I just love the [name]Em[/name]- sound for a girls name. It feels so girly, sweet, and feminine to me; I just swoon for all [name]Em[/name]- names it seems. I’m torn between [name]Emma[/name], [name]Emily[/name] and [name]Emmeline[/name] (I’m not sure if I prefer the [name]Line[/name] or Leen pronunciation, I really love both). I have specific things that I love and like about each name that makes it impossible to decide.
[name]Emma[/name] - I love the sweetness and simplicity to this name. It feels fun and distinguished at the same time for me. I don’t really mind the popularity either. My reservation is that there is another [name]Emma[/name] in the family. I’ve don’t have any contact with her and my daughter will certainly never meet her. I wouldn’t connect my little [name]Emma[/name] to her in any way but I’m worried other people in the family would… Does this make it off the table?
[name]Emily[/name] - I love the classic appeal with [name]Emily[/name] and I love that I could call her [name]Emma[/name], [name]Emmy[/name], or [name]Millie[/name]. My concern is that [name]Emily[/name] is so overused. I don’t mind popularity but is [name]Emily[/name] to the point that a girl named [name]Emily[/name] would feel that her name is not special? Like we couldn’t think of anything else so we just went with [name]Emily[/name]. I’m probably over-thinking this but I wouldn’t want her to be jealous of her sisters names.
[name]Emmeline[/name] - This seems to give me the best of both [name]Emma[/name] and [name]Emily[/name]. It also feels fun and distinguished yet is definitely not overused. I’m not sure though that it fits with the other names in my list. I don’t know that I can see a sibset of [name]Dean[/name], [name]Clara[/name] & [name]Emmeline[/name], while [name]Dean[/name], [name]Clara[/name] & [name]Emma[/name], and [name]Dean[/name], [name]Clara[/name] & [name]Emily[/name] seem great together.
(I don’t have any children yet but [name]Dean[/name] and [name]Clara[/name] are firmly set as the top choices so that is why I used them in the sibset example ) So which do you like best of the three? Which would you choose for me?
1 [name]Dean[/name], [name]Clara[/name] and [name]Emmeline[/name] - if you have a boy named [name]Dean[/name], I think you’ll have to go with the “line” ending so they won’t rhyme. I love [name]Emmeline[/name].
2 [name]Dean[/name], [name]Clara[/name] and [name]Emily[/name] - these three look and sound like “natural” siblings.
3 [name]Dean[/name], [name]Clara[/name] and [name]Emma[/name] - I love the sweet and simple [name]Emma[/name] but it almost sounds too “alike” and therefore less “memorable” with a sister named [name]Clara[/name].
[name]Emma[/name] is my favorite of the three, but both [name]Emma[/name] and [name]Emily[/name] have been completely overdone at this point. I like [name]Emma[/name] because it’s short, simple, sweet, and timeless. [name]Dean[/name], [name]Clara[/name], and [name]Emily[/name] do feel like the most natural sibling group though.
I have loved [name]Emily[/name] / [name]Emilia[/name] since I was a little girl. My cousin used [name]Emilia[/name] for her daughter so it’s off the table for me. [name]Emily[/name] is very popular. Believe it or not I don’t know a single [name]Emily[/name] under 5. I think it’s your secret favorite. Give her a unique middle name or nickname to give the name a special feel. Popularity does not deter me from using a name.
[name]Emmeline[/name] - easily my favourite.
[name]Emma[/name] - It’s okay, but I prefer [name]Gemma[/name].
[name]Emily[/name] - It’s alright
I agree about [name]Dean[/name], [name]Clara[/name] and [name]Emily[/name] being the most natural sibset.
However, maybe you’d consider the fresher [name]Emilie[/name] as an alternative.
Despite it’s popularity I think that [name]Emily[/name] is the most beautiful of the three. I hadn’t thought of using [name]Millie[/name] as a nn, that’s a great option!
