- ette names?

Hey everyone, what do you think about names like
[name_f]Annette[/name_f]
[name_f]Colette[/name_f]
[name_f]Cosette[/name_f]
[name_f]Juliette[/name_f]
[name_f]Odette[/name_f]
[name_f]Violette[/name_f]

And which one do you like the best?

Also what are your thoughts on the name [name_f]Lunette[/name_f]?

Thank you

For me, it vastly depends on the individual name. For ones where there’s a more streamlined -et version, I almost always prefer that to -ette (ie [name_f]Juliet[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f].) But just in general, I like -ette names. [name_f]Odette[/name_f] is my favorite, and also happens to be my Cajun great great aunt’s name.

[name_f]Lunette[/name_f] was the name of the main clown character on this TV show I watched as a kid, so that’s all I can think of when I hear it.

Maybe you’d like [name_f]Minette[/name_f]?

I like [name_f]Colette[/name_f] and [name_f]Cosette[/name_f] I also like [name_f]Arlette[/name_f] and [name_f]Laurette[/name_f].

The Big Comfy Couch!!! That’s my first association, as well!

To answer OP’s questions, I really do not like -ette names at all. The only one I do like is [name_f]Juliette[/name_f], but even then, I worry it is too fussy. [name_f]Annette[/name_f], [name_f]Odette[/name_f], and [name_f]Colette[/name_f] conjure images of chain-smoking women from the 60s/70s, [name_f]Cosette[/name_f] is actually really sweet, and [name_f]Violette[/name_f] just seems a bit fussy when people would likely spell it [name_f]Violet[/name_f] anyway. Sorry, don’t mean to be harsh! Those are just my impressions of the names.

My favorites from your list would be [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] and [name_f]Cosette[/name_f]!

I like Colette, Cosette, Juliette, Odette and Violette, but only pronounced in the correct French way, and not like Violet! Lunette is okay. I dislike Anette because I feel it’s dated.

Other -ette names I like are Alouette, Antoinette and Miette

I like [name_f]Juliette[/name_f], [name_f]Odette[/name_f] and [name_f]Violette[/name_f] (English speakers would probably pronounce this the same as [name_f]Violet[/name_f] though). [name_f]Cosette[/name_f] and [name_f]Colette[/name_f] are nice too. [name_f]Annette[/name_f] strikes me as rather dated.

[name_f]Lunette[/name_f] makes me think of lunettes, the [name_m]French[/name_m] word for glasses.

I much prefer [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] and [name_f]Violet[/name_f] to [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] and [name_f]Violette[/name_f], but they’re pretty. Very pretty.

Not a fan particularly of [name_f]Colette[/name_f], [name_f]Annette[/name_f], or [name_f]Cosette[/name_f], but I can see how others might like them (especially [name_f]Cosette[/name_f] - that’s kinda spunky actually).

I think [name_f]Odette[/name_f] is absolutely gorgeous. I always pairit with [name_f]Odile[/name_f] due to [name_f]Swan[/name_f] [name_u]Lake[/name_u].

[name_f]Lunette[/name_f] is probably my least favourite. It sounds made up . . . if it was actually a proper name I’d probably like it better. More objectively, it sounds pretty and the Lun- goes well with the -ette.

[name_f]EDIT[/name_f]: It is apparently a proper name, so I like it better

I love:

[name_f]Annette[/name_f]
[name_f]Colette[/name_f]
[name_f]Juliet[/name_f]

[name_f]Violette[/name_f] is my #2 favorite name

I love [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] and [name_f]Violette[/name_f] and I also like [name_f]Odette[/name_f] and [name_f]Annette[/name_f], which I think with the right middle would not be dated.

I absolutely love [name_f]Odette[/name_f], [name_f]Violette[/name_f], and especially [name_f]Lunette[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Odette[/name_f] is beautiful nn elegant but has a good deal of substance and personally, [name_f]Violette[/name_f] is very pretty, just rolls off the tongue and has lots of energy and spark. I also like [name_f]Antoinette[/name_f], and have thought about [name_f]Minette[/name_f] and [name_f]Henriette[/name_f] too.

Now [name_f]Lunette[/name_f] is a little complicated. I generally like -ette names, and I think [name_f]Lunette[/name_f] has an air of magic, mystery, and whimsy about it with the Lun- beginning. But it’s been pointed out the associations are rubbish. I didn’t know of the menstrual cup thing until I looked it up on Nameberry, and it didn’t really bother me much. However, I do know ‘lunettes’ is ‘glasses’ in [name_m]French[/name_m], and I don’t like the idea of using such a weird/silly foreign word name when it’s perfectly possible she’ll visit or even live in a [name_m]French[/name_m] speaking country and sound ridiculous. It’s just imagining it the other way around; a little Glasses would be strange to put it mildly. I do really like [name_f]Lunette[/name_f] in terms of sound and literal meaning, and it’s not technically a guilty pleasure, but I doubt I’d use it for the reason above, same goes for some other names meaning elsewhere make them not so usable.

That was quite the ramble!
