I am pregnant with #2 and we found out that we are having another boy. Our first son is [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] (zay-vee-er) and we had so much trouble agreeing on that name that I am dreading going through the process again…
My husband’s naming style seems to change with his mood, which makes things extremely difficult, plus he hates talking about names! I have been liking [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] (nn [name_m]Seb[/name_m]) this time around, but I am worried that it sounds a bit soft when compared to [name_m]Xavier[/name_m]. My husband has suggested [name_m]William[/name_m], a family name on his side, and while I really like the name (and nn [name_m]Will[/name_m]), I am concerned that it is too popular (currently #4 in Australia and I think even #1 in our state!).
There are plenty of 1 syllable names that we both like - [name_u]Rhys[/name_u], [name_m]Nate[/name_m], [name_m]Nash[/name_m], [name_m]Beau[/name_m] to name a few - but as [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] has 3 syllables, and we shorten it to Xave as a nn, I think it would be strange to have a second son with such a short name. My husband’s favourite name is [name_u]Ari[/name_u], which I like, but don’t want to use as there is another [name_u]Ari[/name_u] in my extended family and I don’t think it works particularly well with [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] either… I am so confused!!!
I think there’s no need to worry so much about matching with [name_m]Xavier[/name_m]. [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] and [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] are lovely, as are [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] and [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] (both have an unusual letter) and [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] and [name_m]Nate[/name_m]. What about [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] nn Xave and [name_m]Nathan[/name_m]/[name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m] nn [name_m]Nate[/name_m]?
I really like [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], I picture a sailor out on adventure on the high seas–not soft at all. [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] is nice too.
I’m going to go out on a limb here and suggest that you don’t worry about how well your sons’ names go together (only if they are too similar). My 3 brothers, and my husband and his brother grew up in beautiful sib-sets and lost a lot of their identities growing up. Teachers would constantly get them confused with each other. Also if you try too hard to make sure your first two have beautifully coordinating names you are stuck in that pattern should you have a third. Pick the name that speaks to you without worrying if it matches (or doesn’t match) his older brother.
I [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] the name [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]. I don’t think they particularly have to match. Out of those options, I like [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] [name_u]Rhys[/name_u]…
I can sympathize! We’re expecting our second boy and the name conversations are so stressful. I’d agree with other commenters that you shouldn’t worry overly much about a matching sibset. I think as long as they aren’t completely on different planets in terms of style, you’ll be fine. I also like [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] and [name_m]William[/name_m] (we’re considering [name_m]William[/name_m] for ours!). [name_m]William[/name_m]'s popular but not trendy; it’ll always be in fashion and never sound dated. Good luck.
[name_m]Xavier[/name_m] and [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] is awesome together.
I think a one syllable name is fine. Especially if they go together stylistically there’s no reason to feel that you have to match the number of syllables. [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] and [name_m]Nash[/name_m] are a great set.
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you like any of the other [name_m]Wil[/name_m] names? [name_m]Wilford[/name_m], [name_m]Willard[/name_m], [name_m]Willem[/name_m], [name_m]Willis[/name_m], [name_m]Wilton[/name_m], etc.
What about?
[name_m]Wesley[/name_m]
[name_m]Wyatt[/name_m]
[name_m]Ezekiel[/name_m]
[name_m]Quentin[/name_m]
[name_u]Quincy[/name_u]
[name_m]Dashiell[/name_m]
[name_m]Darius[/name_m] (which could have nn [name_u]Ari[/name_u])
[name_u]Darien[/name_u]
[name_m]Zachary[/name_m] (another with nn [name_u]Ari[/name_u])
Ariston (nn [name_u]Ari[/name_u]) would be great w/[name_m]Xavier[/name_m]! Ariston is a common ancient Greek name shared by poets and rulers of Sparta, among others.
I love [name_u]Ari[/name_u]!
[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_m]Isaiah[/name_m]? Not sure about a nn for it though
We are also expecting another boy and can’t find a name either! First son is [name_m]Gavin[/name_m] and trying to find something to go with it.
