Hello, I’m twisting my head in knots trying to settle on a few favourite girls names—narrowing my list is arduous! I prefer classic/traditional names. I love [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] with the nickname [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] considerably at the moment, but I have had only negative feedback on it do you think [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] is unsuitable for a child of today (please be honest, as I do not wish to saddle my child with a terrible name)? I’m considering alternatives.
Please can you choose a name from my list which you like or believe sounds compatible with my surname (Bresland, which is pronounced BREZ-lund, emphasis on the Z sound). Suggestions are welcome too. Many thanks for your time.
I don’t personally like [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], but it could definitely work on a baby today (I’ve seen it in the birth announcements forum a few times as well). From your list, my top 5 are [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] & [name_f]Isla[/name_f]. I will also add that 4 syllables makes a name feel like a bit of a mouthful with the surname.
You have many lovely options here but if you love [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] go for [name_f]Margaret[/name_f].
I personally prefer [name_f]Margrid[/name_f], [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f], Margali, [name_f]Greta[/name_f], [name_f]Gretel[/name_f], [name_f]Meg[/name_f], [name_f]Margot[/name_f] and the like, but [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] “[name_f]Maggie[/name_f]” is still a lovely name and option and is far more distinctive and unusual in today’s world than many more “current” names (I’ve met a half dozen babies named [name_u]Nova[/name_u] this year, for instance, and I’ve only met one named [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] in the past 5 years. I perk my ears up when I hear the classics (baby [name_f]Mary[/name_f], baby [name_f]Jane[/name_f], baby [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], baby [name_f]Susan[/name_f]) and really and truly enjoy meeting these children and think their names will age well and serve them for their lifetimes.
I also love classic traditional names! But not a fan of a [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]. It just feels a little too old woman-ish compared to other classical choices. [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] has a freshness and childlike innocence to it though but I don’t think I’d use it in itself as a first name because I prefer full names. Out of your list many compliment your surname! [name_f]My[/name_f] favourites are [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], regardless of popularity. I love it! [name_f]Abigail [/name_f] and [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] sound very nice also with your surname! The b sound in both names suit the B sounding surname in my opinion.
I like [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]! If you love it you should use it.
From your list, I also like [name_f]Lucille[/name_f], [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f], [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], [name_f]Catherine[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f], and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f].
I don’t really like [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]/Maggie, but I’m a [name_u]Brit[/name_u] so I just instantly think of [name_m]Thatcher[/name_m]. If you love it, that’s the most important thing!
Of your list the ones I like best are [name_f]Henrietta[/name_f] ([name_f]Hettie[/name_f] ), [name_f]Abigail[/name_f], [name_f]Olive[/name_f], [name_f]Lucille[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f] and [name_f]Emma[/name_f]. You have a great list!!
I think [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] works great on a current baby, especially with the nickname [name_f]Maggie[/name_f]! But, of your other options, my favorites are [name_f]Henrietta[/name_f], [name_f]Abigail[/name_f], [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], [name_f]Catherine[/name_f], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]. Also, it’s not a classic, but [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] is a fresh way to get the nickname [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], and also [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f]!
I actually love seeing [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] being used on kids today! [name_f]Margot[/name_f] is also really nice. Maybe [name_f]Marnie[/name_f], [name_u]Marion[/name_u], or [name_f]Macy[/name_f] would work ?
I love [name_f]Henrietta[/name_f] from your list. I’d also suggest [name_f]Miriam[/name_f], [name_f]Lillian[/name_f], [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f], [name_f]Ramona[/name_f], and [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] nn [name_f]Winnie[/name_f].
I’m honestly surprised you’ve gotten mainly negative feedback outside this thread! [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] is a lovely name and I’d say if you love it, use it, but others have also offered great alternatives if you want something else!
I actually really like [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], I think it would work perfectly. [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f], [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] and [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] from your list are also beautiful.
If you love [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], go with [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]. It’s you who are going to have to carry her for nine months and then give birth! [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] is a beautiful name that has been around for literally hundreds of years. The fact that you don’t hear a ton of babies called [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] now just makes it that little bit more special. Also, there are literally a ton of traditional nicknames for [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] which your daughter could use later in life if she prefers- [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], [name_f]Meg[/name_f], [name_f]Margo[/name_f], [name_f]Peggy[/name_f], [name_f]Daisy[/name_f], [name_f]Molly[/name_f], [name_f]Maisie[/name_f], [name_f]Mae[/name_f], [name_f]Greta[/name_f], [name_f]Rita[/name_f], [name_f]Midge[/name_f] and [name_f]Mimi[/name_f] all spring to mind.
I love [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]/Maggie and I think it’s usable on a 2020 baby! It’s a beautiful name and sounds lovely with your surname. [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], [name_f]Victoria[/name_f], and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] are all great names and sound nice with your last name as well.
Margaret isn’t my favorite but I do know several young Margarets (under 21) who go by [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] so I don’t think it’s unsuitable for a child. [name_m]Just[/name_m] not my style. [name_f]My[/name_f] favorites from your list are [name_f]Henrietta[/name_f], [name_f]Olive[/name_f], [name_f]Lucille[/name_f], [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f], [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f], [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f], and [name_f]Isla[/name_f]!
From your list, I like [name_f]Lucille[/name_f], [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f], [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f] and [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] the most.
In terms of variants of [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], I really like [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] and [name_f]Margot[/name_f]. [name_f]Magali[/name_f] is also lovely. I would also suggest [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] (not technically a variation of [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] but it sounds similar).
I’m not really a fan of [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] - in [name_m]Britain[/name_m] it’s a pretty dated name (I’ve never met a [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] under the age of fifty), plus there’s the [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_m]Thatcher[/name_m] connotation. But I believe Americans tend to appreciate [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] more, so I guess how it’s perceived depends on where you live?
I love [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] Bresland “[name_f]Maggie[/name_f]”! It’s definitely not unsuitable for a child of today (in fact, it was on my parent’s list and I wish they chose [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] over [name_f]Aurora[/name_f]). Names are classic for a reason, and [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] wouldn’t have been popular for so long without being a lovely name. If you’re really concerned about the feedback on [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] but would still like to use the nn [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], there are plenty of related names such as: [name_f]Margot[/name_f], [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f], [name_f]Marguerita[/name_f], [name_f]Marigold[/name_f], [name_f]Madrigal[/name_f], etc.
If you really want an alternative, these are the names I think work best with your last name, in order of most to least “[name_f]Margaret[/name_f]”-y (classic, elegant, won’t have 100 in the same grade):
Not at all! I love Margaret and I think it would be a beautiful name on a child today. One of my roommates actually has a friend who named her baby Margaret last November, and we all thought it was sweet! Margaret is a classic, and Maggie is a darling nickname. I’d honestly ignore the negative feedback and go for the name you love! No one will think the name is “unsuitable” once they meet a cute little girl wearing it.
