Family Name or OG Name or Both - Can’t decide!

Hello, everyone! [name_m]How[/name_m] are you?

So, my husband and I are currently trying to conceive, and we have a boy’s name decided already; no second thoughts ([name_u]Jamison[/name_u] [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]).

But girl’s names…oh my goodness, we can’t decide for our lives on a girl’s name! So, I’m here to ask for some help and suggestions!

We like more unique names; ones you don’t see everywhere. That one is really important to me - I don’t want a name that every other girl in her class will have.

I’m also big on middle names having a lot of meaning; honoring someone we love. I really want to try to name a girl after my mom, who passed away very suddenly two years ago. I’m still missing her very much, and I want to pass down as much of her as I can to my children.

My mom’s name was [name_f]Charlene[/name_f]. Growing up, she was always called [name_u]Charlie[/name_u]. I’m not the biggest fan of the name [name_f]Charlene[/name_f], but I’d be fine with it as a middle name. I actually love [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] as a first name. The only problem is that I’m starting to see it everywhere now, and I go back and forth on it all the time.

The other name that’s really important comes from my husband’s side of the family - literally all of the women on BOTH sides have [name_f]Susan[/name_f] as either a first or middle name. Some even have [name_f]Sue[/name_f]. I’m not the biggest fan of the name in any form, lol, but it’s important to continue it on.

To combine the two, we came up with [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] [name_f]Sue[/name_f].

Everyone from both our families - and my husband - absolutely love it, but I just…don’t. I don’t like the way it flows. It’s too ‘country’ sounding for me. Or cartoonish. It’s hard to pinpoint, but it rubs me the wrong way. I hate that I think that, but I cannot let it go.

We can’t decide whether to go with a family name for the first and middle name, or just the middle name. We have so many (too many!) OG first names that we love, but none of them seem to pair well with [name_u]Charlie[/name_u]/[name_f]Charlene[/name_f] and [name_f]Susan[/name_f]/[name_f]Sue[/name_f].

If we go with family names as middle names, we’d be fine with two middle names, as I have two middle names and it’s sort of a tradition. But we can’t figure out a combo that would flow with a first name. Sigh.

Here are a few of our picks for first names (some ARE a little trendy, I’ll admit, but I still love them):

[name_f]Alessandra[/name_f] (Our top favorite…my family is full Italian, and we’ve been leaning toward a lot of Italian names)
[name_f]Aurora[/name_f] (another favorite)
[name_f]Elenora[/name_f]
[name_f]Freya[/name_f]
[name_u]Langley[/name_u]
[name_f]Magdalena[/name_f]
[name_f]Leonie[/name_f]
[name_f]Anais[/name_f] (his side of the family is very [name_m]French[/name_m] - they call his grandmother Meme for Mémère - so [name_m]French[/name_m] names are another thing we’re leaning toward)
[name_m]Kodie[/name_m] (my name is [name_f]Kara[/name_f], and I was named after my aunt [name_f]Karen[/name_f], so we liked the idea of continuing the ‘K’ tradition)
[name_u]Kennedy[/name_u] (more common now)
[name_f]Kalene[/name_f] (pronounced [name_u]Kay[/name_u]-lene, an Irish name, and also a mix of my name, my aunt’s name, and my mom’s - we were always the 3 musketeers, so l loved the idea of combining them all together)
[name_f]Luna[/name_f]
[name_u]Rue[/name_u]
[name_f]Bizzy[/name_f]
[name_f]Violet[/name_f] (family name)
[name_f]Marcella[/name_f]
[name_f]Luciana[/name_f]/[name_f]Lucia[/name_f]
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] (another favorite)
[name_u]Kirby[/name_u] (he loves this one; I’m not the biggest fan)
[name_f]Serena[/name_f]
[name_f]Sabrina[/name_f]
[name_f]Quinne[/name_f]
Lyanna
[name_u]Teagan[/name_u]
[name_u]Austen[/name_u] (we’re both writers, and love this one…mostly me, lol)
[name_f]Bronte[/name_f] (this one we go back and forth with)
[name_u]Presley[/name_u]
Kooper
[name_u]Monroe[/name_u]
[name_u]Sage[/name_u]
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f]
[name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] (my only grandmother’s middle name - her first name was [name_f]Mary[/name_f] - one I’d also like to include somehow to honor her, but it’s okay if we don’t)

Another solution my husband proposed was to add ‘[name_m]Charles[/name_m]’ to our boy’s name, and give him two middle names. So, instead of [name_u]Jamison[/name_u] [name_m]Thomas[/name_m], it would be [name_u]Jamison[/name_u] [name_m]Charles[/name_m] [name_m]Thomas[/name_m].

