Hello, Berries! My husband and I are TTC our third child and naturally we are talking names! We already have Connor and Emmett. For a girl I’m loving Rose and Rosalie but the Twilight association has been bugging me. Would other people understand and think of the Twilight connection? Would it be like naming siblings Romeo and Juliet?
For now, it is quite an obvious link to anyone who’s read the books or seen the films. But I’m not sure how long the Twilight legacy will last, to be honest. Chances are in 10-20 years it won’t be an issue at all.
Personally, I’d go with [name_f]Rose[/name_f] over [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] to avoid the problem entirely. Or maybe [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], [name_f]Rosaline[/name_f] or [name_f]Rosanna[/name_f]? [name_f]Coralie[/name_f], [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] or [name_f]Annelie[/name_f]? However, if it’s [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] that you really love then I’d use it and just be prepared to laugh off the odd comment about it.
I immediately thought Twilight. However it’s really a generation thing isn’t it?
The Twilight series isn’t a classic is it? The books are poorly written, and I thought the films were awful, so when your children are older, I don’t expect it’ll be a “thing” to worry about. But I may be wrong!
That said, right now, if you went with [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] there would be people who make the connection. If that bothers you, I’d go with [name_f]Rose[/name_f] or another [name_f]Rose[/name_f]/[name_f]Rosa[/name_f] name, like [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] or [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f].
In the long-term though, as I said, I don’t think it’ll be an issue.
I want to say it’s not important, but I can’t deny that my mind did jump to Twilight…
If it’s the only name you love, I’d use it and be prepared to deal with some comments on it. But if you like any other names I would just use those instead. Maybe other names like [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f], [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] would do the trick?
it didn’t even occur to me as i have not read the books/seen the movies. i definitely prefer [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] over [name_f]Rose[/name_f], but as other’s suggested [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] or [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] are great alternatives.
I immediately think of Twilight too, sorry! I don’t know how long the Twilight effect will last, but if it’s [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] that you really really love, I say just use it. Otherwise it’s worth considering [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], etc for alternative.
I instantly thought of Twilight. It’s hard to say how long the association will last. I like the suggestion of [name_f]Rosamond[/name_f]/[name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] and [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f].
I immediately thought Twilight when I saw the caption of [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] and [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] before ever clicking on your question. I would avoid it, especially considering they were a couple in the book. I think if it was like [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] and [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] or [name_f]Alice[/name_f] the connection isn’t as immediate since they weren’t almost always mentioned together. I like the suggestion of just [name_f]Rose[/name_f] because though [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] was often called [name_f]Rose[/name_f], my mind doesn’t immediately jump to Twilight upon hearing [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] and [name_f]Rose[/name_f].
Some people may bring up Twilight so I suppose you have to weigh up how much that would bother you. But I don’t think it’s a huge issue. Twilight isn’t nearly as popular as it once was, and will probably have lost all relevance by the time a [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] born this year is a teenager.
I’m a teenager and I’ve never read the books or watched the movies. Children in the future will most certainly never have read the books or watched the movies. Twilight is pretty much dead.
I immediately thought of Twilight when I saw the names together, but I don’t think that would be an issue for your kids. You might get parents here and there commenting on it, but I doubt their classmates will even know what Twilight is. It was very popular but it basically disappeared once the last movie came out so it’s not like it’s an enduring classic. I think having an [name_m]Edward[/name_m] and a [name_f]Bella[/name_f] would be much more obvious, but for two minor characters in a trendy series people have already forgotten about it’s not a big deal.
I’ve seen all of the movies, and it didn’t even cross my mind! I don’t think Twilight is going to stick around enough to where it would be a problem, it’s not like [name_f]Bella[/name_f] and [name_m]Edward[/name_m], either which would be a very strong Twilight feel even for people who weren’t really exposed to it. I think they’re cute together!
I immediately thought of Twilight, as well. As ashamed as so many people are about that travesty of a series, it still is something that quite a few of us still associate things with. I think it would be a bit much to have an [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] and [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] as siblings. I’d say the same thing about [name_m]Jack[/name_m] and [name_f]Rose[/name_f] and other couple names…they played lovers. It’s a bit odd. The names sound great together, but not when you take that other stuff into account.
I recently stumbled upon a bunch of posts from 2012 while researching names for a post on my blog, and so many names were deemed “too twilight.” [name_m]Even[/name_m] berries considering [name_m]Edward[/name_m] (without siblings) and [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] (which doesn’t even appear in the series) were concerned. Now, you’d be crazy to think that anyone’s first association with [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] would be Twilight. I thought it then and I think it’s been proven now- Twilight doesn’t have staying power. It won’t stick around the way that the Chronicles of [name_f]Narnia[/name_f] or [name_m]Lord[/name_m] of the Rings or [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] have. I think [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] and [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] are fine, especially since you have a third child.
Thank you for all of the replies! Wow they were so varied! Pretty much everyone in my real life have told me they don’t see a problem (even my [name_f]Diana[/name_f] hard Twilight friends).
My issue isn’t so much that they are both Twilight names as much as the fact that they are a couple in the series.
Twilight is a fairly recent phenomenon that is still fresh in a lot of people’s minds. In all fairness though, [name_f]Stephenie[/name_f] [name_m]Meyer[/name_m] did pick out some pretty awesome names for her characters.
Unless the parent was wearing a Team [name_m]Edward[/name_m] t-shirt and actively gushing about how [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] and [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] are relationship goals, then I don’t think anyone will jump on the reference that your kids share names with the characters that are a couple immediately. Especially since you have another child with a name completely unrelated to Twilight; the names just seem like coincidence.
