Family initials

Do you consider what the family’s first initials spell out? If we go in age order ours will be GAV, until we get another baby. Obviously if you go in reverse order it spells something unfortunate.

Is that an issue?

I think it would be so rarely spelled out like that, it wouldn’t bother me (unless it was something really obvious, for example, three kids all with K names)

I’ve never in my life thought of my family’s names as spelling something. I don’t think this matters one but in choosing names! No one will ever need to know it! Ours are MAHV, now that I’m thinking about it… and I feel pretty ambivalent.

I don’t think anyone would find it odd that your family’s initials in age order backwards spell an abbreviation of vagina. Not that that’s a bad thing at all anywho, in my mind! But in short, I think you’re totally all right!

This is mum, dad and baby. I can only ever imagine it one day happening if we’re playing scrabble or similar and have to put our initials across the top of the scores

I don’t think it’s a huge deal. Family initials are rarely, if
not never, spelt out. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if there’s a game where you enter your initials, it’s going to be between you and your family. I didn’t even get the reverse GAV thing until you pointed it out. You’re good to go.

[name_f]My[/name_f] mom is incredibly anal about this because she likes to sign our holiday cards with the family acronym so I know exactly what our initials spell and we chose our dogs’ names based on it lol.

We’ve been GALES, EAGLES, and GLEAMS, and now we’re GAMBLES

Fwiw, before we adopted our second dog though, our options would’ve been SAG or GAS (or insert a K in there for the first dog) so clearly it wasn’t a dealbreaker.

Hell, people don’t even seem to care (during the process of naming) when it’s three kids with K names. I have second cousins who are a set of siblings named [name_f]Kara[/name_f], [name_f]Kylie[/name_f], and Kieran…

I’ve never seen the initials of different family members combined like that. That just doesn’t happen in my culture, so I wouldn’t worry about it.

I don’t see what kind of situation would make you spell out your family’s initials in reverse order. If someone ever holds you at gunpoint (unlikely) and demands you to say your family’s initials in reverse order (very unlikely), you can just switch the parents’ initials!

This is something I actually think about solely because I notice it during [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] time when people have stockings with their initials. That being said, I think as long as the initials don’t spell something really horrible then it isn’t a huge issue. I can’t see why you’d ever put your family’s initials in reverse age order so I think GAV is perfectly fine.

[name_f]My[/name_f] BIL and SIL planned on naming all their kids with K’s but now that they’re at two kids they’re not sure if they’ll do it for a third. I’m interested to see what they choose to do. I don’t think it’s a huge deal either way, but I can see why this would bother people.

[name_f]My[/name_f] second cousins with the K names seem to (based on old [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] photos I’ve seen from their house) had stockings with designated colours rather than their initials. These were the same colours of things they got when Great Grandma would give out small gift items (like piggy banks, bracelets, etc.) to everyone at family reunions.

I think for families that could run into issues with initials spelling something (or just repeated initials in general even if they don’t spell/stand for something questionable) colours, designs, or stockings that are part of a set without including initials (such as a set of stockings I saw in a store based on the [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] The Pooh characters) are a good option.

I honestly never even thought to do this. I think mine is….well, I have a merged family. So it’s long. But GCEBKRCR….doesn’t look like anyone else thought about it either. :sob:

In my husband’s extended family, we sometimes refer to each other via text by our family initials. (Like, “when will JCTAF be there?”) [name_f]My[/name_f] family is ADJWZSMA. [name_u]Or[/name_u] we’ll have our initials across the top of a score sheet for a game. But it’s never been a big deal.

I do know a family that is ABCDE - the parents were A and B, so they went for it with their kids. It’s the kind of subtle theme that people don’t notice unless you point it out, and the names all work together so it’s just fun.

I didn’t even think about using initials for that, because it doesn’t work in my family - we’re SMSSM. I suppose reversed order could happen as you usually write down the order you’re sitting in, but if you’re really bothered by VAG, you can always just write VMomDad instead.

I suppose family initials are only a thing if you’re making it a thing. To sign your Christmas cards as “the EAGLES” like @SparkleNinja18 's family is pretty cool - but Kara, Kylie & Kieran most likely won’t sign theirs as “the KKK”, so, no problem here.