[name]Emmeline[/name]
[name]Emma[/name]
[name]Emily[/name]
But really [name]Emmeline[/name] is so unique and gorgeous while [name]Emma[/name] and [name]Emily[/name] are SOOOO overused.
I like [name]Emmeline[/name] best–I actually vastly prefer [name]Dean[/name], [name]Clara[/name], and [name]Emmeline[/name] to any of the other options. While [name]Dean[/name] and [name]Clara[/name] are both fairly common, an “overdone” name like [name]Emma[/name] or [name]Emily[/name] makes [name]Dean[/name] and [name]Clara[/name] almost trite, if that makes sense. It takes away from the individuality and charm of [name]Dean[/name] and [name]Clara[/name]. They become almost boring. However, [name]Dean[/name], [name]Clara[/name], and [name]Emmeline[/name]–I would love to meet siblings with those names! And you could still call her [name]Emma[/name] or [name]Millie[/name] if you like.
I think any of them could work. I wonder if it would help to think in terms of 4 kids. So [name]Dean[/name], [name]Emmeline[/name], [name]Clara[/name], and [name]Joseph[/name] sound great to me. Or maybe [name]Dean[/name], [name]Clara[/name], [name]Emily[/name], and [name]Paul[/name]. Or [name]Dean[/name], [name]Clara[/name], [name]Lucy[/name], and [name]Emma[/name]. See what I mean? For me, that helps me to get a better picture of the overall vibe and then decide which I like best.
I’ve always liked [name]Emmeline[/name]. I think it goes fine with [name]Dean[/name] and [name]Clara[/name]. I’ve always pronounced it [name]Em[/name]-uh-line anyways. Another [name]Em[/name] name I didn’t see on this thread was [name]Emme[/name]. I think it’s super cute!
[name]Emily[/name] is my favourite. Then [name]Emmeline[/name].
[name]Don[/name]'t understand why the big weakness of [name]Emily[/name] is popularity when [name]Emma[/name] has been more popular for awhile now? Since 2007 [name]Emma[/name] has beat out [name]Emily[/name] every year for popularity. Over 4500 more Emmas than Emilys were born in 2011 in the US.
Anyway, both have been in the Top Ten for a good long while now so I’d say neither is drastically more overused than the other. I just like [name]Emily[/name] more. It has more of its own flavour, the third syllable gives it a little bit of weight but the -ee ending keeps it from getting ponderous.
I’m not sure why I have such different reactions to [name]Emma[/name] and [name]Emily[/name].
[name]Emmeline[/name] is a pretty, uncommon pick.
I secretly like [name]Emerald[/name] as well, but it’s a very different feel from [name]Emma[/name]/[name]Emily[/name]/[name]Emmeline[/name].
It kinda bothers me to hear [name]Emily[/name] just called an overused name. I’m an [name]Emily[/name] and I absolutely love it. I never had another [name]Emily[/name] in my class and there were only a couple in my entire school. It’s a classic, feminine, and pretty name. If you go with [name]Emily[/name] you can get [name]Emma[/name] from that or [name]Emmy[/name] or any other nickname you’d get with the other too. Butttt, I really do adore the name [name]Emmeline[/name] and wish I could name my own kid that haha. I’d go with either [name]Emily[/name] or [name]Emmeline[/name] but not [name]Emma[/name] because to me it’s just a nickname.
Another name in the [name]Em[/name] group that I really wish I could use is [name]Ember[/name]! I think it’s unique and a prettier take on the older [name]Amber[/name]…
ps: the plus side to being a well known, popular name is that they always have your name on the keychains, bike license plates, or whatever you can think of. Which, as kids we all love
[name]Emilia[/name] is a nice alternative as well. It was on my list once before but fell off over time. [name]Dean[/name], [name]Clara[/name], and [name]Emilia[/name] seem like a sweet sibset as well I’ll have to consider it further.
I didn’t mean to seem negative about [name]Emily[/name]. I truly love the name and I find it so special and endearing, I’m just afraid that she wouldn’t find her name special. @mmmemily15 - Its great to hear from an [name]Emily[/name] that loves her name
