Esmé(e)

I have really been thinking about Esmée a lot lately. I’ve always found it an attractive option to honor my grandmother (whose MN was [name]Mae[/name]), and lately I’ve found its mix of unpredictability and rich femininity and class so appealing (besides, the meaning is great). I know it’s not a huge fan of everyone’s, and I know most would prefer the simpler [name]Esme[/name] spelling, I have several reasons for preferring the Esmée spelling.

I’m just curious what people think of it, and, if you like/love it, would you actually use it? I’m afraid it might be just too unusual next to some of my more popular/classic favorites like [name]Isabelle[/name], [name]Charlotte[/name], and [name]Rachel[/name]. [name]Do[/name] you think it goes okay with the names in my signature, or would it work better as a MN? Combo ideas–with Esmée as either a FN or a MN? So far I’ve been tossing around [name]Genevieve[/name] Esmee “[name]Evie[/name]”, although I’m very open to other ideas.

Thanks, ladies!

I adore [name]Esme[/name]! It was on our list actually but never made it to the top…

I think it’s perfectly usable! And love the nn [name]Mae[/name]! [name]Genevieve[/name] Esmee is adorable. [name]Esme[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name] is also cute. I like the EE spelling, but fear it’d be more likely to be mis-prn as Ez-Mee, but maybe not.

I think [name]Genevieve[/name] Esmee is great! It also doesn’t seem strange to me - although I only know one person who is called [name]Esme[/name] - though her full name is [name]Esmeralda[/name].

Guilty! I actually like the sound of ez-mee more. Although I wouldn’t use it, because I couldn’t claim the connection to my grandma then, and I don’t like the idea of purposely mispronouncing my child’s name. Since I have French history, though, Esmée ensures ez-may’s pronunciation for me–when I see [name]Esme[/name] I think Ez-hm or ez-um, but when I see Esmée, I automatically think “oh, ez-may”. Maybe it’s the accent, maybe it’s just mind-games I’ve played with myself, lol.

I wouldn’t use the nn [name]Mae[/name], I’m not a fan at all. She’d be just Esmée or possibly nn’d [name]Emmy[/name].

Any other combo ideas? I’ve been thinking about [name]Genevieve[/name] as a replacement for [name]Eve[/name] lately (especially since St. [name]Genevieve[/name] was the patron saint for [name]Paris[/name], which is where my best friend was from, although I’m not sure the significance is as amazing as it sounds, as I’m [name]Christian[/name] but not Catholic, and my friend was Jewish–is it still a cool connection?), but I’m still not 100% sure on it. I had been thinking about [name]Madeleine[/name] Esmée “[name]Leni[/name]” and [name]Sophia[/name] Esmée “[name]Sophie[/name]”, as well. I’ve been thinking of [name]Helena[/name] as a replacement for [name]Eleni[/name] lately, too, although I’m not sure I especially love [name]Helena[/name] Esmée as a combo (although I do like Esmée [name]Helena[/name]/[name]Esme[/name] [name]Helena[/name]…).

I love [name]Esme[/name]- I think it could totally work, and I think it’s very sweet and classy.

I’ve considered Esmée as well. My mom’s middle name is [name]Ren[/name]ée, so I think that Esmée could be a subtle tribute to her (a very subtle tribute). I also love the meaning. My only issue is with the accent marks. I’m really not a fan of them.

ETA: [name]Just[/name] read that in French -é is the masculine ending and -ée is the feminine ending. So Esmée is actually the correct spelling for a female.

lol. I’m afraid they might be quite bothersome and cumbersome, but to me, the name isn’t complete without the accent. The only names I think I would consider using without the accents would be [name]Zoe[/name] and [name]Chloe[/name], although the likelihood of actually using those names is pretty slim as it is.

I agree completely. That’s why I struggle with this name. :frowning:

I like the name Esmee. I don’t think I would use it, but it’s meaning is beautiful. I like your combination of Esmee [name]Genevieve[/name]. I think the accent will ensure proper pronunciation and makes the name look more exotic and authentic.

[name]One[/name] of the very reasons why I prefer Esmée to [name]Esme[/name]/Esmé. While Esmé/[name]Esme[/name] looks simpler, I don’t like that it’s the unisex/masculine spelling, as I’ve got a unisex name and never really liked that about my name. Besides, my best friend was French, I have a bit of French heritage, so it seems like both a disservice to [name]Millie[/name] and my family to use something that works better in American culture, when I would specifically using it to honor those cultures.
