EMILIE or ELOISE... which do you prefer?

My husband and I have [name_m]French[/name_m]/[name_m]French[/name_m] Canadian heritage and are leaning towards [name_f]EMILIE[/name_f] or [name_f]ELOISE[/name_f] as top picks for our little girl.

If anything, we worry [name_f]Emilie[/name_f] ([name_f]Emily[/name_f]) is too common now… and that [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] is too unusual.

Any thoughts? Which do you prefer?

[name_f]Emilie[/name_f]! Being that I’m an [name_f]Emily[/name_f], I may be biased  [name_f]Emilie[/name_f] is my favorite alternate spelling of [name_f]Emily[/name_f]. It’s beautiful and rhythmic. I’m not a fan of [name_f]Eloise[/name_f].

[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] gets my vote. She might be less common than [name_f]Emily[/name_f] but with the children’s [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] books she’s defiantly not too unusual. If anything [name_f]Emilie[/name_f] looks less familiar than [name_f]Emily[/name_f] or [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] to me. (If you go with [name_f]Emily[/name_f] I would go with the y spelling. IT’s very common and people will just assume this is how it’s supposed to be spelled. Having to say “[name_m]Hi[/name_m] I’m [name_f]Emilie[/name_f] with an -ie” takes away some of [name_f]Emily[/name_f]’s simple beauty.

I prefer [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] by far! It’s so pretty and sweet! [name_f]Emilie[/name_f]/[name_f]Emily[/name_f] is okay, but it’s kind of boring in my opinion, sorry. [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] is a very known name and it’s pretty popular in multiple countries, so I definitely wouldn’t worry about it being too unusual.

I much prefer [name_f]Eloise[/name_f], although [name_f]Emily[/name_f]/[name_f]Emilie[/name_f] is a lovely name (I actually like the spelling [name_f]Emilie[/name_f] better), too, [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] sounds fresh, sweet and happy.

My vote is [name_f]Eloise[/name_f], for the exact reasons specified by lexiem.

Might I throw out another suggestion of [name_f]Amelie[/name_f]? Keeps the [name_m]French[/name_m] heritage but more interesting an [name_f]Emily[/name_f].

I really love [name_f]Eloise[/name_f]! My cousin is called [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] and it’s always struck me as sweet, fresh and charming.
[name_f]Emilie[/name_f] is okay, but I love [name_f]Emilia[/name_f]. WDYT?

[name_m]Even[/name_m] as an [name_f]Emily[/name_f], I say go for [name_f]Eloise[/name_f]! It’s very pretty and strikes the right balance between unsual but still recognisable.

[name_f]Emilie[/name_f] gets my vote! I think it’s a beautiful name! As other posters have suggested, what about [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] or [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] for something that’s a little less common? Not that you need to worry about that in my opinion though, as [name_f]Emilie[/name_f] is perfect on its own!

I love [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] MUCH better, it has a beautiful and poetic sound to it. Sounds more mature than [name_f]Emelie[/name_f], in my opinion.

[name_f]Eloise[/name_f]. Has an unusual yet familiar-enough charm

[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] by a mile. I have actually heard it several times. [name_f]Emily[/name_f] is pretty, but I hear it oh so much.

I prefer [name_f]Emilie[/name_f]. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Elodie[/name_f]? That might be somewhat between the two popularity and sound wise? I vastly prefer [name_f]Elodie[/name_f] to [name_f]Eloise[/name_f], but [name_f]Emilie[/name_f] and [name_f]Elodie[/name_f] are both pretty!

Unless you actually live in [name_m]Quebec[/name_m] or [name_f]France[/name_f], I’d skip [name_f]Emilie[/name_f]. [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] isn’t “too unusual”. In 2012, it was ranked 364 on the SSA chart. If anything, I’d say it’s becoming a very trendy name. It wasn’t even on the list in 2008 and has made a few large jumps since entering in 2009 (913 in 2009, 528 in 2010, 449 in 2011, and 364 in 2012).

My vote would be for [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] but I also like the suggestion of [name_f]Elodie[/name_f].

Another vote here for [name_f]Eloise[/name_f]! [name_f]Emily[/name_f]/[name_f]Emilie[/name_f]/[name_f]Amelie[/name_f] are all “eh” to me (I have met so many Emilys…boring). [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] is elegant and I definitely don’t think it’s that unusual; I think it’s a name almost everyone is familiar with.

[name_m]Both[/name_m] are very, very lovely. But I personally lean towards [name_f]Emilie[/name_f] a bit more.

Éloïse for sure

and [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] is lovely!

[name_f]Eloise[/name_f]! I prefer [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] though I do love [name_f]Emily[/name_f] / [name_f]Emilie[/name_f], which is very common – throughout many generations – though I don’t think that should deter you. [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] very well could spike in popularity. I really don’t think [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] is unusual at all. I know a few of them (all ages) and though I don’t automatically connect it to the children’s books, it means the name has been heard quite a bit.

I love [name_f]Eloise[/name_f]! It’s exotic and different but definitely not too unusual! I find [name_f]Emilie[/name_f] boring now, although I do prefer that spelling over the original [name_f]Emily[/name_f].
