Fall and Winter Holiday Names

I love unusual names and word names (sometimes). Not a fan of the [name_m]Wrecker[/name_m], [name_m]Striker[/name_m], [name_m]Danger[/name_m] sort.

[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] and winter and all their holidays are my favorites so I’ve been thinking of names I associate with them. [name_m]Just[/name_m] throwing them out (don’t worry, I’m not expecting, nor will I be).

For early fall, my favorites are [name_f]September[/name_f], [name_f]October[/name_f], [name_f]Season[/name_f], Harvest, [name_f]Russet[/name_f], and for a male (cat perhaps?) Michaelmas ([name_f]England[/name_f]'s harvest feast) or [name_u]Golden[/name_u] or [name_u]Auburn[/name_u].

For Halloween, I nominate Snoopy (as well as [name_m]Linus[/name_m]). Also the name of a delicate heirloom gourd, Porcelain.

For later fall/early winter, I love [name_u]November[/name_u], [name_u]December[/name_u], [name_u]January[/name_u] (and all its versions: [name_m]Januario[/name_m], [name_m]Gennaro[/name_m], [name_u]Janvier[/name_u], etc.) as well as [name_u]Winter[/name_u], [name_u]Frost[/name_u], [name_m]Squall[/name_m], [name_u]Gale[/name_u], and [name_u]Storm[/name_u]. I love [name_u]Ember[/name_u] as a nn (or name) and [name_u]December[/name_u] could be nn’d [name_u]Desi[/name_u].

For Hanukkah, I don’t want to accidentally choose a word that would be offensive, but I always think of the beautiful silver, blue, and white motif and the word Chalice comes to mind.

For [name_f]Solstice[/name_f], Druid, which, if it wouldn’t work on a male, would make an amazing slim ginger tom cat.

I think of beautiful words too that suggest church services, like Vespers or [name_u]Vesper[/name_u] as well as Cathedral, Candelabra, and my favorite, Evensong ([name_f]Eve[/name_f], [name_f]Evie[/name_f], [name_f]Evening[/name_f], [name_f]Evenie[/name_f], etc.).

For [name_u]Christmas[/name_u], we have [name_m]Bedford[/name_m], [name_m]George[/name_m], [name_u]Bailey[/name_u], [name_f]Zuzu[/name_f], and [name_f]Petal[/name_f], but what about Capra? Great jaunty name. From The [name_m]Bishop[/name_m]'s Wife, I favor [name_m]Niven[/name_m] and [name_u]Cary[/name_u] and [name_f]Loretta[/name_f].

And, finally, for [name_m]New[/name_m] Year’s [name_f]Eve[/name_f], my favorite bandleader of yore, [name_m]Guy[/name_m] and Lombardo.

And for the whole season, what about Festiva, Festive, or Festival?

Anybody want to add their own idiosyncratic notions?

I forgot [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] and [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] as well as [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] and [name_u]Yule[/name_u]. And if I were gonna like a [name_m]Striker[/name_m] type of name, it would be Boxer for the English Boxing [name_u]Day[/name_u] after [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] (or boxer dogs).

Thanks for the wonderful suggestions, I also love these dark times of the year. For [name_u]Christmas[/name_u], [name_f]Noelle[/name_f] is a common [name_m]French[/name_m] name that means [name_u]Christmas[/name_u]. Not my favorite, but it definitely belongs on your list!

As you can see, I have a few seasonal names on my list as well, love them!

Btw, one of the characters in my book is called [name_m]Lord[/name_m] Festivius. But it’s kind of a jokey reference to Seinfeld (“Festivus for the rest of us”).

This is a fun thread! I love the mention of Evensong and Festivius.

These waill all be names that are used commonly with a connection to [name_u]Christmas[/name_u].

[name_f]Lucia[/name_f] (St. [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] day is a celebration in [name_u]December[/name_u])

My first thought was just plain old [name_u]Winter[/name_u]!
I also know a woman named [name_f]September[/name_f] and she actually wears it very well, [name_f]IMO[/name_f].

Some great additions! I can’t believe I forgot [name_f]Carol[/name_f] and [name_f]Garnet[/name_f].

[name_f]Holiday[/name_f] and [name_f]Garland[/name_f] are fun too.

I’ve come to realise I prefer [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] and [name_u]Winter[/name_u] over [name_f]Spring[/name_f] and [name_f]Summer[/name_f]! So in terms of names…

Christmassy/wintery…

Apart from obvious ones like:
[name_u]Noel[/name_u]/[name_f]Noelle[/name_f] - in that vein other than [name_f]Nathalie[/name_f] etc. there’s also [name_f]Natasha[/name_f]
[name_f]Holly[/name_f]
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f]

I could think of:
[name_f]Julia[/name_f]/[name_f]Juliet[/name_f]/[name_m]Julian[/name_m]/[name_m]Julius[/name_m]/[name_u]Jules[/name_u]/Julin - Jul is the word for [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] in the modern day [name_u]North[/name_u] Germanic languages
Kerstin contains the Dutch word for [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] (the [name_m]Christ[/name_m] part)
[name_f]Lumi[/name_f]/Edur/Edurne/[name_f]Gwyneira[/name_f]/Eirlys/[name_u]Yuki[/name_u]/Miyuki - all refer to snow in various languages
[name_f]Lys[/name_f] is Norwegian (and I think also Danish) for ‘light’
[name_f]Stella[/name_f]/[name_f]Estelle[/name_f]/[name_f]Estella[/name_f]/[name_f]Estrella[/name_f]/[name_f]Etoile[/name_f] - all meaning star
Polaris - the [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_f]Star[/name_f]
[name_f]Aurora[/name_f] - reference to [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] Borealis mostly visible during the winter months and late autumn
[name_f]Nadezhda[/name_f] - Russian for hope, and actually a well established name

[name_u]Winter[/name_u] flora (apart from the already mentioned [name_f]Holly[/name_f] and [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]):
[name_u]Spruce[/name_u]
[name_f]Pansy[/name_f]
Hellebore (though I am not sure it’s really all that nice to have a name containing the word ‘Hell’)
Alyssum
[name_f]Camellia[/name_f]

If you’re feeling ‘extra’
Cranberry
Mistletoe

There’s also Calluna, which I associate with the beginning of autumn all the way through to winter!

I enjoyed the additions of [name_m]Balthazar[/name_m] and [name_u]Spruce[/name_u]. [name_m]Zesty[/name_m], refreshing names.

And Cranberry and Mistletoe - great cat sibset!

Such a fun idea!
For fall…
