Family Names

I really like the idea of naming my children after family members. So I was just wondering what names in your family really stand out to you? Or which makes do you really like within your family?

For example;

Two of my great grandmothers were Annelieseand [name_f]Leonore[/name_f], which I think are quite pretty

Great aunt [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f], which is stunning!!

I also really like my grandmothers names: [name_f]Vera[/name_f] and [name_f]Valerie[/name_f], they’re old fashioned yet to me seem to a certain spunk and edge to them

There’s also a great aunt from the 1880s who’s name was [name_f]Minnie[/name_f] [name_f]Lucrezia[/name_f], which I found so striking

Also, [name_f]Florence[/name_f] and [name_m]Cecil[/name_m] are family names. I’d maybe use [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] or [name_f]Cecily[/name_f] in honour of the [name_m]Cecil[/name_m]’s

Also I think [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f] is the perfect name for an estranged and batty great aunt aha

One of my all-time favourite names is [name_f]Constance[/name_f], and it wasn’t until after I fell in love with it I then found out it was my great-grandmother’s name!

But my favourite sibset has to be my great-great-grandad and his 3 brothers: [name_m]John[/name_m], [name_m]Tom[/name_m], [name_m]Will[/name_m], and…

[name_m]Marmaduke[/name_m].

According to my grandad, he went my Marma.

There are 3 Marmadukes in my family tree! I don’t think I’m brave enough to carry it on though. One of the Marmadukes had a wife called [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] as well

There are some really interesting names in my family tree (but also many very classic names e.g. [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Johanna[/name_f], [name_f]Margarethe[/name_f], etc.) and I’d love to use a few. I currently only have the girls‘ list but here:
[name_f]Apollonia[/name_f]
[name_f]Catalina[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosa[/name_f]
[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f]

[name_f]Appoline[/name_f]
[name_f]Violette[/name_f]
Gerónima
[name_f]Sarafina[/name_f]

I love using honor names, I feel like I get more connected to them, in the way other than just liking the name. I have quiet a few in my lists!

[name_m]Joseph[/name_m] is a long standing boy name on my mother’s side of the family. She has a brother named [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] and an uncle who just passed away about four months ago, maybe even a little less than that. I’ve met him a handful of times, and he always made sure the cousin’s came together, and was so sweet to my pepere, who isn’t biologically related to any of them or my mother and her siblings. [name_m]Paul[/name_m] is my pepere’s name, who even know he’s not related by blood, is the best pepe ever. He’s done so much for my mother, and myself and my siblings and my aunts and cousins and uncles. He’s just a great man, and he loved my grandfather so much. [name_m]Scott[/name_m] is my uncle on my father’s side so that’s a nice little nod to that. My dad told me that [name_m]Scott[/name_m] is a long used name in his father’s family so that made me kind of happy to hear since I didn’t really know my dad’s father. [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] is a slight nod to my father since his name is [name_m]Fred[/name_m]. He never got to pass down the name since my mother had no interest in having a third. [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] is my sister’s middle name, but with a z. It’s also my best friends middle name. So that honors both of them at the same time.

[name_u]Jean[/name_u] is my mother’s middle name, and I’ve always had that in my list ever since I started making lists. [name_f]Kathleen[/name_f] is my aunt’s name, and she has done so much for me, and my siblings and my mother, especially after my mother got divorced to my father. So that’s my nod to her, and honor to her. [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] [name_f]Leona[/name_f] is my new honor name because after my sister passed away, I distracted myself with making an honor name combo for her. I came up with [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] [name_f]Leona[/name_f] because my sister’s initials are SL, so [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] [name_f]Leona[/name_f]- SL. Also, it connects to her because [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] means princess and my sisters name [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] means princess as well. When I was looking at what names mean princess, [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] popped up and I already had [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] on my list, so it just made me like it that much more. So that is my honor to my sister without using her name. [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] is my cousin’s middle name and I really liked it too. It’s not really an honor, just a connection use to me. Elleanora [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] is honoring my grandmother who died when I was five years old. [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] was her first name, so at fifteen I came up with Elleanora. [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] was her middle name as well. I do add [name_f]Allean[/name_f] sometimes to it, but it’s still iffy if i will use it since it’s my ex fiance’s great grandmother’s middle name. But she was/is really important to me.

I love the idea, however I am cursed with boring family names, haha.

The ones I would consider would be [name_m]Geraint[/name_m] (my grandad’s middle name) and both mine and my partner’s father’s names, which are [name_m]Peter[/name_m] and [name_m]Ivo[/name_m] respectively. I also love my [name_f]MIL[/name_f]'s name, [name_f]Lydia[/name_f].

[name_u]Leo[/name_u] is my maternal grandfather’s name as well as my uncle’s so you could say on my mom’s side of the family it has a bit of tradition to do with it.

I had a grandmother (now deceased) named [name_f]Antoinette[/name_f], it’s a bit bulky for my tastes but there are variants that I like and may consider.

[name_f]Conchita[/name_f] was the name of a relative from several (like maybe 3?) generations back. The name [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f] also pops up during this generation and has stuck out to me.

Cătălina (anglicized as Catalina) was the name of a cousin who passed away when she was only 15 so though I’ve always thought of this name as being exceptionally pretty I wouldn’t use it because it might invoke unnecessary grief.

I have a great great aunt that was named [name_f]Frances[/name_f] and always loved this name. It has such class & style to it.

Another family member from about 2 generations back had the unusual name Evanian, originally I thought this was a weird variation of [name_u]Evan[/name_u] and belonged to a man but nope, it’s a girl name and I can see it more now.

On my dad’s side of the family tree there is an [name_m]Angelo[/name_m], maybe I’ll incorporate this as a middle one of these days.

I also remember reading of a many times great aunt named [name_f]Consuelo[/name_f] - another one I consider uncommon.

[name_f]My[/name_f] dad’s middle name is [name_m]Petru[/name_m] (Romanian equivalent of Peter). Speaking of [name_m]Peter[/name_m] equivalents there is also a great grandfather named [name_m]Pietro[/name_m], both names I much prefer to the [name_f]English[/name_f] version and could see myself using either for a boy.

I have a great grandmother who had the name [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] which my parents made into [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] when they decided to use it as an honor name on my little sister.

There is a [name_f]Daniela[/name_f] on my family tree and though not a name I’m interested in using it is kind of attractive.

The more basic names (and by this I mean frequent) I’ve run across in my lineage are [name_u]Maria[/name_u], [name_u]Joseph[/name_u], [name_u]Michael[/name_u], [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], [name_f]Mary[/name_f], & [name_m]Anthony[/name_m]. Less frequently occuring or only once occurring are [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f], [name_m]Miguel[/name_m], [name_f]Rosemarie[/name_f], [name_f]Colleen[/name_f], [name_f]Constance[/name_f], [name_f]Mercè[/name_f], [name_f]Grace[/name_f] & [name_m]Clement[/name_m].
