[name_m]Hi[/name_m] Berries,
Recently came across [name_m]Ethian[/name_m] browsing names here on Nameberry! I understand it is a variant of [name_m]Ethan[/name_m], but would you pronounce it EETH-ee-an or ETH-ee-an so basically with a long or short E?
Seeing it written down I feel like it looks like it should have a short E, but knowing it’s related to [name_m]Ethan[/name_m] makes me think it’s probably meant to be pronounced with a long E.
Anyone come across this name in real life?
E x
Ee-thee-un - like a mash up of [name_m]Ethan[/name_m] and [name_m]Ian[/name_m]
For some reason, my first thought was ee-THIGH-an. It’s a hard one to pronounce
I would pronounce it EETH-ee-an. To me it looks like an elaborated form of [name_m]Ethan[/name_m].
Probably eh-THIGH-an, too.
I think it’s rare enough for any of these to be valid pronunciations. If there isn’t a standardised, legitimate pronunciation (doesn’t seem to be from what I can find, since it’s probably an English adaptation from Hebrew and used so little) then from my perspective, it’s whatever you like.
I’d say ETH-ee-an, and assume that it’s a version of [name_m]Etienne[/name_m], not [name_m]Ethan[/name_m]. Tbh it just seems like there are too many ways to pronounce it, it’s confusing.
Thank you for all your comments!
Your comment re its similarity to [name_m]Etienne[/name_m] is interesting @sophiesimmons - I’m a fan of this name, but not its native pronunciation. I feel like I’m essentially on a mission to find a name with as close a pronunciation as I can to EH-tee-un without having to make up a spelling. Feeling more cautious than I might as when I’ve googled some spellings, e.g. Ettien and Ethiane they seem to be female names.
