We decided to include a family name in our combinations - it’s a lovely connection and sentimental… but let’s be honest, some names just aren’t that fab… #sigh
We have combinations using our fathers names, but grandfathers are just. No.
Names are: [name_m]Bryan[/name_m], [name_m]Len[/name_m], [name_m]Oswald[/name_m], and [name_m]Basil[/name_m].
So my question is, is there a modern take on these names that isn’t so awful? Or perhaps a derivative or something?
For example, I have two aunt [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f]'s, so we have the name [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] in one of our combinations, coz we don’t like [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] but love the connection. Is there a name lurking out there that could be similar for our grandfathers names…
Also, how similar do you think an honour name needs to be to be an honour name? I tend to think that if you’re honouring some one, you should use the exact name or as close as possible… but maybe I’m boxing myself in too much.
Anyway, keen for discussion and thoughts… I hope that all made sense! Haha
I love [name_m]Basil[/name_m]!! Especially because it sets up well for the nickname [name_u]Bay[/name_u], which I love. [name_m]Oswald[/name_m] ~ [name_m]Ozzie[/name_m]?
I do agree that [name_m]Basil[/name_m] isn’t the worst… just don’t love it. But perhaps it could grow on me.
@claireelisewren I quite like [name_m]Oswin[/name_m] as an option. Thanks.
Also, [name_f]Briar[/name_f] is a good option for honouring my grandfather if we had only girls!
Hmm. I made a few suggestions below, but I also thought about honoring the grandfathers in the names of your girls istead of the boys, so there are boy and girl suggestions.
[name_m]Bryan[/name_m]–[name_m]Bryant[/name_m], [name_u]Ryan[/name_u], [name_m]Byron[/name_m], [name_u]Bryce[/name_u], [name_u]Aubry[/name_u], [name_u]Bryn[/name_u], [name_f]Bryony[/name_f]
[name_m]Len[/name_m]–[name_m]Allen[/name_m], [name_u]Lennox[/name_u], [name_m]Kellen[/name_m], [name_m]Olen[/name_m] ([name_m]Oswald[/name_m] + [name_m]Len[/name_m]), Baylen ([name_m]Basil[/name_m] + [name_m]Len[/name_m]), [name_f]Elena[/name_f] (or any other [name_f]Helen[/name_f]/[name_f]Ellen[/name_f] variant), [name_f]Lena[/name_f], [name_f]Lenore[/name_f], [name_f]Yelena[/name_f]
[name_m]Oswald[/name_m]–Oswyn/[name_m]Oswin[/name_m], [name_f]Rhoswen[/name_f], and what about Aslan as a combination of Os and [name_m]Len[/name_m]?
[name_m]Basil[/name_m]–The Aussies tend to nickname this [name_m]Baz[/name_m], which seems like a really neat nickname (I know a [name_m]Baz[/name_m], from [name_u]Barry[/name_u], he’s great!) [name_f]EDIT[/name_f]: HAH! I just realized you are from Australia. Whoops.
[name_f]Sylvia[/name_f]–[name_m]Sylvan[/name_m], [name_m]Sylvester[/name_m]
Thanks! [name_u]Love[/name_u] the creativity!
Boys and girls variations is super helpful. I should have thought more out of the box!
Hmm. Something about [name_m]Bryon[/name_m] is so much nicer than [name_m]Bryan[/name_m]. Thanks for mentioning it. Definitely useable.
Haha… yeah, all Aussie here, and I have to admit that the reminder about “baz” is enough to put me off the name. So bogan. I’d have to have a strict “no baz” policy if we used [name_m]Basil[/name_m]… sorry, but it makes me cringe.
The [name_m]Baz[/name_m] I know is decidedly not bogan, so, being an American (live in Timor-Leste right now), I didn’t realize how strong the association was! I’d imagine that it’d be really tough being “no [name_m]Baz[/name_m]” with [name_m]Basil[/name_m]! I can’t use my husband’s father’s name ([name_m]Gerard[/name_m], which I love) because I really can’t stand the nickname everyone is likely to use ([name_u]Jerry[/name_u], makes me cringe!) no matter how many times I ask them not to.
Sorry. I wasn’t implying anything about your friend… just expressing how that nickname sounds too me.
If we did use [name_m]Basil[/name_m] it would be a middle (second or third) name, so the likelihood of him getting called [name_m]Baz[/name_m] is probably pretty low.
What about [name_m]Bryson[/name_m]/[name_m]Brycen[/name_m] for [name_m]Brian[/name_m]? I think -son endings are a good way to go for honor names because they literally mean “son of”. I love [name_f]Bryony[/name_f] too, very cute.
[name_m]Basil[/name_m]- [name_m]Vasily[/name_m], [name_f]Vasilia[/name_f], [name_f]Basilia[/name_f]
[name_m]Len[/name_m]- [name_m]Leonard[/name_m], [name_f]Nel[/name_f], Also love [name_f]Lena[/name_f] and [name_u]Lennox[/name_u]
[name_m]Oswald[/name_m]- [name_m]Osvaldo[/name_m] and Ansaldo are interesting international variations. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_m]Walt[/name_m] or [name_m]Walden[/name_m]? Os- was a popular element in old english names, so there are a ton to choose from. I like Osla, [name_m]Osmond[/name_m], [name_m]Oswin[/name_m], and especially [name_m]Osric[/name_m], with has a similar meaning to [name_m]Oswald[/name_m] (god ruler/power). You could also go with God- names which has the same meaning as Os- so [name_m]Godfry[/name_m], Godwin, and Godric.
Funny you should mention [name_m]Osvaldo[/name_m]! Our nephew is [name_m]Osvaldo[/name_m] Basilus… aka. [name_m]Oswald[/name_m] [name_m]Basil[/name_m] in Italian (his dad is Italian). So we wouldn’t use it, but looking at other language variations is definitely a good idea! I think I am leaning towards [name_m]Oswin[/name_m] for [name_m]Oswald[/name_m] at the moment…
[name_u]Lennox[/name_u] is pretty funky… been mentioned a few times. Definitely will consider it. Really liking [name_m]Byron[/name_m] as well.
[name_m]Bryan[/name_m]/[name_m]Brian[/name_m] was a legendary Irish king, [name_m]Saint[/name_m] [name_m]Oswald[/name_m] was also a king, and [name_m]Basil[/name_m] means “king” so maybe a different name with the same meaning?
[name_m]Len[/name_m] is a short form of [name_m]Leonard[/name_m] which means "brave lion.‘’ [name_m]Len[/name_m] also sounds like [name_u]Lynn[/name_u] which means "lake.‘’ You could use a name with the same sound or the meaning of “lion” or a form of [name_m]Len[/name_m] from other languages/cultures: [name_m]Leon[/name_m], [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m], [name_f]Leonida[/name_f], [name_f]Leona[/name_f], Leolin, [name_u]Ari[/name_u], [name_m]Leander[/name_m], [name_m]Leo[/name_m], [name_m]Leopold[/name_m].
