Esme pronunciation

Hey everyone! I am considering this name for baby #4! However, I prefer the pronunciation Ez-Mee…not Ez-[name_f]May[/name_f]. I just think it flows a little easier that way…

If you have a little [name_f]Esme[/name_f] pronounced the way I prefer, do you run into trouble correcting people all the time? I’d think with an accent it would be obviously be pronounced Ez-[name_f]May[/name_f]…but without the accent on the last “e”…? Would most people get it right and say Es-Mee? We live in the US…

The other option would be to spell it [name_f]Esmie[/name_f], but I just don’t like the look of that as much as [name_f]Esme[/name_f]! Lol

Thanks!

Well I’m not a mom, but at first glance I would say it ez-MAY, that’s the only way I’ve heard it irl, but when I see other post on [name_f]Esme[/name_f] a lot of people tend to say that people pronounced it ez-MEE too, so even if they do say it the other say it’s a super easy correction. If I would want it ez-MEE I would spell it [name_f]Esmee[/name_f], because that’s the only pronunciation I’ve heard when it’s spelled like that. (I’m in the US)

My 5 yr old niece is [name_f]Esme[/name_f] (pronounced ‘may’) and it’s about a 50/50 thing those who are familiar with the name pronounce it ‘may’ while those who have not seen it pronounce it ‘mee’

I guess [name_f]Esmee[/name_f] may work…

I don’t want to give her a confusing name… :joy: But, I feel like it flows so nicely with our other kids: [name_f]Kaia[/name_f], [name_m]Leo[/name_m], & [name_f]Mila[/name_f]…short and sweet!

The pronunciation Ez-[name_f]May[/name_f] is also okay, but not my first choice.

If anyone has an [name_f]Esmee[/name_f] I’d love to hear how it’s worked for you in the pronunciation dept and if you have any regrets😬

I think prior to NB I thought [name_f]Esme[/name_f] was pronounced the way you’re wanting it to be (seems rather intuitive IMO) BUT, I feel like since being on NB I’ve only ever understood it to be pronounced Ez-may. Didn’t think my original thinking was an actual way to pronounce.

Also, as someone also in the US, I wouldn’t necessarily rely on accents to direct people to a certain pronunciation. I don’t really understand how accents affect names so if I saw an accent it wouldn’t really direct me in one pronunciation over an other.

I do agree with the PP that suggested [name_f]Esmee[/name_f] maybe as a foolproof to avoid Es-[name_f]May[/name_f] but also prefer the [name_f]Esme[/name_f] spelling over all the other options !

Esmee would be an alternate spelling since I think it would be mistaken often as Ez-[name_f]May[/name_f]. You could spell it as [name_f]Esme[/name_f] but I’d think there would be a few pronunciation mistakes.

I pronounce is as ez-may, but it would be an easy correction.

I’ve never heard “ez-me” – I’d have a hard time with it if I met a little “ez-me.”

Maybe for consideration. Something similar but slightly less confusing and still short and sweet:

[name_f]Elsie[/name_f]
[name_f]Elise[/name_f]
[name_f]Estie[/name_f]
[name_f]Emmy[/name_f]
[name_f]Emma[/name_f]
[name_f]Elin[/name_f]
[name_f]Ella[/name_f]
[name_f]Elsa[/name_f]
[name_u]Eden[/name_u]
[name_f]Evie[/name_f]
[name_f]Etta[/name_f]
[name_f]Eve[/name_f]
[name_f]Eva[/name_f]

Eve and [name_f]Elise[/name_f] are the middle names of our other girls! Some of those are already on our short list. We are definitely not set on [name_f]Esme[/name_f]… thanks for the suggestions

I’ve only ever heard “ez-may” but it’s not a very popular name so I think you could get away with it. Where I live, and I feel like in general in the US, no one pays attention to accents so that’s really of no help unfortunately.

If I heard someone says ez-mee I would be thrown off. It’s a lot like pronouncing [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] as “rawz-zee” — It’s signing your kid up for a lifetime of corrections. :pensive:

Esmie?

Lol…I totally get it. It’s probably not the best idea. If we go with [name_f]Esme[/name_f], we’ll just stick with the Ez-[name_f]May[/name_f] pronunciation…I definitely don’t want to add any extra confusion if I don’t have to!

I have [name_f]Esme[/name_f] on my list and pronounce it Ez-mee. I know of an [name_f]Esmay[/name_f] who actually spells it that way. I do think there’ll be times of having to correct people but I get that with my name a lot and it’s not so bad!

I know an [name_f]Esme[/name_f] who pronounces her name like Ez-mee

I’d instinctively pronounce it Ez-may. Maybe [name_f]Esmee[/name_f]? But it could be an easy correction if you do choose to spell it [name_f]Esme[/name_f]

I know one and she pronounces it EZ-mee. For that reason, EZ-mee would be my instinctive pronunciation!

I have an [name_f]Esme[/name_f] and we pronounce it Ehz-may. We get all sorts and kinds of pronunciations, but it’s becoming fewer and further between.

We have an Esmeè at our church and they pronounce it Ehz-meee, as you prefer. I’m not sure if that is a typical spelling/associated pronunciation, though.

I worked with a little [name_f]Esme[/name_f], and the other teachers were pretty split on pronunciation. Some said “may” and some said “me.” She answered to both, and I have no idea which one her parents intended. I think it’s a pretty negligible difference, but maybe that’s only true in my accent.

I am thinking the same. I’ve only ever heard [name_f]Esme[/name_f] pronounced one way. If you want to say it differently, then spelling it differently is probably your best bet at not correcting people all the time.