I also think [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] and [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] sounds great together. [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] is on the softer side, but still very strong sounding, imo. I think [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] and [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] would be nice too, but [name_m]Nate[/name_m] and [name_u]Ari[/name_u] are way too nicknamey to me next to [name_m]Xavier[/name_m]. [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m] nn [name_m]Nate[/name_m] would be perfect. I would go for something a bit less common than [name_m]William[/name_m], handsome as it is.
Some other ideas:
[name_m]Vincent[/name_m]
[name_m]Tobias[/name_m] nn [name_u]Toby[/name_u]
[name_m]Julian[/name_m]
[name_m]Caspian[/name_m] / [name_m]Cassian[/name_m] / [name_m]Cassius[/name_m] (nn [name_m]Cash[/name_m]?)
[name_m]Quentin[/name_m]
[name_m]Lucian[/name_m] / [name_m]Lucius[/name_m]
[name_m]Lennox[/name_m]
[name_m]Ozias[/name_m]
[name_m]Ignatius[/name_m] nn [name_m]Nash[/name_m]
[name_m]Dashiell[/name_m] nn [name_u]Dash[/name_u]
[name_m]Dominic[/name_m]
[name_u]Dorian[/name_u]
[name_m]Darius[/name_m]
[name_m]Marius[/name_m]
[name_m]Felix[/name_m]
[name_m]Xavier[/name_m] and [name_m]Silas[/name_m]
[name_m]Xavier[/name_m] and [name_m]Roman[/name_m]
[name_m]Xavier[/name_m] and [name_u]Theo[/name_u]
[name_m]Xavier[/name_m] and [name_m]Milo[/name_m]/[name_m]Miles[/name_m]
[name_m]Xavier[/name_m] and [name_m]Otis[/name_m]
[name_m]Xavier[/name_m] and [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u]
[name_m]Xavier[/name_m] and [name_m]Dominic[/name_m]
[name_m]Xavier[/name_m] and [name_m]Lucas[/name_m]
[name_m]Xavier[/name_m] and [name_m]Asher[/name_m]
[name_m]Xavier[/name_m] and [name_m]Frederick[/name_m]
[name_m]Xavier[/name_m] and [name_u]Tristan[/name_u]
Thanks for your advice and suggestions everyone. I think I have been over thinking the whole sibset thing a bit, but I just remember growing up with kids whose names were so obviously different to that of their siblings that I was always left wondering why their parents gave one child a great name and the other a terrible one! So i guess I want to avoid that kind of situation…
I love some of your suggestions, many are names that I love and would be more than happy to use, but my husband hates - cue [name_u]Arlo[/name_u], [name_m]Asher[/name_m], [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], [name_m]Elijah[/name_m], [name_m]Isaiah[/name_m], [name_m]Lennox[/name_m], [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m], [name_m]Tobias[/name_m]… and then there are the names that I love but are either really popular here, or friends and family have recently named their children, like [name_m]Dominic[/name_m], [name_m]Isaac[/name_m], [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], [name_u]Tristan[/name_u], [name_m]Zachary[/name_m]…
I also really like [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] and [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] together.
There are some longer syllable options for your 1 syllable nicknames that you both like.
[name_m]Nate[/name_m] - [name_m]Nathan[/name_m], [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m]
[name_m]Nash[/name_m] - [name_m]Nashua[/name_m] (i’ve met the sweetest little boy with this name before)
I really love [name_m]Xavier[/name_m]! And I love your pronunciation. I think [name_u]Ari[/name_u], [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], and [name_m]William[/name_m] are all fab with it (and [name_m]Beau[/name_m], [name_m]Nash[/name_m], and [name_u]Rhys[/name_u]!). [name_m]Beau[/name_m] is easily my favorite–I don’t think [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] and [name_m]Beau[/name_m] are mismatched at all. [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] is my second favorite; then [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], [name_u]Ari[/name_u], [name_m]William[/name_m], and [name_m]Nash[/name_m], in that order.
