Eulalie: Is nn 'Lula' too much of a stretch?

Currently trying for first child

(favourite boys are [name]Theodore[/name], [name]Dashiell[/name] and [name]Oliver[/name])

[name]Hi[/name] everyone,

We have been ruthless with our long list of girls and have arrived at two remaining beauties - [name]Penelope[/name] and [name]Eulalie[/name]. (I know I have an unintentional greek thing going on!)

With [name]Penelope[/name] there are no issues - love the name and all the nicknames. However, [name]Eulalie[/name] is the name that really makes me melt. She is also my husbands favourite.

There will certainly be pronunciation and spelling issues - but I just love the name so much that I am willing to accept the frustrations that come with it. My husband loves the name, too… which surprises me considering how fussy he is!

The only issues are the nicknames. We would mostly call her [name]Eulalie[/name], but it is inevitable with a name like this that it will be shortened. The most obvious choice would be 'Lalie" (Laylee)… but it is terribly close to [name]Layla[/name] which is so popular here in Australia, and although it is quite pretty, I would like to maintain a point of difference (pretentious, I know).

[name]Lolly[/name] is definitely not an option - because in Australia, [name]Lolly[/name] is the household term for confectionery, so it would be like calling your child [name]Candy[/name] or Sweet. Not for me.

Ulie we’re not keen on either, sounds a bit too grown up.

We both like [name]Lula[/name], but is it too much of a stretch? It’s also in that same vein with [name]Layla[/name] but I do prefer it to Lalie.

Which of the options do you guys prefer for [name]Eulalie[/name]?

Thanks!
[name]Claire[/name]

I don’t think [name]Lula[/name] is a stretch at all! [name]Eulalie[/name] is a beautiful name, and since it’s uncommon I think people will accept whichever nickname you tell them. I love [name]Penelope[/name] (it’s my #2/3), but you and your husband clearly love [name]Eulalie[/name] most! So that’s what you should pick!

[name]Eulalie[/name] and [name]Lula[/name] for short are both great!

[name]Eulalie[/name] is a gorgeous and distinctive name. [name]Lula[/name] is great nickname–not too much of a stretch at all!

This is great news so far, thanks guys!

I was worried that using [name]Lula[/name] could create further pronunciation issues, as it’s not taken directly from the sound of [name]Eulalie[/name]… but as long as I get positive feedback from nameberries, I won’t hesitate.

[name]Lula[/name] seems like the likeliest nickname to me.

Often I think people can stretch too much for nns on this site, but that one is perfect!

[name]Love[/name] [name]Eulalie[/name] nn [name]Lula[/name]! [name]Love[/name] [name]Penelope[/name], too. [name]Penelope[/name] is one of my very, very faves. [name]Love[/name] [name]Penny[/name] and [name]Polly[/name] as nns for [name]Penelope[/name].

[name]Eulalie[/name] is beautiful!

I think [name]Lula[/name] works fine if you love, and it’s quite adorable.
If you want a nn that’s more obvious or natural, though, why not [name]Eula[/name]?

My sister would have used the nn [name]Lula[/name] for [name]Luella[/name], but I think it works fine with [name]Eulalie[/name]. Very cute!

I have the name [name]Eulalia[/name] on my list, and I love [name]Eulalie[/name] as well. If I end up using [name]Eulalia[/name], I would use the nickname Euli. (Which is similar to how my given name is shortened in Spanish/[name]German[/name], so it has a special meaning to me.)

[name]Lula[/name] is a nice nickname as well!!

Okay, so [name]Lula[/name] it will be (if we have a girl)! I’m so glad to hear everyone loves it!

[name]Do[/name] you think [name]Eulalie[/name] and [name]Penelope[/name] could be sisters, or are they too similar in sound?

[name]Susan[/name]: I adore [name]Penelope[/name] nn [name]Penny[/name]! I really am in two minds… I love that [name]Penelope[/name] if familiar yet uncommon. I almost wish [name]Eulalie[/name] was ever so slightly less obscure in the real world, so she won’t be such a shock to people (where I live in Australia).

jlm: [name]Eula[/name] is lovely and it’s a good option to have - I see it more on a young woman than a child, though.

Now for middle names… maybe that’s a whole new topic

[name]Claire[/name] x

I think it’s a better nickname for [name]Eulalia[/name].

