our chosen girls names for the twins were originally [name]Agnes[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] and [name]Martha[/name] [name]Gwendoline[/name]… but someone suggested [name]Enid[/name] instead of [name]Martha[/name] beacuse it had more spunk and it got me thinking.
Another possibility is [name]Edith[/name] but i have a Great Auntie [name]Edith[/name] and i dont know if that is too close. She goes by [name]Edie[/name] and since we are very big on nicknames, if we were to use [name]Enid[/name] or [name]Edith[/name], she would go by [name]Edie[/name].
Another thing is that our daughter is called [name]Sybil[/name] and when we were named her, everyone thought it was because i was so in love with the Downton [name]Abbey[/name] character [name]Sybil[/name] (she was born during the series), but we had already chosen her name prior to the series starting. [name]Edith[/name] is another Downton Name and is [name]Sybil[/name]'s sister in the series so i dont know if that would be too much?
So the big question is…

the middle names are staying as they are the babies Great Grandmothers names and the spellings are staying the same too

To be honest I love the [name]Martha[/name] combination more than the other two, its beautiful and underused and does have spunk. Plus I think she pairs great with [name]Agnes[/name].
But both [name]Enid[/name] and [name]Edith[/name] are lovely in their own right, as for the Downton [name]Abbey[/name] association I don’t think it really matters despite it being such a popular show right now (and an awesome one too). [name]Both[/name] [name]Sybil[/name] and [name]Edith[/name] come with a long history with several associations that in time the memory of the tv show will fade and people will think of them as classic names. Because thats what they are: classic. As for the reference to your Great Aunt, it really depends if you are close to her and wouldn’t mind the reference.
Overall my vote goes to [name]Martha[/name]. Good luck naming!

I don’t think it’s so obvious because [name]Agnes[/name] is in there, too–although, I don’t watch the show and don’t really know all the characters’ names. I think [name]Agnes[/name] and [name]Edith[/name] just complement each other the best, and [name]Edith[/name] [name]Gwendoline[/name] is just divine!
I do believe the someone who suggested [name]Enid[/name] was I! My goodness - tough choice. I think [name]Edith[/name] and [name]Enid[/name] are both a million times better than [name]Martha[/name]. I love them both passionately. [name]Both[/name] sound lovely with [name]Gwendoline[/name], and with [name]Agnes[/name] and [name]Sybil[/name]. Since [name]Edith[/name] is a family name, I wouldn’t worry about the Downton [name]Abbey[/name] association. [name]Enid[/name] is edgier, [name]Edith[/name] is softer. It’s kind of like [name]Beatrix[/name] vs [name]Beatrice[/name]. Which one calls to you?
Oh, beautiful names! I love [name]Agnes[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name]! So regal and stately, but absolutely sweet on a wee one!
I’m not a [name]Martha[/name] fan–the sounds are just unpleasant to me, and [name]Enid[/name] and [name]Edith[/name] happen to be two favourites. I think [name]Enid[/name] is more whimsical, more adventurous/daring, and slightly less trendy, and therefore would be my pick. Objectively, I think [name]Edith[/name] sounds better to my ears. It’s just got so much weight to it for such a short name. I love it!
I don’t think the [name]Sybil[/name]/[name]Edith[/name] thing is too much to worry about, but I think [name]Agnes[/name], [name]Sybil[/name], and [name]Enid[/name] feels more unexpected as a sibset, and in a good way? [name]Edith[/name] and [name]Agnes[/name] are so similar as far as style (short, hard, unfrilly, old-fashioned), and [name]Enid[/name]…whilst it could also fit into those categories, seems slightly of a different era or space.
I like [name]Martha[/name] and I like [name]Edith[/name], but [name]Enid[/name] is not my cup of tea. Personally, I would choose [name]Martha[/name]. What about [name]Meredith[/name], nn [name]Edith[/name]?
[name]Enid[/name] along with [name]Agnes[/name] sounds almost too matchy. Half of [name]Enid[/name]'s letters are shared with [name]Agnes[/name]. Between [name]Agnes[/name] and [name]Enid[/name], [name]Agnes[/name] seems stronger and more present if that makes any sense. I think [name]Enid[/name] is a wonderful name, but [name]Edith[/name] has more presence along with [name]Agnes[/name].
[name]Agnes[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] & [name]Edith[/name] [name]Gwendoline[/name] sound beautiful. I love how one name sets middle name shares letters with anothers first name.
[name]Edith[/name] and [name]Elizabeth[/name] both start with E’s and end in Th. [name]Agnes[/name] and [name]Gwendoline[/name] both share e and n.
I also don’t care for the fact that you can write [name]Enid[/name] with the letters of [name]Gwendoline[/name]. There seems to be a lot of repetition in that combination.
[name]Sybil[/name], [name]Agnes[/name] & [name]Edith[/name] all share five letters too. A nice little bond in the names. I prefer both [name]Enid[/name] and [name]Edith[/name] to [name]Martha[/name]. I think it’s cute that the twins will share vowel first names. I typically find vowel first names lighter and like a breath of fresh air.