What do you think?

I’m open to all different suggestions/names/combos. I love discovering new names, so like I said…I’m up for anything!

I really want to try to figure this out. It’s driving me crazy! Any help would be so greatly appreciated! Thank-you in advance!

I love your [name_f]Kalene[/name_f] /[name_f]Kaylene[/name_f] option - it will also serve to make a more unique name, which you are looking for.
There is also the possibility you could still use nn [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] with it, though I think [name_f]Kaylee[/name_f] would be more intuitive.
[name_f]DO[/name_f] you like [name_f]Kaylee[/name_f] [name_f]Sue[/name_f] better? or [name_f]Kaylee[/name_f] [name_u]Sage[/name_u] [name_f]Sue[/name_f]?

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you like [name_f]Susannah[/name_f]? [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] or [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] [name_f]Charlene[/name_f] would be a little less country. If not I think [name_f]Susan[/name_f] [name_f]Charlene[/name_f] works OK as a middle except for the names that end in -n. Or maybe you will have a boy and can name him [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] and save [name_f]Susan[/name_f] for a future kid.

[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] nn [name_u]Charlie[/name_u]? I also like the idea of adding [name_m]Charles[/name_m] to the boy name. [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] nn [name_f]Cece[/name_f] seems like your style and I think [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] [name_f]Susan[/name_f] is lovely. [name_f]Susan[/name_f] also means lily, so [name_f]Lily[/name_f] could be an option.

I agree with you that [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] [name_f]Sue[/name_f] is not quite right (at least not my style). I do like the idea of [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] nn [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] though! I also didn’t want a name that was too popular, so other names that were on my long list include:

[name_f]Imogen[/name_f]
[name_f]Pearl[/name_f]
[name_f]Maeve[/name_f]
[name_f]Maxine[/name_f]
[name_u]Simone[/name_u]
[name_f]Freya[/name_f]
[name_f]Laina[/name_f]
[name_f]Anya[/name_f]
[name_f]Kaia[/name_f]
[name_f]Bryony[/name_f]
[name_f]Bonnie[/name_f]
[name_f]Florence[/name_f]
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] - Could this work with a [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] nickname?
[name_f]Mara[/name_f]
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u]
[name_f]Effie[/name_f]
[name_f]Athena[/name_f]
[name_f]Thomasin[/name_f]
[name_f]Annette[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f]

Possibly [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] [name_f]Susan[/name_f]? Or from your list I love [name_f]Leonie[/name_f] [name_f]Charlene[/name_f]!

I like the idea of [name_f]Kalene[/name_f] and from your list, [name_f]Luna[/name_f], [name_f]Leonie[/name_f], [name_f]Bronte[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucia[/name_f]. [name_f]Bronte[/name_f] [name_f]Lucia[/name_f], [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Kalene[/name_f] and [name_f]Leonie[/name_f] [name_f]Marcella[/name_f] would be some of my fave picks it you go with an OG name

Some other ideas

[name_f]Lilia[/name_f] - [name_f]Susan[/name_f] means [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] is a bit more unusual that [name_f]Lily[/name_f] and it gives me the same vibes as names like [name_f]Lucia[/name_f], [name_f]Luna[/name_f] and [name_f]Aurora[/name_f]
[name_f]Shoshana[/name_f] ‘[name_u]Charlie[/name_u]’ - might be a stretch at not your style, but [name_f]Shoshana[/name_f] is a variation of [name_f]Susan[/name_f] and it has that [name_f]Shar[/name_f] sound that could make [name_u]Charlie[/name_u]??
Abeline/[name_u]Abilene[/name_u] - same ending as [name_f]Charlene[/name_f] but unique
[name_f]Celene[/name_f] - similar sounds/appearance to [name_f]Cecelia[/name_f] and [name_f]Serena[/name_f] but also honours [name_f]Charlene[/name_f]

My choice would be to name her [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] and call her [name_u]Charlie[/name_u].
