My husband’s absolute favorite name for our baby girl is [name]Erin[/name]. He has maintained this as his favorite name for years. I personally know many, many Erins–all of whom are around my age. I have always felt that it is an out-of-vogue sort of name for my daughter, and may seem odd when compared to our little girl’s peers’ names. For example, I knew a [name]Barbara[/name] once in college who was my age, but her name seemed to not quite “fit” a person of our age.
Please don’t get me wrong, I think [name]Erin[/name] is an good name. I just think that she may feel a little out of place with her peers. What do you think?
I don’t really know know what names are ‘in’ in USA (I’m assuming that’s where you live?) but I have yet to meet a little (younger than me) [name]Erin[/name] here in ChCh NZ.
I think it’s a cool name though and if you both like it then there is definitely nothing wrong with being different.
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with [name]Erin[/name], but you may also like Irish names like [name]Maeve[/name], [name]Fiona[/name], [name]Bridget[/name], [name]Aveline[/name], [name]Delaney[/name], [name]Rosaleen[/name], [name]Rowan[/name], etc. I don’t view [name]Erin[/name] like I do [name]Barbara[/name], but more like [name]Heather[/name] or [name]Megan[/name], which are also mentioned in the above blog.
Irisrose: I completely agree with you! I feel it lacks personality, like a wallflower sort of name.
[name]Jill[/name]: The Erins I know are lovely people as well, but you are right - it feels like a name from the 70’s/80’s. That was the point I was trying to express - that a baby [name]Erin[/name] today would feel like the [name]Barbara[/name] I went to school with: a name out of its time.
Thank you for your opinions! I’m hoping to find a name that may knock this one out of his top slot!
I totally understand the [name]Barbara[/name] comparison, and while I do think that [name]Erin[/name] feels dated, to me it feels dated in a [name]Megan[/name]/[name]Heather[/name]/[name]Jessica[/name] type of way, not in a [name]Barbara[/name]/[name]Sharon[/name]/[name]Donna[/name]/[name]Marilyn[/name] way. [name]Erin[/name] is still in use and pretty popular (#164), so while it feels “out” to me, it doesn’t feel as far out as [name]Barbara[/name].
I hope I made sense.
Are you still liking [name]Clementine[/name]? I thought your idea of [name]Clementine[/name] Kick was wonderful.
What other names does your husband like aside from [name]Erin[/name]? (I apologize if you’ve already answered this before.)
I currently am in school with girls named [name]Paula[/name], [name]Betty[/name], and [name]Sylvia[/name], all names I don’t think fit well with my name group - but they still work! That being said, [name]Erin[/name] does seem to be a bit boring…
You could do [name]Eden[/name], [name]Arden[/name], or [name]Eris[/name] as a different but similar name.
Your husband didn’t take to [name]Sarina[/name] [name]Clementine[/name] “Kick”, I take it. That’s alright! I hope you find a great name for your baby!
I have a thread going under the Girls’ Names section talking about the names we currently like.
[name]Lemon[/name] - Unfortunately, [name]Sarina[/name] was nixed, but we are still talking about the other names (and lots of other names!). I just started this thread to talk about [name]Erin[/name] specifically since DH is so hooked on it!
[name]Erin[/name]'s been making the top 10 in [name]Scotland[/name] for a few years - but up until recently it has never been particularly in fashion over here. I knew loads of [name]Erin[/name]'s my age when I lived in [name]Canada[/name] but have yet to meet one over about 12 in the UK. Most I know of are still under 5.
I would probably agree with the others in saying it would sound dated in N.[name]America[/name] by now.
I like [name]Erin[/name]! Always did, but she is a bit boring, more of a middle name so to say. She’d make a nice and actually surprising alternative to [name]Grace[/name] and [name]Rose[/name]…
[name]Erin[/name] always makes me personally think of her Norse ‘relatives’ so to speak…
[name]Eir[/name] was the Norse goddess of healing, and a lot of names are related to that:
[name]Eirin[/name] (only one letter off!)
Eiril
[name]Eira[/name] (also an Irish name meaning ‘snow’)
Eiri
Eirun
Eivor
Also, there’s Eina and Einara, and I thought of [name]Erica[/name] which is fairly similar, no? And [name]Irene[/name] with variants ([name]Irina[/name] is lovely), but she may feel dated to you as well…
And I always though [name]Era[/name] is a nice name, but it may be a bit ‘out there’
Best of luck!
Thank you very much for the suggestions! I appreciate your help! Unfortunately, the appeal of [name]Erin[/name] to my husband is that it is a non-risk. It is a common name that he has heard many times throughout his life. His other favorites are [name]Shannon[/name], [name]Jennifer[/name] and [name]Emily[/name].
Thanks to everyone for the opinions! I’m really hoping to steer the decision toward a name that doesn’t automatically sound like a 30-year old!
[name]Erin[/name] is on the downhill of its popularity (in the U.S.), but [name]IMO[/name] it’s not too dated to rule out using it on a girl these days. Good luck!
My name is [name]Erin[/name] I’m 23 and I’m the only [name]Erin[/name] I know … I’ve found that one thing with my name is, when I meet older ladies, they always say “[name]Erin[/name] is SUCH a lovely name!” but no one young ever comments! He he so that might answer your question
I also got told off in the supermarket once:
Customer: “Oh! [name]Erin[/name]! Are you from [name]Ireland[/name]?”
Me: “No :)”
Customer: offended WHAT! [name]Erin[/name] and you’re NOT from [name]Ireland[/name]!? That’s like calling your child [name]LUIGI[/name] when he’s not Italian!!"
My close cousin her name is [name]Erin[/name]-[name]Marie[/name] , but just goes by [name]Erin[/name]…she’s unique and not boring by any means. It’s unique to me because I know very few [name]Erin[/name]'s I’m 20 and she’s 25 so…
My three year old was in a class group with an [name]Eir[/name]-ann last year, and my 6 year old is in a class with an [name]Erin[/name] this year. My next door neighbour is an [name]Erin[/name]. I have a daughter Eires and a number of our congratulation cards were made out to congratulate us on the birth of ‘[name]Erin[/name]’. I actually quite like it, but its too close to Eires or me to use it again, or [name]Ellis[/name], which I also like.
I have to agree that it’s fallen out of fashion but I always found it to be a pleasant name. I met so many Erins but it’s one of those names where everyone with it you can pretty much count on being friendly and bright. There must be something good about parents who chose the name [name]Erin[/name] in the 80’s, haha! Good luck with choosing.
