Evangeline with nickname Ava

I heard Evangeline pronounced “ivanjelin” and this EE at the beginning is so bothering me. I though Evangeline is pronounced avan-juh-lin. Would later pronunciation be wrong? Not an original English speaker talking.

edit: bit more info, to me, as non-English speaker, uh-van-ge-lin would be practically the same with avan-ju-lin.

It would be uncommon

I’m pretty sure the most common pronunciation is uh-van-juh-leen

Ava-juh-lin sounds wrong to me, sorry. What about pronouncing the first sound as ehv? As in [name_u]Everett[/name_u].

I’m pretty sure this is the typical pronunciation, so I agree.

I’ve only really heard it pronounced it uh-van-jeh-leen, never ava-juh-lin. It sounds a bit awkward, especially as it’s so associated with the word evangelical

I don’t know how intuitive the nn would be. I could see [name_f]Eva[/name_f] or [name_f]Eve[/name_f] sticking more with people.

I say [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] as either “uh-VAN-juh-leen” or “ee-VAN-juh-leen”. These are the most common pronunciations in the US.

I pronounce [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] as ee-van-gel-leen. In my opinion [name_f]Ava[/name_f] would be a bit of a stretch, but not the worse thing ever.

If you’re saying the ava part of the pronunciation like the name, I think it would be an uncommon pronunciation and one you would always have to correct. But, if you’re saying the ava part as “uh-vah”, that’s how I pronounce the beginning of [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] sometimes anyway (I go between “ih-van-juh-leen” and “uh-van-juh-leen”), so it’s totally fine. I think the nickname [name_f]Ava[/name_f] would work regardless of the pronunciation, though! If [name_m]Bill[/name_m] works for [name_m]William[/name_m], [name_f]Ava[/name_f] does for [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]!

It’s incorrect.

I am a native english speaker & to me it’s… (ignore my sick voice):

It’s what I been saying. To me avan-geline and uh-van-ge-ling are pretty much the same pronunciations.

is avan-jeh-lin really so different that uh-van-jeh-leen?

@mea.ola that would be the same way I pronouncing it. To me that pronunciation is practically the same as avan-jeh-lin.

I know a few Eva’s that pronounce their name like [name_f]Ava[/name_f], so I don’t see why you couldn’t use it as a nickname. But as previous posters are saying, the full name [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] is like uh-van-jeh-leen. You would probably need to correct people if you want a different pronunciation. [name_u]Or[/name_u] spell it differently but then it’s not as pretty - [name_f]Evangelynn[/name_f].

How do you pronounce [name_f]Ava[/name_f]? [name_f]Ava[/name_f] to me has a strong A sound (as in the sound in pay) which is quite different to the uh sound

I think [name_f]Eva[/name_f] would be more intuitive (for reference I pronounce [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] as ee-van-jah-leen, or occasionally eh-van-jah-leen)

to me, these words are not that different, but I understand the confusion this thread taken on
I pronounce [name_f]Ava[/name_f] similarly to [name_f]Eva[/name_f], or more like it, I tried to avoid confusion by focusing on letter eh, because if I said [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] with [name_f]Eva[/name_f] nn, I would still wonder do people think of [name_f]Iva[/name_f] (ee-va) to me.

I think it’s pronounced similar to [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] or [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] , the letter E and the word van
