I want to know everything there is to know about [name]Ewan[/name]. Opinions, experiences, history, alternate spellings, meanings, etc.
My fiance and I have discussed names a few times and every time he mentions [name]Ewan[/name]. He says it’s just a cool name. I worry about the teasing potential, ewe or eww, for example. I do like that it’s close to [name]Ian[/name] and [name]Owen[/name] without the popularity.
The Nameberry post on [name]Ewan[/name] is informative and bears out what I’ve found in my baby name books–[name]Ewan[/name] is a Gaelic name with connections to both [name]John[/name] and [name]Owen[/name], among others. Other spellings are [name]Ewen[/name], [name]Euan[/name] and [name]Eoin[/name]; variations include [name]Euen[/name] and [name]Ewyn[/name].
I like the name. It’s handsome, distinctive and Gaelic The reason I would not use it is that I’d be afraid people would think I’d named my son after [name]Ewan[/name] [name]McGregor[/name]. He’s one of the only associations Americans will have with the name, in my opinion. I don’t personally know anyone named [name]Ewan[/name]. Much as I like some of [name]McGregor[/name]'s movies, I’d never name a son for him.
I also like the spelling [name]Euan[/name], and that might help with both the “eww” teasing and with the [name]Ewan[/name] [name]McGregor[/name] association.
Best wishes!
I just read the Nameberry description of [name]Ewan[/name], and was both relieved and disappointed to see that it is pronounced YOO-un. Where I live, nobody would pronounce it that way! Here, people would say EH-win, which I think is horrible and sounds like [name]Erin[/name] with a speech impediment. The YOO-un pronunciation isn’t bad, but I would go with the spelling [name]Eoin[/name], which looks more like that sound. Other suggestions would be [name]Elan[/name] (technically pronounced ay-LAN, but I know a toddler who is called EEE-lin) or [name]Olin[/name].
I like it spelled [name]Euen[/name], like Eugene. I’m making that up, but to me, it works. Plus, I automatically know how to say it, [name]IMO[/name]. I love “E” names… so this works for me. And the name makes me think of this guy: Ewan McGregor - IMDb
I love [name]Ewan[/name]/[name]Euan[/name]. I’ve never met any, but I doubt that I will in South [name]Texas[/name]… I’ve seen it three times, [name]Ewan[/name] [name]McGregor[/name], a character on a short lived tv show several years ago, and also a guest character on Psych (he was played by [name]John[/name] [name]Cena[/name], wwe).
I like how [name]Ewan[/name] has a distinct Gaelic feel to it, but my first thought was [name]Ewan[/name] [name]McGregor[/name]. Not that I have a problem with that association, but the association definitely sticks out to me.
I’m good friends with a [name]Ewan[/name] (he spells it [name]Euan[/name]) he’s as unique as his name and one of the best people i know. Funny, caring, all around great guy. Comes from a big family (he’s the oldest boy of 6 siblings!) I love the whole family haha. I think it’s a nice name although nms. I wouldn’t worry about teasing, it’s unique but not totally out there or anything
Wow! Lot’s of great feedback! I’m really starting to like [name]Ewan[/name].
[name]One[/name] more concern… My father is [name]Gregory[/name] and [name]Ive[/name] always planned to use it in the middle.
Is it off limits because of this [name]McGregor[/name] guy?
[name]Ewan[/name] [name]Gregory[/name] [name]James[/name] Surname ? (surname is 2 syllables, starts with a P, and is a common first name.)
yikes, yea, I think [name]Ewan[/name] [name]Gregory[/name] might be a little too matchy to the actor—unless you really love the actor or are willing to take a lot of comments about it.
It might be okay if you did [name]Ewan[/name] [name]James[/name] [name]Gregory[/name]. Is that out of the question?
No, it’s not out of the question. I just have my heart set on [name]Gregory[/name] being the 1st middle.
I feel like it honors my father “better”, if that makes any sense.
[name]Ewan[/name] P_____k is how most would see/hear/know it.
If you use [name]Ewan[/name] [name]Gregory[/name] [name]James[/name], be prepared for some [name]Ewan[/name] [name]McGregor[/name] comments when people see the birth announcement. After that, it shouldn’t be too much of an issue, since, as you said, most people will just know him as [name]Ewan[/name] Surname.
Personally I wouldn’t want that association, but if you don’t mind it too much, I also personally think [name]Ewan[/name] [name]Gregory[/name] [name]James[/name] is an outstandingly handsome name!
Best wishes!
