Emmeline spelled Emmelene. Taboo?

I’ve loved this name since I first saw it. I myself prn it [name]Emma[/name]-Leen. I know there are many who prn it [name]Emme[/name]-[name]Line[/name] and even some who prn it as [name]Emma[/name]-[name]Lyn[/name]. That’s why spelling could be an issue as well as misprounciation.

Would spelling [name]Emmeline[/name] as Emmelene being going to far or too “yoo-neek”? I prefer the original [name]Emmeline[/name] spelling, I think Emmelene looks kind of strange but I almost want to do it to assure proper prn

What do my fellow berries think?

Thanks in advance

I think the change would be alright since I pronounce it as -line myself and having it spelled -lene would make me say -leen instead. However, at the same time, I can see people mistaking it for [name]Emmeline[/name] or [name]Emmalynn[/name] at a glance, and so all in all, I don’t think the pronunciation problem is avoidable…

I would just go with [name]Emmeline[/name] and just correct people if you have to.

I wouldn’t necessarily say its taboo but personally I’d spell it [name]Emmeline[/name]. But I go back and forth between liking [name]Emme[/name]-line and [name]Emma[/name]-leen.
If pronunciation is most important to you go with Emmelene.

I grew up with an [name]Emmeline[/name] prn [name]Emma[/name] leen who never had any major problems, I would spell it the “line” way and not worry about having to correct people sometimes, it happens with tons of names.

Edit: I know an Emme LINE as well spelled the same way, I think this name is either/or

Part of the charm of [name]Emmeline[/name] is the spelling so personally I wouldn’t mess with perfection :). I pronounce it as “leen” which is the British and French pronunciation. You should really only have to tell people your preferred pronunciation once and they’ll get the hang of it. I think [name]Emmeline[/name] is such a gorgeous name that it would be worth a little trouble. If you spelled it Emmelene, you may solve the pronunciation problem but then your daughter would probably have to spell it.

I also pronounce [name]Emmeline[/name] like [name]Emme[/name]-leen. When I first read Emmelene, I actually pronounced it in my head like Emmelène ([name]Emma[/name]-len).

Pronunciation issues could come up no matter what spelling, so you should just go with the one you like the best (I prefer [name]Emmeline[/name], personally).

I really dislike the spelling Emmelene, it takes away the pretty/sophisticated look/vibe that [name]Emmeline[/name] has.

I have a friend with an [name]Emmeline[/name] who pronounces it [name]Emma[/name]-lyn. She has to correct pronunciation sometimes. Really I don’t think spelling it [name]Emmeline[/name] but pronouncing it [name]Emma[/name]-leen would be off anyway. You’d likely have to correct pronunciation regardless, so I say stick with the traditional spelling which is a lot more beautiful, [name]IMO[/name] than Emmelene (which honestly I wasn’t sure how to pronounce when I saw it at first…)

I agree with this. I’m in the process of likely going by my nn (prn. “lee-lah”) instead of my full name ([name]Ashley[/name]), and no matter how I spell it ([name]Lela[/name], [name]Leila[/name], [name]Lila[/name], [name]Leala[/name], [name]Lelah[/name], [name]Leela[/name], etc.), I expect to have people either spell or pronounce it wrong. Everyone expects it to be spelled differently, so I feel like I just have to go with the spelling that works best for me, and I’ll have to correct people along the way. But when [name]Emmeline[/name] is the established spelling, I would go for that. I’ve heard that “lee-lah” is a legitimate pronunciation for [name]Lila[/name], [name]Leila[/name], [name]Leela[/name], [name]Lela[/name], etc. which is why I’m having so much trouble, haha.

I think [name]Emmeline[/name] is gorgeous, though, and so much more streamlined than Emmelene. For some reason, Emmelene looks more Greek, like a combination of [name]Emma[/name] and [name]Eleni[/name]/[name]Elene[/name]/[name]Helene[/name], so I would be more inclined to say em-el-EE-nee or something like that, personally. But [name]Emmeline[/name] is gorgeous!

Good luck!

Thank you for all the feedback! I agree with using [name]Emmeline[/name] as spelled. [name]Just[/name] wanted to hear what everyone else thought  thanks again!

[name]Just[/name] a thought but, you could spell it like Emmeleine kinda like [name]Madeleine[/name]. I think it would make more people say [name]Emma[/name]-Leen and not [name]Emma[/name]-[name]Line[/name].
