[name_f]Epona[/name_f] to honour [name_m]Philip[/name_m] - is it plausible?
[name_m]Philip[/name_m] means “friend of horses” and [name_f]Epona[/name_f] is the Celtic goddess of horses, with the name sometimes being understood as “protector of horses”.
I’ve been trying to find an honour name for [name_m]Philip[/name_m] (hubby’s dad) that I like for aaaaaages, and I think I might have found a winner.
It would be a middle name, and I’m not sure of any combinations yet. [name_m]Just[/name_m] throwing it out there.
I love it! I think it has just the right amount of connection to [name_m]Philip[/name_m].
Maybe you would also consider…
Horse Related:
[name_f]Eponine[/name_f]
[name_u]Destry[/name_u]
[name_f]Meadow[/name_f]
It’s a really lovely honour name. Only thing that would make me a tiny bit hesitant is the potential nickname Pony. If you like it though then it’s definitely a solid choice
Would this honor be used as a first or a middle? I ask because [name_f]Epona[/name_f] is also the name of [name_m]Link[/name_m]’s horse in the [name_u]Legend[/name_u] of [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] series and many people associate the name with this connection. Which doesn’t necessarily make it unuseable as a first by any means, but is worth taking into consideration.
You’re totally right! I kept saying this name over and over trying to remember where I’d seen it before and I couldn’t. Eventually decided maybe I was just confusing it with something else like Eragon
I know zero about that game, so thanks for the heads up. I doubt anyone in our social group would have this association either, but it’s always good to know in advance.
Ohhhh… I’ve always loved [name_f]Eponine[/name_f], but never knew what it meant. Thank you for the clarification. That’s a great alternative. Such a stunning name!!
Oh my goodness, I can’t believe I missed that in the original post. As a middle I don’t think the video game association would be any trouble! And as someone mentioned there’s always [name_f]Eponine[/name_f] as well, which is a [name_u]French[/name_u] variation of [name_f]Epona[/name_f] (and a personal favorite of mine.) Of course that also has it’s pop culture reference with [name_u]Les[/name_u] Mis, but again in the middle I don’t think it would be an issue.
Oh and before I forget [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] is another horse related name! At face value it looks [name_f]Rose[/name_f] related, (that association made easier by Latin based language varients like [name_f]Rosemonde[/name_f] or the Latin phrase rosa munda) but the name is Germanic and means “Horse protection.” [name_f]Rosamunde[/name_f] is also an appropriate way to spell it.
I love [name_f]Epona[/name_f] it’s been a long time guilty pleasure. my first association is from [name_u]Legend[/name_u] of [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] as it was the game my siblings played most often and i just cared about the horse. But i find it perfectly usable especially as a middle
I think [name_f]Eponine[/name_f] would be so pretty. I don’t know if I’m pronouncing [name_f]Epona[/name_f] right but the “een” names make good middles!
I think [name_f]Epona[/name_f] is nice!
what about…
[name_f]Pippa[/name_f]
[name_f]Philippa[/name_f]
[name_m]Pheonix[/name_m]
[name_f]Rosaline[/name_f]/Rosalyn or [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] (they both mean gentle horse)
[name_f]Eponine[/name_f] (Same as [name_f]Epona[/name_f])
[name_u]Rhian[/name_u] Or [name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f] (Horse goddess in welsh mythology)
I like it, and think it’s an interesting honour for [name_m]Philip[/name_m] – very creative!
I do prefer [name_f]Eponine[/name_f]. It just feels a bit more familiar and of course has the literary connection (the story is rather tragic, but I think the connection is still a positive one, to me at least).
100% agree!
Also love [name_f]Philippa[/name_f], [name_f]Pippa[/name_f], [name_u]Pippin[/name_u] and all those names, but I’m guessing you’ve already discounted those. And seconding the suggestions of [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] and [name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f]
