Ever feel like no one gets your unique taste in names?

First off, I apologise in advance for any typing errors. I have an awful keyboard and it’s hard to type with, harder yet to go backs pace.
Alright, now that’s out of the way. I am a huge name fan, and I have been since I was about ten. But it seems my taste not like that of many people. So , what unusal names do you love or whay unpopular namss do you think are not so bad?
Here are some things about me

  1. I think K for C substitutions are cool. I am a fan of names like [name_f]Kourtney[/name_f], [name_f]Klaire[/name_f], [name_f]Khloe[/name_f] and [name_f]Kandace[/name_f]. Many people hate those, but I like those kind of names.
  2. I dont like the popular names like [name_m]Atticus[/name_m], [name_m]Dashiell[/name_m], [name_m]Declan[/name_m], [name_m]Henry[/name_m]. I just don’t get them,
  3. I actually love [name_f]Rainbow[/name_f], [name_f]Flower[/name_f], [name_f]Sugar[/name_f], [name_f]Happy[/name_f], [name_f]Sunshine[/name_f], [name_f]Petal[/name_f], etc.

So now I’d like to know… do you think your name taste is different from most?

[name_f]My[/name_f] taste is a bit different- it is not that I am attempting to be try hard, it is just that those names appeal to me. I think that [name_m]Henry[/name_m] and [name_m]Dashiell[/name_m] are beautiful, but I cannot picture them on my kids- they are great names, but there are just many others that I love more.

Some of my more ‘outlandish’ favourites (and no, these are not GP. I don’t have many of those, apart from [name_f]Santa[/name_f], Belladonna and a few more, for obvious reasons.):

Girls:
[name_f]Cricket[/name_f], Owl, [name_m]Bram[/name_m], [name_f]Honey[/name_f], [name_m]Cello[/name_m], [name_m]Moe[/name_m], [name_m]Forest[/name_m], [name_u]Frost[/name_u], [name_f]Snow[/name_f], [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m], [name_u]Dove[/name_u], [name_u]Quarry[/name_u], [name_f]Novella[/name_f], [name_m]Noble[/name_m], [name_u]Love[/name_u], [name_f]Galilea[/name_f], [name_u]Finch[/name_u], [name_f]Sparrow[/name_f], [name_m]Noon[/name_m], [name_u]Dune[/name_u], [name_f]Gardenia[/name_f], [name_f]Mittie[/name_f], [name_f]Nuria[/name_f], [name_u]Freddie[/name_u], [name_u]Gussie[/name_u], [name_m]Bede[/name_m], [name_u]Domino[/name_u], [name_f]Allegro[/name_f], [name_f]Lupe[/name_f], [name_u]Pascale[/name_u], etc.

Boys:
[name_f]Cricket[/name_f], Owl, [name_m]Cello[/name_m], [name_m]Jiminy[/name_m], Aslan, [name_u]Ariel[/name_u], [name_u]Frost[/name_u], [name_f]Snow[/name_f], [name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m], [name_f]Bee[/name_f], [name_m]Seraphim[/name_m], [name_u]Dove[/name_u], [name_u]Banjo[/name_u], [name_u]Fable[/name_u], [name_u]Ocean[/name_u], [name_m]Noble[/name_m], [name_u]Love[/name_u], [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m], [name_m]Galileo[/name_m], [name_u]Finch[/name_u], [name_m]Noon[/name_m], [name_u]Dune[/name_u], etc.

Then there are lots that are considered widely unfashionable:
[name_m]Bernard[/name_m], [name_m]Gerald[/name_m], [name_m]Jerome[/name_m], [name_m]Morris[/name_m], [name_m]Moe[/name_m], [name_m]Clifford[/name_m], [name_u]Robin[/name_u], [name_m]Clarence[/name_m], [name_m]Eugene[/name_m], [name_m]Dougal[/name_m], [name_m]Ishmael[/name_m], etc.

[name_f]Wendy[/name_f], [name_u]Wallis[/name_u], [name_f]Constance[/name_f], [name_f]Agatha[/name_f], [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f], [name_f]Rowena[/name_f], [name_f]Benilde[/name_f], [name_f]Mavis[/name_f], [name_f]Augusta[/name_f], [name_f]Maxine[/name_f], [name_f]Claudette[/name_f], [name_f]Nanetta[/name_f], [name_f]Heidi[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f], [name_f]Alma[/name_f], [name_f]Honey[/name_f], etc.

