My husband and I just found out we’re having GG twins (and yes, I am on the verge of a nervous breakdown!).
We had already been discussing names and settled on [name]Eulalia[/name] (you-lay-lee-ah) for a girl.
Yes I know this is a mouthful, but it was my husband’s grandmother’s name and she raised him because his parents died when he was really little. [name]Even[/name] though it wouldn’t have been my first choice, I just didn’t have the heart to say no to him because she was so important to him. Also my favourite names are ones that have sentimental meaning behind them.
We were absolutely stumped about a name for [name]Eulalia’s[/name] sister until my husband asked me what my grandmothers’ names were. I was actually named after my grandma [name]Violet[/name], and my other grandma’s name was [name]Lorelai[/name].
My husband loves the combination, and I think that I do as well because above all else I love names that have sentimental value–rather than names that were picked for no other reason than that they sounded nice. I hate matchy-matchy or cutesy names for twins but at the same time I want them to go together.
[name]Do[/name] you like these names together? [name]Do[/name] you like these names separately? [name]Do[/name] you prefer the spelling [name]Lorelai[/name] or lorelei? [name]Do[/name] you think [name]Eulalie[/name] is a better choice than [name]Eulalia[/name]? What do you think good middle names would be (my husband’s last name is one syllable)? What about nicknames? (My husband’s granny [name]Eulalia[/name] went by Lilu (lee-loo) and my grandmother [name]Lorelai[/name] went by [name]Lola[/name].)
Please be honest, because as much as I love the meanings behind these names, I don’t want my children to feel burdened by their names.
P.S.
Sorry my post is so long, I haven’t been sleeping well because I get morning sickness at night (and all night) instead of in the morning, and I tend to ramble when I am sleep-deprived.
Your grandmothers had wonderful names! I love that you’re honoring them by using their names for your girls. I do think that [name]Eulalie[/name] is less of a mouthful than [name]Eulalia[/name]. I prefer the spelling [name]Lorelei[/name] to [name]Lorelai[/name], and the actual place on the Rhine in Germany is called the Loreley if that appeals to you. I love each of the names on their own, but also think they make a terrific pairing for twin girls without being too cutesy. I think the nicknames that seem the most natural with the names are Eulie (you-lee) and [name]Lorie[/name], but I really like the nn [name]Rory[/name] from [name]Gilmore[/name] Girls for [name]Lorelei[/name] also. [name]Do[/name] you have any guidelines for middle names? I think you and your husband have picked two great names with great personal meaning! Blessings to your family!
I love Violet also, you could use the color and/or flower to inspire middle names like:
Eulalie Iris and Lorelei Plum
Thanks so much for your sweet reply. I had never heard of the [name]Gilmore[/name] Girls until I told my friends that we were considering the name [name]Lorelei[/name]. I don’t want people to think that we named her after them. [name]Do[/name] you think everyone will make this connection? I do really like the nickname [name]Rory[/name], but my husband hates it. I also like [name]Lorie[/name] but prefer [name]Eula[/name] to Eulie because it sounds too much like [name]Julie[/name] without the J to me. As far as middle names go, I really like nature names and my husband suggested [name]Eulalia[/name] [name]Snow[/name]. I didn’t like it at first but now I think I might just love it. What do you think? We don’t have any ideas yet for a middle name for [name]Lorelei[/name], any suggestions?
Thanks you so much for the positive feedback. Because my name is [name]Violet[/name] I would feel weird about my daughters having it as their middle names. I would really like it otherwise as I like the idea of flower names for middle names.
I actually really like that, but would also worry that it’s too matchy. Maybe it wouldn’t be such a big deal since they’re middle names. I will have to ask my husband. Thanks for the suggestion!
[name]Eulalia[/name] [name]Snow[/name] nn [name]Eula[/name] is so beautiful! [name]Love[/name] it! Is your due date this winter? Would you want them both to have wintery, nature themed middle names? Also, I do think that some people will think of [name]Gilmore[/name] Girls, but I’ve never actually watched the show. If they do make the connection, I don’t think it’s a bad one at all, and it shouldn’t deter you from using [name]Lorelei[/name] or even the nn [name]Rory[/name] if that’s the nn you prefer. [name]Love[/name] [name]Eulalia[/name] [name]Snow[/name] and [name]Lorelei[/name] [name]Plum[/name] together! (reminds me of book, The [name]Night[/name] Before [name]Christmas[/name] - “While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads”)
I love these names and the meaning behind them for your daughters so much! [name]Eulalie[/name] is a bit easier to say and I do tend to like that they’d both have 3 syllables in their names, but I don’t think [name]Eulalia[/name] is that much of a difference. As far as the spelling of [name]Lorelai[/name] goes, if you’re using an exact name to honor someone, I wouldn’t change the spelling. For instance my name is [name]Cathryn[/name]. My name is not [name]Catherine[/name], [name]Kathryn[/name], or [name]Katharine[/name]. It would be weird to me if someone told me they were naming a child [name]Cathryn[/name] in my honor, but using a different spelling. I wouldn’t tell them that of course, but it would still be weird to me. lol Since [name]Eulalie[/name] is a variation of the original name, I don’t see a problem with it. It would be like someone honoring [name]Cathryn[/name] with [name]Cathleen[/name]. I hope I’m making sense. lol
I wouldn’t worry about the [name]Gilmore[/name] Girls association. You’ll probably have other moms make comments on the connection, but kids of your daughter’s generation won’t have a clue as to what the [name]Gilmore[/name] Girls is. My son’s middle name is [name]Grover[/name]. I didn’t name him after [name]Grover[/name] [name]Cleveland[/name], [name]Washington[/name], or the [name]Grover[/name] of [name]Sesame[/name] [name]Street[/name]. He was named for my great grandfather and that means a lot to me, so I don’t care what people associate his name with.
