I need help. My husband and I really like the name [name_m]Edison[/name_m] for a girl but we don’t want her to be called [name_m]Ed[/name_m] or [name_f]Eddi[/name_f] for short. We also love the name [name_f]Etta[/name_f] so we are thinking about calling her Ettasyn. What do you think?
I would go with [name_f]Etta[/name_f], if you don’t want her to be called [name_m]Ed[/name_m] or [name_f]Eddi[/name_f]. [name_m]Edison[/name_m] is more of a boy name for me anyway. I think Ettasyn is hard to say, and it would NEVER be spelled correctly. I think [name_f]Etta[/name_f] is very pretty on its own.
I agree with shalexis. [name_f]Etta[/name_f] is a fine name, but Ettasyn looks made up and a bit silly. I don’t like names ending in ‘son’ for girls because ‘son’ means ‘son of’, which implies it’s a boy’s name. However…maybe you’d like [name_u]Emerson[/name_u]. Nickname could be [name_f]Emmy[/name_f], which is much more feminine than [name_m]Eddy[/name_m]. Personally, I’d go with [name_f]Etta[/name_f].
[name_u]Ellison[/name_u] is also a good alternative, nickname [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] or [name_f]Ella[/name_f].
I’d just go with [name_f]Etta[/name_f] on it’s own. Ettasyn just looks horrid imo…
I would go for [name_f]Etta[/name_f] on its own, or as a nickname for the fn [name_f]Henrietta[/name_f] or [name_f]Harriet[/name_f].
Ettasyn definitely looks made up and [name_f]IMO[/name_f] doesn’t even read the same as [name_m]Edison[/name_m].
Ettasyn honestly makes my eyes hurt. Either name her [name_f]Etta[/name_f], or name her [name_m]Edison[/name_m], or look at one of the alternatives people have suggested.
I think Ettasyn sounds really nice, I guess I would maybe change the spelling though…
Please don’t do that to your kid. [name_f]Etta[/name_f] is a great name…also [name_u]Ellison[/name_u], [name_m]Edison[/name_m], [name_u]Emerson[/name_u], [name_f]Odetta[/name_f], [name_f]Cosette[/name_f], [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_u]Sidney[/name_u], [name_f]Odette[/name_f] [name_f]Augusta[/name_f]…anything but Ettasyn
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] is lovely! It’s fine on its own.
This probably wasn’t the best place to ask this… the Berries are mostly not fans of altered spellings or anything ridiculously creative. And just to add, I think [name_f]Etta[/name_f] is great.
Ettasyn looks ridiculous – like a name for a prescription wart cream or something. [name_m]Edison[/name_m] is a boy’s name. I like [name_f]Etta[/name_f] on its own.

I know we are not very supportive of really out of the box thinking.
I tend to agree with others [name_f]Etta[/name_f] is best.
I also like
Addison
[name_f]Ellen[/name_f]
[name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_u]Eden[/name_u]
[name_f]Elowen[/name_f]
and
[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u].
But I do like [name_f]Etta[/name_f]. It makes me of At Last. I recommend listening to it.
I also tend to see [name_m]Edison[/name_m] as a boy’s name, but if you want it for a girl I would spell it [name_m]Edison[/name_m]. I seem to pronounce them almost the same. Where I grew up we do tend to say d when we mean t if the letters are the middle of something. For example I sort of rhyme little with middle when I talk. My point is even with the alternate spelling you still have to worry about the nicknames you don’t like. Just[/name_m] something to consider.
Ettasyn is awful. Stick with [name_f]Etta[/name_f].
I kind of adore the idea of [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_u]Lynn[/name_u] or [name_f]Etta[/name_f]-[name_u]Lynn[/name_u].
Ettasyn looks very trashy, imo, like something an illiterate teen mom would choose. You obviously have good taste in names like [name_f]Etta[/name_f] and [name_m]Edison[/name_m]. I’d sick with just [name_f]Etta[/name_f]; short and sweet, unique yet familiar, normallly spelled, easy to pronounce. I don’t see a downside!
If your inspiration behind [name_m]Edison[/name_m] is [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_m]Edison[/name_m], you could consider other science names that would be more appropriate for girls: Tesla and [name_f]Marie[/name_f] come to mind first, but I’m positive there are several more.
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] is a very pretty name, but Ettasyn is entirely too trendy. Maybe Ettasine? It’s not quite the same pronunciation, but I think it’s nice : )
Although you may like Ettasyn I would not chose that name. It definitely looks made up. As others have suggested I would use [name_f]Etta[/name_f] or [name_f]Colette[/name_f], [name_f]Cosette[/name_f], [name_f]Odette[/name_f], [name_f]Rosette[/name_f]. I do like the name [name_m]Edison[/name_m] but [name_f]IMO[/name_f] it is a boy’s name.
I have to question this allegation, which has been brought up more than once on this thread. Taking a male name and mangling it to make it more “feminine” is not out of the box: it’s actually really, really common. See [name_f]Madisyn[/name_f], [name_f]Emersyn[/name_f], [name_u]Addisen[/name_u], [name_u]Jordyn[/name_u], [name_f]Ryleigh[/name_f], Elliotte, ad nauseum. I’ve actually found Nameberry to be an incredibly encouraging environment when it comes to truly unique and unusual names. The backlash you’ve identified is against the trendy, misspelled, misgendered names we see all too often.
