Evelyn?

So I have a few questions about the name [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]. [name_m]Feel[/name_m] free to answer as much or as little as you like. I am not looking for names just want thoughts/opinions.

How do you pronounce the name. I pronounce it Eve-lyn does anyone else pronounce it or have heard pronounced like this before.

What middle names would you give a girl with the first name [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]

What would you name siblings to a girl name [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]

Would you use the name and how popular is it where you are

Thanks

In Australia, I believe it’s exclusively pronounced “Ev-uh-lin”. I like this pronunciation including for the nickname Evvy (as distinct from Evie). I think I associate Eve-lin with the boy version of the name, like when men were called Hilary (in the US) - but that’s probably not relevant at all! It’s around number 22 for girl names in Oz, so fairly popular but I don’t actually know any little Evelyns.

Full names:

Evelyn Catherine
Evelyn Rosemary
Evelyn Lucy
Evelyn Genevieve
Evelyn Harriet
Evelyn Cora
Evelyn Ursula
Evelyn Zoe
Evelyn Anna
Evelyn Grace
Evelyn Felicity
Evelyn Eloise
Evelyn Margaret/Margot
Evelyn Tessa
Evelyn Sophie
Evelyn Clara

Siblings:

Audrey
Constance
Victoria
Adelaide
Sylvia
Marianne
Lydia
Cecily
Pearl
Camille
Rosemary

My great aunt was Evelyn so it has a familiar feel for me and I see it as an elegant, English name - but I just don’t love “Lyn” names so I wouldn’t use it myself.

I say EHV-uh-lin. I have heard the EEV-lin pronunciation, but only when used as a masculine name (Evelyn Waugh being the primary example).

Evelyn Charlotte
Evelyn Hazel
Evelyn Aurora
Evelyn Willow
Evelyn Ruby
Evelyn Claire
Evelyn Audrey
Evelyn Jade
Evelyn Piper
Evelyn Daisy
Evelyn Sage
Evelyn Cecilia

Amelia
Nora
Josephine
Adelaide
Cora

Theodore
Silas
Miles
Henry
Leo

I probably wouldn’t use it personally, but I think it’s a really nice name. It was one of the first names I remember thinking was beautiful when I was a child! It’s in the top 10 in my state, though I don’t hear it as much as I do others (Amelia, Charlotte, Olivia). I do hear Evie, Avery, Ava, etc. quite a bit, which does make seem more popular than it actually is.

This was my grandmother’s name!

I heard it both Ev-lyn and Ev-uh-lin (I’m from the Midwest USA) but never “Eve-lin” to me, that would be spelled Eve-lyn or Eve-Lynn.

Her middle name was [name_f]Catherine[/name_f].

Other options (although I think it depends on the pronunciation. Here, I am supposing Ev-uh-lin.)

[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]
[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] [name_f]Renee[/name_f]
[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] [name_f]Nora[/name_f]
[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] [name_f]Hannah[/name_f]
[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] [name_u]Ruby[/name_u]

Although it’s neat for honor reasons, it’s #9 in the US right now (1920s names are coming back) so I probably wouldn’t use it.

Siblings: [name_f]Regina[/name_f], [name_u]Louise[/name_u], [name_f]Georgia[/name_f], [name_f]Annette[/name_f], [name_f]Noreen[/name_f], [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f]

My instinct is to pronounce it Eve-lyn too, but I’ve heard people use ev-uh-lyn or ev-lyn more often. However, Eev-lyn is listed on behindthename as a legitimate pronunciation. I like all three so I tend to switch between them, though I think Eve-lin is my fave.

Middle names:

Evelyn Pearl
Evelyn Adele
Evelyn Juniper
Evelyn Margot
Evelyn Matilda
Evelyn Delilah

Siblings:

Evelyn and…

Daphne
Clara
Margot
Beatrix
Stella
Colette
Josette
Flora
Rufus
Tobias
Fergus
Jasper
Alec
Brodie
Conrad

It ranks at 22 where I am though I’m yet to meet one. I might consider it as a middle

Historically it’s eev-lin for a boy and ehv-uh-lin for a girl, but I think that has probably mutated over time and I don’t think anyone would be too surprised by a girl eev-lin. In fact it’s a top name for one of my besties, with that pronunciation! I really like it although not at the very top of my list.

For sisters I’d go with something similarly elegant and vintagey - [name_u]Florence[/name_u], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Henrietta[/name_f], [name_f]Dorothea[/name_f], [name_f]Marianne[/name_f], [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f]

How do you pronounce the name? Eh-veh-lin, this is also the only way I’ve ever heard it pronounced so I assume it’s the most common

Similar names to Evelyn—Myrtle, [name_f]Maybelle[/name_f], [name_f]Francine[/name_f], [name_f]Doris[/name_f], [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f], [name_f]Betty[/name_f], [name_f]Edith[/name_f], [name_f]Lydia[/name_f], [name_f]Ellen[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] (vintage, 1920s-50s names or names with a similar style)

Would you use the name and how popular is it where you are—I’ve never met anyone my age (18) or younger with this name, only women in their 50s and older. I know it suddenly became popular, but I’ve never seen on anyone young. In my opinion it sounds kind of out of date even though it’s popular

Growing up I thought it was pronounced Eve-Lyn and later learned that it’s Ev-uh-lin for a girl and Eve-Lyn for a boy

I now love both pronunciations but would instinctively use ev-uh-Lin for a girl and Eve-lin for a boy

i’d probably use it! even if it’s ranking for the whole of the usa is high, i don’t find that those popular names are really so popular anymore. i only know one olivia, and two emmas! i know far more chloe’s and oddly margarets who all go by nicknames (macey, maggie, mikaela etc).

[name_u]Eh[/name_u] (said like the sound in ten or then)-vuh-lyn. I wouldn’t use it as I’m over the -lyn(n) names.

I pronounce it ehv-uh-lin. I know of the other pronunciations but never hear them where I am. I know of quite a few Evelyns of all ages. It’s currently in the Top 10 where I am. Wouldn’t use it myself because I know so many, plus so many more -lyn names, but it is elegant and ages well, imo.

It’s Ev-uh-lyn. As others have said, Eve-lyn pronunciation is male. If you want [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], do a double barrel, otherwise there will always be confusion! Yes, I would consider using it, I had an aunt named [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], she was referred to as Auntie Ev.
