Family names X modern options

[name]Hi[/name]. We are expecting our first born - due Nov 18th.
Last week I had a feeling to add [name]Joseph[/name] (my granddad’s name) to our middle name choice (my husband’s dad).
It would be then, both dearly family names: [name]Joseph[/name] [name]William[/name] .
Does it sound too much, too long? My heart is torn between the honor to both and a short, more modern first name…

Opinions are very welcome.

[name]Joseph[/name] [name]William[/name] is a handsome and meaningful name. However, if you aren’t completely sold on it, then perhaps you should save either [name]Joseph[/name] or [name]William[/name] for a second son.

You might also consider [name]Liam[/name] [name]Joseph[/name].

I think [name]Joseph[/name] [name]William[/name] sounds nice! Very traditional. I even think you could do something like [name]Rex[/name] [name]Joseph[/name] [name]William[/name] or [name]Felix[/name] [name]Joseph[/name] [name]William[/name], but then again, I’m a big proponent of two MNs. Or maybe you could do another [name]Joe[/name] name, like [name]Josiah[/name] [name]William[/name] or [name]Jonas[/name] [name]William[/name]? I think that would still honor both [name]Joseph[/name] and [name]William[/name], while still keeping the combo a bit interesting.

Good luck!

It’s hard to fault a name like [name]Joseph[/name] [name]William[/name]. Simple and traditional but not old fashioned.

I agree that [name]Liam[/name] [name]Joseph[/name] would be a good option as well.

You could also do something that’s a nod to [name]Joseph[/name] without using the exact name. [name]Jonas[/name], [name]Joel[/name], [name]Joshua[/name], [name]Jozef[/name], [name]Jonah[/name]

[name]Joseph[/name] [name]William[/name] sounds very nice, though a bit boring maybe. BUT…I have a thing about honoring beloved family, and I would say [name]DO[/name] IT. Passing on a name is one of the greatest, most lasting ways you can honor someone. If you want to call him something short and trendy, nicknames [name]Joey[/name], JW, [name]Will[/name], [name]Billy[/name], etc. could work. As for the [name]Liam[/name] suggestion, it’s a nice idea, but I feel like [name]Liam[/name] is a COMPLETELY different name than [name]William[/name] (though I know it’s connected) and therefore wouldn’t honor [name]William[/name] at all. I feel like it butchers it.

Thank you all for the comments. I appreciate it a lot!

My husband is set on having [name]William[/name] as the middle name, so I can’t hurt his feelings and not use it…
I will keep brewing in my mind the addition of [name]Joseph[/name] to it.
I particularly loved the idea one of you sent of JW as a nickname, rather than [name]Joe[/name]/[name]Joey[/name]…

  • there are at least 2 Joes, and 1 [name]Josephine[/name] (Joci) in my husband’s family, and I love them all, but it’s not exactly that tradition I intend to follow with [name]Joseph[/name] now: My grandfather was ‘’[name]Jose[/name]’’(from Portugal) which would be pronounced [Hosee’] in the States.
I thought [name]Joseph[/name] would be bilingual and easy.
Maybe I am too worried about pleasing everyone…

Again, thanks for the help!
