[name]Just[/name] curious, because I’ve recently read [name]Les[/name] Mis, and love the musical and super pumped for the movie coming out SUPER soon, would you name your daughter Eponine? What are your thoughts on the name? I am NOT having a baby, nor planning to. Just wondering.
Eponine has a lovely name and is my favorite [name]Les[/name] Mis character but I see [name]Cosette[/name] as more usable, especially since she doesn’t die. Only 2 weeks till the premiere!
I really love the book. Eponine is a gorgous name, my favourite character. It’s definitely useable I think. [name]Fantine[/name] is pretty too.
I wouldn’t use it, it sounds like a type of vaccine or medication imo
I really like the idea of it, the way I say it in my head sounds pretty, (have no experience with the story myself so no comments there) I would say to be prepared for it to become slightly more popular (not massively in any way, since it’s so unique) after the movie release.
I am a HUGE [name]Les[/name] Mis fan, and while Eponine is an absolutely gorgeous name, I could never see myself using it in real life mostly because it is so strongly attached with the character and I’m a ball of tears every time during “[name]Little[/name] Fall of [name]Rain[/name]” – I’d be a mess just trying to call my daughter by her name! It is very pretty though and could be transferred to modern day by some brave parents

Absolutely not! [name]Les[/name] Miserables is one of my favorite books and there’s still no way I’d use it. [name]Even[/name] in the books, [name]Victor[/name] [name]Hugo[/name] says Eponine (and her sister Azelma) are unfortunate to have those names, as their mother had been reading too many cheap romance novels when she decided on them. It seems a bit ironic to pick a name thought horrible by the man who invented it.
I do think Eponine is pretty (and Azelma is gorgeous) but I can’t get over that part of the book, and it is far too tied to the character. In general, I think it’s unwise to have a name that’s “owned” by one person (Eponine, [name]Rihanna[/name], [name]Madonna[/name], [name]Gulliver[/name], Usnavi) and unfortunately I think that’s the case with Eponine. I might consider [name]Hugo[/name] if I wanted to pay homage to the book.
No, I would never use it. I wouldn’t want to burden my child with a name that’s basically only associated with a fandom.
GO for it! Super beautiful, and useable as a child and as an adult. Wonderful choice.
I would use it. I think Epona is a bit more usable if you want to avoid strong character ties, but Eponine is more frilly (a good thing for me) and more fun to say. I don’t bother myself too much with character associations. It’s a good name and I wouldn’t want to see it fade into oblivion. Especially since [name]Po[/name] or [name]Nina[/name] could be a nickname.
It’s one of my guilty pleasure names. I think a lot of people would misspell and mispronounce the name.
That was my initial reaction too (that, and I remember a description of Eponine missing most of her teeth?).

I love it and I would use it. Probably as more of a middle name, but still. It’s lovely.

It’s better than [name]Cosette[/name] but that doesn’t mean I’d use it or consider it usable.
“Eponee” is also the name of a character on a sketch comedy out here in Australia, specifically because her mother is a ridiculous and trashy woman who tries to be impressive/literate/upscale and fails laughably. So that throws it into rather “[name]Hyacinth[/name] Bucket” territory for me.
Also, there’s the context of the novel. Basically, if Madam Thenardier thought it was a good name, that doesn’t in any way mean you should. [name]Victor[/name] [name]Hugo[/name] did not pick them out as classic and artistic French choices. It is basically a story about tragedy/ill-education of the ghetto and some rather terrible people’s choice of gratingly kreative trashy names.
@stripedsocks I’m not a fan of [name]Les[/name] Mis names either, I think people romanticize them because of the musical and now that the movies coming out I think [name]Cosette[/name] will probably skyrocket, I can see [name]Fantine[/name] and Eponine will gain popularity on naming boards as well.
If you loved the book and musical then the movie will most likely annoy you from the get go. In the book, [name]Hugo[/name] describes [name]Fantine[/name] as having blonde hair. For twenty five years the musical has depicted the character of [name]Fantine[/name] having blonde hair.
And yet the movie people, knowing how much people love the musical and book, have decided to give her brown her and [name]Cosette[/name] blonde (hers is brown). I can’t watch it for that reason. If they’ve already gone against [name]Victor[/name] [name]Hugo[/name]'s descriptions of HIS characters then what on earth will they have done to the actual plot?? 
Regarding Eponine as a name I wouldn’t use it. It’s far too linked to the character.
…so essentially, Eponine is the French Revolution equivalent to [name]Neveah[/name]? 
I would say Cosette is closer to it lol, Eponine is actually real and comes from the Gaulish word “epos” which means horse iirc it’s a variation of Epona who was a goddess of horses. Cosette was pretty much made up by Hugo plus its synonymous with child abuse and used to describe some other negative things in France which makes it unattractive to me.
I think the movie will change a bunch of this though which will please or irritate a bunch of people depending on how you feel about the book.