So yes, I completely understand what you mean, but on NB, people tend to be more openminded towards your taste- whereas, in the real world, popular names here are considered odd. Many of the Greek names are actually more ‘correct’ with a K anyway, like Kosima, Kleodora and Kalypso. Everyone is entitled to their own taste (obviously :)), it is nice to find people who appreciate your taste.

On NB you’ll always find a group of people who like the sort of names you like. You’ll also find five groups who dislike the sort of names you like. Someone always gets your unique taste in names. I like extravagant names from mythology and books, even the made up ones from fantasy. Some people think those names are ridiculous, even outright cruel. Other people love them as much as I do. No biggie.

There are several berries who adore the names you’ve listed as loves. There was even a berry baby girl named [name_f]Happy[/name_f] sometime back. I’ve seen [name_f]Petal[/name_f] get a lot of love on here before, too.

I like K more than C on some of the Greek names. Khione instead of Chione, [name_f]Kalliope[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Calliope[/name_f].

Edited to add:

Even Swanhild and Brunhild, which are (imo) stunningly gorgeous, get some love on here. Most people don’t like them, but there are fans out there!

I like a lot of the names you said. Owl is interest ing, I never thought about that. [name_f]Honey[/name_f] I like, and [name_m]Forest[/name_m] on a girl, why not? It is a nature name. [name_f]Snow[/name_f] and [name_f]Bee[/name_f] would be cool middle names, and [name_f]Gardenia[/name_f] is great as I like nature names. Maybe I should make a user list? If I do, I will definitely post ig here.

I have a character named [name_f]Kalliope[/name_f], I just feel like it’s more rightful with an K. I’m glad someone else is familiar with [name_f]Kalliope[/name_f], too!

I think there is a difference between loving the idea of a name and actually wanting to name a child that. I’m pretty traditional in my naming, but I’m not naming a character in a novel, I’m giving a real person a name they will have to live with. I’ve found that makes a big difference in naming tastes. When I was younger I thought all sorts of names sounded fun, but then I wasn’t thinking about what it would be like to live with the name.

This (and @redwoodfey I’ve always thought your signature is beautiful). It’s why I love Nameberry so much, there’s always someone who agrees with you name-wise, and makes you feel better.
Also I think I’m starting to crush on [name_f]Rainbow[/name_f], I love [name_u]Rain[/name_u], and [name_m]Bow[/name_m] is pretty cute too.

I love names with a K instead of a C. They give me a vibe of strength, so I really like them on girls names. The only interchangeably C or K names that I can think of where I prefer the C are [name_m]Cillian[/name_m] and [name_f]Calliope[/name_f], but seeing the latter in this thread with a K might sway me to like it more as [name_f]Kalliope[/name_f] haha.

[name_f]My[/name_f] favorite boy namss: [name_u]Madison[/name_u], [name_u]Allison[/name_u], [name_u]Ashley[/name_u], [name_u]Addison[/name_u], [name_u]Courtney[/name_u], [name_u]Sasha[/name_u], [name_u]Bailey[/name_u]. I am not kidding.
[name_f]My[/name_f] favorite name of8f all time? [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u]. Unisex but I l prefer it for a girl.

[name_f]My[/name_f] husband and I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] the name [name_m]Hezekiah[/name_m]. It’s probably my husband’s favourite boy name. But usually people are a little stunned when we say we love the name (except for two of my sister’s who have amazing taste haha!).

To me, it’s not all that different to [name_m]Jeremiah[/name_m], [name_m]Zachariah[/name_m], [name_m]Jedediah[/name_m] etc, which I know people with all three of those names. So [name_m]Hezekiah[/name_m] doesn’t seem strange to me at all. At least our friends and family are [name_m]Christian[/name_m] too, so pretty much everyone knows the story of [name_m]Hezekiah[/name_m] and are at least familiar with the name!

