My DH and I just found out we are having our first boy (after two girls!). We are so excited! We have loved the name [name]Ezra[/name] since we got married and we’re pretty set on using it as a first name. I always thought we would go with the middle name [name]Finnegan[/name] or even [name]Flynn[/name], but my DH all of a sudden sprung on me the idea of using his middle name-[name]Milton[/name]. I think [name]Ezra[/name] [name]Milton[/name] sounds pretty geeky, but I really don’t want to be shallow about it. Especially considering the fact that by a strange coincedence his maternal grandfather’s middle name is [name]Milton[/name], his paternal grandfather’s middle name is [name]Milton[/name], and his father’s middle name is [name]Milton[/name]. Weird, huh?
Plus [name]Ezra[/name] [name]Finnegan[/name] blends so much better with [name]Ivy[/name] [name]Zofia[/name] and [name]Eden[/name] [name]Fiona[/name]…but does that really matter?
I think in the long run you will grow to love the family middle name more. I dont [name]LOVE[/name] my children’s middle names but I do love that they honor people we love.
I am a huge fan of honoring family, so I find that idea very appealing, personally, although [name]Ezra[/name] [name]Milton[/name] does feel very geeky to me, too! I love [name]Ezra[/name] [name]Finnegan[/name]/[name]Flynn[/name], and I agree, it goes great with [name]Ivy[/name] [name]Zofia[/name] and [name]Eden[/name] [name]Fiona[/name]! Are the girls’ MNs honoring? If not, I don’t think it’d be a big deal to go for [name]Ezra[/name] [name]Finnegan[/name], but if it means a lot to your husband I would seriously consider it. Could you possibly use his FN–would that sound any better?
Personally I think [name]Ezra[/name] [name]Milton[/name] sounds awesome. I actually really like it. [name]Milton[/name] sounds like a “hidden gem” name to me.
My middle name was a family name, and my brother’s middle name was after our grandfather and I am glad. I much prefer family names as middles, because it is more meaningful. Everybody wants to feel like they are apart of something bigger than themselves, and our heritage and family plays an important role in satisfying that, [name]IMO[/name].
Would you consider using two middle names? If not then I would stick with the family name, especially since it sounds like it would make your hubby happy. I wouldn’t worry about the sibset that much because nobody else will, especially when it comes down to the middle names.
We haven’t really discussed using my husband’s FN, although I had thought about it. I’m just afraid to bring it up-he might like the idea! LOL…I really love [name]Ezra[/name].
You’re right-The more I think about [name]Ezra[/name] [name]Milton[/name], the better it sounds.
I brought up using two middle names to my husband and he blew it out of the water. [name]Ezra[/name] [name]Finnegan[/name] [name]Milton[/name]? [name]Ezra[/name] [name]Milton[/name] [name]Finnegan[/name]?
[name]Ezra[/name] [name]Flynn[/name] [name]Milton[/name]? [name]Ezra[/name] [name]Milton[/name] [name]Flynn[/name]? I guess he thinks its overdoing it. ::Sigh:::
I also am a fan of choosing middle names with family/other significance. [name]Ezra[/name] [name]Milton[/name] actually sounds pretty cool to me in a hip old man kind of way ttytt. Plus it being your dh’s mn, that just clinches it for me. But like I said, all my kids have mns’s chosen for meaning and growing up with a trendy name just because “my parents liked it” is not something I have ever enjoyed. That isn’t to say that there is anything wrong with choosing a name just because you like it of course, I just would personally rather put some sort of significance into at least one of the names.
I like [name]Ezra[/name] [name]Milton[/name] - it’s a strong name with meaning. It gets my vote!
Plus, if you used [name]Flynn[/name] or [name]Finnegan[/name], he’d have the same initials as [name]Eden[/name] [name]Fiona[/name]. Not a big deal, but would your other daughter feel left out?
I do agree with you that both [name]Flynn[/name] and [name]Finnegan[/name] sound great with [name]Ezra[/name] (and I love [name]Ezra[/name] too!).
I love [name]Ezra[/name] [name]Finnegan[/name]! I understand why your husband likes the idea, but I personally think it matters more that you choose a name you love, especially since your daughter’s don’t have mn’s to honor anyone. Good luck! =]
Personally, I’d go with trendy. But family is a pretty safe choice, I’m just not into it.
I find it kind of boring, and just…I mean you don’t know that your child will like the person their named after, I’d HATE it if I was named after my parents, I don’t want the pressures of being named after them. I have a family middle name, and I’ve only met the person twice, only one time I can remember. She’s lovely, but really and truly being named after her doesn’t mean much if anything to either of us. She didn’t even remember until she met me again at 16, and then it was just a whatever thing.
I’d go with a middle name I loved, and if it’s trendy but not family then so be it.
[name]Ezra[/name] [name]Finnegan[/name] is a the clear winner from what you’ve posted, imo.
I don’t find [name]Milton[/name] geeky at all, more quirky, though I think that’s based off the comedian [name]Milton[/name] [name]Jones[/name] (look him up if you’ve never heard of him, he’s pretty funny) which is the only association I have with the name. I think either combination works brilliantly, and it’s up to you how important honouring is.
I actually think [name]Ezra[/name] [name]Milton[/name] sounds better than [name]Finnegan[/name]/[name]Flynn[/name]. And let’s not forget that geeky is cool these days. People take pride in being geeks/nerds.
[name]Ezra[/name] [name]Milton[/name], hands down! I think it’s nice for your first son to share a mn with so many in the family. I think fam names def trump ‘just a name you like’ for middle names.
