Hello berries,
I have a very serious question to put forward. Hubby and I are considering two very Gaelic names with our common Elnglish(although technically welsh) last name which is Edwards. We want to keep original gaelic spellings. Does anyone have experience with it being a hassle to correct people even with a common last name?
Combos we want to use:
[name_m]Alasdair[/name_m] [name_m]Cillian[/name_m] Edwards, [name_m]Eamon[/name_m] [name_u]Finlay[/name_u] Edwards and [name_f]Niamh[/name_f] [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f]
would those combos cause issues for you with Edwards as a last name?
I only ask because having a common last name really becomes frustrating when considering popularity but i don’t want our children to hate us for giving them difficult names.
Thanks,
I think it would be fine. My first name is the anglicised spelling of a Gaelic name, but I honestly wish it was the original spelling, especially as my name gets mispronounced often enough as it is and I don’t mind!
I also think [name_f]Niamh[/name_f] in particular is becoming more well-known, so I think the percentage of people outside of [name_f]Scotland[/name_f] and [name_f]Ireland[/name_f] who would correctly pronounce it, while still being small, is growing. It is a beautiful name, especially paired with the lovely [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f]!
[name_m]Alasdair[/name_m] and [name_m]Eamonn[/name_m], if they were mispronounced, would only be a matter of a few sounds which could easily be corrected.
Good luck!
I actually really enjoy and appreciate the contrast. It’s beautiful and all of your combos are beautiful as well and sound great with Edwards and all together.
I really enjoy Gaelic names, so basically anything you put in front of me I can pronounce. For example, Ceibhfhionn is pronounced like Kayvin. The only names that I think could possibly cause problems are [name_f]Niamh[/name_f] and [name_m]Eamonn[/name_m]. [name_m]Eamonn[/name_m] isn’t too difficult, and [name_f]Niamh[/name_f] may be just popular enough that you don’t have to worry about it. My name is fairly difficult to pronounce, but I don’t mind it at all
Thanks for the feedback! Really appreciate it