Here are some flower middle names for ya. Good luck and congrats!
[name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Azalea[/name] and [name]Lorelai[/name] [name]Magnolia[/name]
[name]Eulalia[/name] [name]Rose[/name] and [name]Lorelai[/name] [name]Calla[/name]
[name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Jonquil[/name] and [name]Lorelai[/name] [name]Daisy[/name]
I love flower and colour names! However, I am a special needs teacher and there used to be a girl named [name]Plum[/name] in another class (she wasn’t in special needs) who would terrorize my students because they were different. I just wouldn’t be able to get past the association. I do like the name [name]Iris[/name] though!
I like [name]Eulalia[/name], and in my opinion prefer that to [name]Eulalie[/name].
however i don’t think [name]Lorelei[/name] is a good twin name. it seems like quite a mouthful to say aloud and i just don’t think they are suited as their styles are too far fetched and they seem too dis-similar, but thats just my opinion.
[name]Eulalia[/name] [name]Snow[/name] seems like a great combo.
I’m glad that someone else likes [name]Snow[/name] as a middle name! I’m due next February, but I don’t need them both to have winter-inspired names.
I do really like nature names as a lot of people in my family have nature themed names. Also, my husband and I met scuba-diving and he proposed to me during a meteor shower so it would have even more meaning for us. I really love the book The [name]Night[/name] Before [name]Christmas[/name]–but as I mentioned above the name [name]Plum[/name] is not an option for me.
I like [name]Eulalia[/name] and [name]Lorelei[/name] together, a LOT. I like that you included the pronunciation, I remember a Spanish teacher of mine teaching us over and over to pronounce it Ay-oo-la-lee-ah. I like learning a new way to say it!
I like the names [name]Azalea[/name], [name]Calla[/name] and [name]Daisy[/name]. I love [name]Rose[/name] but prefer [name]Lorelai[/name] [name]Rose[/name] to [name]Eulalia[/name] [name]Rose[/name]. What about [name]Lorelei[/name] [name]Briar[/name]?
I really love your son’s name [name]Grover[/name]!! I have never heard it before but I think it’s really great, and it is sweet you honored your great-grandpa.
I also agree about the personal significance out-weighing the pop-culture reference, thanks for the support.
I’m relieved so many people like [name]Eulalia[/name] and [name]Lorelei[/name], I was worried everyone would hate them. I laughed imagining a group of students trying to pronounce [name]Eulalia[/name] in Spanish–it’s already difficult enough in English! I have a friend from [name]Argentina[/name] named [name]Olalla[/name], and apparently that is a Spanish version. I much prefer the English version though.
I thought I should add that my husband and I are pronouncing [name]Lorelei[/name]/[name]Lorelai[/name] with a strong I sound at the end (rhymes with my) rather than a strong A sound (rhymes with may) or strong E sound ( rhymes with me). I have heard it pronounced all three ways but my grandmother’s name was with a strong I sound. Does anyone know which is the correct way of saying it?
[name]How[/name] romantic to be proposed to during a meteorite shower! Some names in the “star, sky, celestial theme” would be:
[name]Lorelei[/name] [name]Aster[/name] (Greek for star, also a flower name)
[name]Lorelei[/name] [name]Vesper[/name] (Greek for evening star)
[name]Lorelei[/name] [name]Celeste[/name] (Latin for heavenly)
[name]Lorelei[/name] [name]Ciel[/name] (French for sky)
[name]Lorelei[/name] [name]Estelle[/name] (French for star)
I think [name]Lorelei[/name] [name]Briar[/name] and [name]Lorelei[/name] [name]Rose[/name] are lovely as well! Also, I think the correct and most common pronunciation of [name]Lorelei[/name] is with the strong I sound (Lor-ah-lye).
It was so romantic, I really appreciate that he tried to make it special for me. My husband isn’t normally the best when it comes to expressing his feelings on a daily basis, but he gets an A+ when it comes to big romantic gestures.
I hadn’t thought about a star theme before.
I love the names [name]Aster[/name] and [name]Vesper[/name]!
What about [name]Lorelai[/name] [name]Esther[/name]? Or does that not go well together? I also have always liked the name [name]Astrid[/name] which for some reason I thought meant star, but when I just looked it up it said it meant divinely beautiful.
I really love the combos [name]Eulalia[/name] [name]Snow[/name] and [name]Lorelei[/name] [name]Rose[/name].
I thought I should add that my great-grandmother’s name was [name]Arabella[/name] and that is an option as well.
[name]Do[/name] you guys prefer [name]Eulalia[/name] and [name]Arabella[/name] to [name]Eulalia[/name] and [name]Lorelei[/name]?
Thank you so much! You are too kind for words.
And thanks to everyone else for all the input and suggestions. It’s hard enough picking a name for one daughter, trying to name twins is nearly impossible!