My name taste isn’t quite as out there as others, but, some of my favourites that are often questioned/shot down;

Betsy, Nancy, India, Connie, Edie, Tillie, Minnie, Betty, Florrie, Flossie, Effie, Nellie, Hettie, Marnie, Bessie, Agatha, Doris, Ethel, Dottie, Essie, and Nettie for girls

Jamie, Blake, Dexter, Stanley, Albert, Leighton, Rafferty, Ernest, Kit, Walter, Emerson, Brogan, Percy, Aubrey, Neville, Addison and Emery for boys

Your style is yours, and yours alone. It’s something that can’t be taken away from you, no matter how odd others may think it is. Honestly, I’d name my son Neville, or my daughter Florrie in a heartbeat, but a lot of others would not. Plenty of people dislike popular names, like Lily too, and plenty of others love it, your style is something personal, and that does vary from person to person.

I have a very vintage style, but I still have names like Blake, Jamie, Cameron and Connor on my boys list, and names like Freya, Poppy and Holly on my girls list, but I dislike names like Margaret and Charles, even though they fit into my style. Another person who has a taste for vintage names might hate names like Freya, Jamie and Poppy, adore Margaret and Charles, and have names like Edna, Temperance and Gertrude on their list (which I do not).

Everyone’s different

I can’t tell if my style is vintage or classic or whatever. I like some old sounding names, such as:
[name_f]Edna[/name_f], [name_f]Harriet[/name_f], [name_f]Beth[/name_f], [name_u]Howard[/name_u], [name_f]Alice[/name_f]
but I also emjoy some modern names
[name_m]Jaxon[/name_m], [name_f]Jayla[/name_f], [name_f]Jazmyne[/name_f], [name_f]Alivia[/name_f], [name_u]Haven[/name_u],

I CAN be rry picky at times.For example, I love [name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f], but despise [name_f]Brielle[/name_f]. I like [name_u]Aidan[/name_u], but not [name_u]Aiden[/name_u]. [name_m]Topher[/name_m] but not [name_u]Chris[/name_u]. [name_f]Ella[/name_f] but not [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]. [name_f]Belle[/name_f] b7t not [name_f]Bella[/name_f]. [name_f]ISABEL[/name_f] BUT NOT [name_f]Isobel[/name_f]. [name_u]RIVEr[/name_u] and [name_u]Lake[/name_u] but not [name_u]Ocean[/name_u]. [name_m]Forest[/name_m] but not [name_m]Forrest[/name_m].[name_f]Kelilah[/name_f] bt not [name_f]Delilah[/name_f]. [name_f]Heavenly[/name_f] and [name_u]Haven[/name_u], but oh no way to [name_f]Heaven[/name_f].
Anyone else feel like that?

I can be like that;

I love [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] and [name_f]Maryam[/name_f], but not [name_f]Mariam[/name_f].
I love [name_m]Sean[/name_m] but not [name_u]Shaun[/name_u].
I love [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] and [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] but not [name_f]Isabel[/name_f].
I love [name_f]Hettie[/name_f], [name_f]Hettie[/name_f] and [name_f]Henrietta[/name_f], but not [name_f]Etta[/name_f].

Everyone has different taste. For example, [name_m]Dashiell[/name_m] is one of my favourite names and you dislike it so much, that you called it “really ugly” in the comments section of the name page. At the same time, I like a lot of the names you said you liked for boys - [name_u]Madison[/name_u], [name_u]Ashley[/name_u], [name_u]Bailey[/name_u], [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] - and I’ve loved name [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] for a girl (though I like it on boys too) ever since I was young. I think a lot of people’s tastes overlap on some things and not on others.

In real life people are often limited by the politics of family and culture and religion. For example in my family [name_m]Nicolas[/name_m] is a rampant name: [name_u]Nicky[/name_u], [name_m]Nicolas[/name_m], [name_u]Nick[/name_u], [name_m]Nixon[/name_m], [name_f]Nicolette[/name_f], [name_m]Nicolas[/name_m] III, ad nauseum [barf]

But I REALLY like unusual names because they are unfettered from history and they allow a child to fill out their name in their own unique way.

To add to you list, would you consider: [name_f]Cypress[/name_f], [name_m]Banyan[/name_m], Manzanita ( I love tree names!)

Okay, I’m sorry about the [name_m]Dashiell[/name_m] comment. You can check back and see that I apologised. I’m starting new, and have not posted anything rude in a while, and will not again.
Also, glad to see you like some o the same names as me. Let’s keep this forum fun and light hearted m please. Thanks.

Alright, I am now closing this thread. I will talk again in a different, less vague one.
