Hey all,
So we’ve been somewhat set on Jonas Michael Wilder as our top boys name for years.
My grandfather and my husband are both John and “Jon”/Jonathon respectively. Anywho, then we started watching This Is Us and I am starting to fall in love with Jack, but it’s so acutely popular in Australia and Number 6 in my state.
My Mum was sharing her love of the name without realising that I have been obsessing over it.
My biggest concerns are:
- It’s so popular, though I work in early childhood education and only met one.
- It may not fit with the aesthetic of other names we like: Elena or Eliana, Rhodes, Camila, Hollis, Conrad
But I love the name and the connection to my family, also like the meaning as we would concieve via IVF. Should we keep it on the list? Talk me in or out!

I had the same problem with one of our top picks for a girl (Emily) – I was so worried it was too popular, it was holding me back from feeling confident about using it. But then I started to take stock of actual babies born in my area with the name (via my local hospital’s online nursery) and after a year of checking in I had not seen a single [name_f]Emily[/name_f]! I know it’s a popular name, statistically speaking, but it reassured me to realize that doesn’t necessarily mean my daughter would be doomed to share a name with 7 classmates. [name_m]Even[/name_m] the most popular names are less “everywhere” than they once were!
I also think [name_u]Jack[/name_u] fits in quite well with your other picks! They have a vintage feel that rides the line between spunky and sophisticated, and I think [name_u]Jack[/name_u] can pull that off as well.
Ultimately, it comes down to whether you love the name more than you fear using it due to its popularity. If you truly love it and could imagine yourself with a [name_u]Jack[/name_u], then I don’t think it deserves to be completely discarded just because of the stats!

I do think Jack works with pretty much any name aesthetic - it’s utterly timeless. It’s a fun way to honour a John
As for popularity, I feel like Jack is similar to Elizabeth or Joseph, popular because it’s a classic rather than ‘trendy’. There will always be people with these names but they really can’t become overused unlike say, Harper or Noah which are really in the spotlight atm but don’t have a long history of regular use.
This is also true! There’s so much more variety these days that even the top ranking names are less likely to meet someone with the same name than a #6 name would have been in the past.

I’d keep it on the list for now. It’s pretty cool, versatile and meaningful to you

I’m here to talk you in! First off, [name_u]Jack[/name_u] is such a handsome, versatile name that I don’t see clashing at all with your other choices. Also, I wouldn’t worry too much about the popularity charts. I think the number of people you personally know with that name makes a greater impact on its usability. For example, I know 5 Bens of the top of my head, so I probably wouldn’t use the name [name_u]Benjamin[/name_u]. Yet, for the name [name_m]Peter[/name_m] or [name_u]William[/name_u], I think I may only know one of each.
Anyway, [name_u]Jack[/name_u] is so lovely. Keep it on the list if you love it!

[name_m]Jonas[/name_m] is my top favorite boys name, and my husband vetoed it immediately, so of course I think you should stick with it!
((Additionally I know a lot of baby and toddler Jacks. ))
