beginning to worry. I pronounce it [name]EM[/name]-ah-[name]LINE[/name], I like that one better anyway. I adore [name]Emily[/name], but I don’t want to use it because of its popularity, so when I saw [name]Emilia[/name] I started considering that too, though the meaning–“rival”–sorta bothers me. I found it easy to pronounce [name]Emilia[/name] correctly, but I saw many forums saying otherwise. Which name do you think would suite [name]Edmund[/name]'s sister better? [name]Do[/name] you prefer [name]Emmeline[/name] or [name]Emilia[/name]?

Thankies,

[name]Emilia[/name]. I like ti because actress [name]Emilia[/name] [name]Clarke[/name].

I love [name]Emmeline[/name]. It is a fav.

I prefer [name]Emmeline[/name] but like you the [name]LINE[/name]/LEEN issue bugs me a little.

I pronounce [name]Emmeline[/name] ‘em-uh-leen’ so I can see your pronunciation issues. I actually don’t know how to pronounce [name]Emilia[/name] so that may have pronunciation issues as well. I personally love [name]Emmeline[/name] with [name]Edmund[/name]! If you want to pronounce it ‘em-ah-[name]LINE[/name]’ then I think that would be fine. Yes, she’ll have to correct a few people, but at least people will know how to spell the name and know that there’s actually two ways to pronounce the name, so it won’t be a big shock to anyone how you pronounce it. It’s the same with [name]Madeline[/name] - either ‘mad-eh-[name]LINE[/name]’ or ‘mad-eh-lyn’. [name]Madeline[/name]'s my sister’s name and some people think her name’s pronounced like [name]Madeleine[/name] (mad-eh-lane). Plus, most people called her [name]Maddie[/name] anyway and I’m sure lots of people will call [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Emmy[/name], [name]Emma[/name] or [name]Em[/name] anyway.

[name]Edmund[/name] is a strong name so I prefer [name]Emmeline[/name] to the somewhat frillier [name]Emilia[/name]. Yes, you may have pronunciation issues with [name]Emmeline[/name] (I’m a “leen” myself :)) but spelling may be an issue for [name]Emilia[/name] because some people will hear [name]Amelia[/name] instead of [name]Emilia[/name].

I personally prefer [name]Emilia[/name], but you will have some people confusing [name]Emilia[/name] and [name]Amelia[/name].

I love both of them but I think [name]Edmund[/name] and [name]Emilia[/name] sound just perfect together!

[name]Emmeline[/name] is best stylistically with [name]Edmund[/name]. But I think with either name, you can’t go wrong!

I love [name]Emilia[/name]. I think [name]Millie[/name] and [name]Eddie[/name] are great sibset nicknames. I agree that some may try to spell it “[name]Amelia[/name],” but as a [name]Sarah[/name] myself, it doesn’t bother me at all to remind people that my name has an H. I would be more bothered if people were constantly pronouncing my name incorrectly. Spelling is an easier problem to have, imo.

[name]Emmeline[/name] (pronounced [name]Emma[/name]-line) gets my vote, in the UK I’ve never heard of the ‘leen’ pronunciation.

I prefer [name]Emilia[/name].

I love them both! I made a post about it recently–maybe the responses there will be helpful to you.

The Berries seemed to prefer [name]Emmeline[/name] to [name]Emilia[/name] two to one, but I’ve come to prefer [name]Emilia[/name], again. It’s a family name for me and I just adore it. I’m still not sure it’s ready to put it on my top 10, but I do really love it and am keeping it in the back of my mind. I can’t decide which I prefer with [name]Edmund[/name], though. I’m not a huge fan of the emma-line pronunciation–I like emma-leen so much more.

Good luck!

[name]Emmeline[/name] is cute!

I love [name]Emmeline[/name]! I am an [name]Emily[/name] and seriously considered changing my name to [name]Emmeline[/name] for a very long time, I pronounce it as you do.
Good luck!
