Everest and Zadig are two names we really like. One is more directed towards the nature, the other towards literature.
Everest is a long time favorite of mine, but lately I’m leaning towards Zadig. However, I was really surprised by the number of people who do not know about the novella “The Book of Fate” from Voltaire and its principal character: Zadig, a good-hearted philosopher and traveler of Ancient Orient.
I like when a name is rare, but when everybody knows about it. It is the case of Everest and Zadig, here in France. I feel like it’s different in the US and I don’t want my kid to be “the kid with the weird name” when we move back.
Is Zadig really unknown?
Does it sound too “fancy” because of the brand? We are simple, open-minded, nature-oriented people and we hate everything that’s luxurious.
Which one do you prefer between Everest and Zadig, and after our daughter Liv (Marlowe)?
The other names we consider for a boy are Elliott and August (we also love names like Zephyr, Basil, Astor, Pio, Aleph or Gustave)
I personally prefer [name_m]Zadig[/name_m] — I think it’s got a great strong, quirky sound and I do know of the novella, so I get softer literary vibes too. I love the spiky Z initial next to short, bold [name_f]Liv[/name_f].
If you’re asking which would fit in more seamlessly in an English-speaking context, however, [name_u]Everest[/name_u] will certainly be more familiar to Americans. I don’t think the novella is particularly widely known to [name_f]English[/name_f] speakers, and I have never heard of the brand.
[name_u]August[/name_u] is also a great cross-cultural choice, but having a bit of a boom in the US right now. [name_u]Love[/name_u] it though, and it brings out the sunny, vital side to [name_f]Liv[/name_f]
I’ve never heard of the novella, or the brand associated with Zadig. I think Everest meets your criteria better: everyone knows it, but very few people have it. I also prefer it with Liv. From your other choices, I like Basil and Zephyr too!
In the US, in my experience, yes its not really known at all. But if you live in a place in the US with more diverse naming then I don’t think it would stand out as being different. Even if it did stand out too much for your son’s preference it would probably be ok with a nickname like Ziggy
I’ve never heard of [name_m]Zadig[/name_m]. If you’d like something familiar [name_u]Everest[/name_u] would be better, because of the Mount [name_u]Everest[/name_u], but [name_m]Zadig[/name_m] would be intriguing too.
I love [name_u]Everest[/name_u] and I must admit I’ve never come across [name_m]Zadig[/name_m] before. I don’t dislike it but i do prefer [name_u]Everest[/name_u]