I absolutely agree… with the ‘a’ ending, it’s an obvious choice there. I’m just a sucker for the more simple [name]Eulalie[/name], though. It seems that [name]Lula[/name] could perhaps work for her too

[name]Hi[/name], [name]Claire[/name]!

I [name]LOVE[/name] both [name]Eulalie[/name] and [name]Penelope[/name]. They aren’t too close in sound just because they end the same, in my opinion. [name]Do[/name] you pronounce [name]Eulalie[/name] yoo-lah-lee or yoo-lay-lee?

I think that it could work, I mean, [name]Eulalie[/name] contains all of the letters in [name]Lula[/name]. Most nicknames don’t even include all the letters in the full name ([name]Penny[/name], [name]Polly[/name], [name]Poppy[/name], [name]Lola[/name]–[name]Penelope[/name], for example).

Good luck!

I think [name]Eulalie[/name] and [name]Penelope[/name] sound great together.

[name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Susannah[/name]
[name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Tamsin[/name]
[name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Violet[/name] - “L” heavy, but I like it anyway.
[name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Zuzu[/name]

I think [name]Lula[/name] works great.

[name]Cecily[/name] - I pronounce ‘you-lay-lee’ which I think sounds better in our Australian accent. I think [name]Lula[/name] and [name]Penny[/name] would be pretty cute.

[name]Susan[/name] - thanks for the mn combos, I love [name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Frances[/name], too! It’s the best combo I’ve managed to come up with myself.

I would love to honour family, do you think either [name]Edith[/name], [name]Caroline[/name] or [name]Alice[/name] could work? I’m not really loving any of them…

[name]Hi[/name] again!

With yoo-lay-lee, Ulie, [name]Layla[/name], and [name]Lula[/name] are probably the most obvious nicknames. [name]Lolly[/name] makes more sense with yoo-lah-lee, I think. I agree, Ulie is a bit “grown up” because it reminds me of [name]Julie[/name], which I can better see on an adult. Out of [name]Layla[/name] and [name]Lula[/name], I prefer [name]Lula[/name] with [name]Penny[/name]. So adorable and spunky!

Hmm… Out of [name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Edith[/name], [name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Alice[/name], and [name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Caroline[/name], my favorite is [name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Caroline[/name]. The E’s in [name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Edith[/name] run into each other a bit and there’s the repeating “al” in both [name]Eulalie[/name] and [name]Alice[/name], though it’s not really an issue when [name]Eulalie[/name] is yoo-lay-lee…

Here are some other ways to honor [name]Edith[/name], [name]Alice[/name], and/or [name]Caroline[/name]:

[name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Ardith[/name]-- both [name]Edith[/name] and [name]Alice[/name]
[name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Celia[/name]-- [name]Celia[/name] is anagram of [name]Alice[/name]
[name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Cecilia[/name]-- possible long form of [name]Celia[/name]
[name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Adele[/name]-- [name]Adele[/name] and [name]Alice[/name] have the same meaning
[name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Adeline[/name]-- honors both [name]Alice[/name] and [name]Caroline[/name]
[name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Cora[/name]-- anagram of first four letters in [name]Caroline[/name]
[name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name]-- another female variant of [name]Charles[/name]
[name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Carys[/name]-- shares first three letters in [name]Caroline[/name]
[name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Calandra[/name]-- both [name]Calandra[/name] and [name]Caroline[/name] can shorten to [name]Callie[/name]
[name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Calista[/name]-- ditto
[name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Calla[/name]-- ditto
[name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Cornelia[/name]-- anagram of [name]Caroline[/name]
[name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Coraline[/name]-- ditto
[name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Carolina[/name]-- another form of [name]Caroline[/name]

Or, you can use two middle names, something like [name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Frances[/name] [name]Caroline[/name]…

[name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Frances[/name] just takes the cake. It flows well. I do love [name]Cecily[/name]'s idea of [name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Ardith[/name]. It flows, too.
[name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Edith[/name] - I love [name]Edith[/name], but the two long “e” sounds bump together.
[name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Caroline[/name] - this is good, but kind of mushy. Maybe there are too many “l’s”.
[name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Alice[/name] - I like this, but it’s kind of mushy, too. Too many “l’s”, maybe.
