Family Tree Treasure

I’m finally exploring names from my family tree, thanks to my parents’ new found obsession with genealogy. Here are the ones I’ve picked out that caught my eye (I omitted the scores of [name]Marys[/name], Helens, [name]James[/name], Johns, in favor of the more surprising names). I starred the ones that are already on my list or I may add to it. [name]Just[/name] for fun! Anything interesting to you?

From the Irish settlers side of the family:

[name]Starling[/name]
(I’d use this for a girl, maybe a mn)
[name]Riley[/name] (surname)
[name]Holden[/name] (a surname)*
[name]Lemuel[/name]
[name]Roscoe[/name]
[name]Eli[/name]*
[name]Floyd[/name]

From the Scandinavian + English side:

Boys:
Many [name]Daniels[/name], Johns etc. Sort of standard British settler fare
[name]Leon[/name]
[name]Artemas*[/name]
[name]Hugh[/name]
[name]Iver[/name] - I like the pronunciation (eye-ver), but sadly it technically is (ee-var), which I don’t like

[name]Sylvia[/name]
[name]Sigrid[/name]
[name]Esther[/name]*

[name]Hildegard[/name]
[name]Fern[/name]* - maybe will make the list
[name]Dorcas[/name]

Wow! You have some great names in your family tree! So many of them are usable. I have been thinking of trying to look into mine…how did you go about it, may I ask?

I love digging thru genealogy records and have been doing it for years. You have found some great names. I really like the name [name]Nell[/name] but not sure which MN I would use with it. There’s actually a [name]Nell[/name] in my family tree but she’s [name]Mary[/name] [name]Nell[/name] and did go by both names.

rookachoo - there are some wonderful web-sites that will blow you away when you’re researching family history. So much info! One is www.rootsweb.com and the other is ancestry.com. Ancestry is by subscription but all new users get a 14 free trial before they commit. If you try it you will be hooked.

I found some interesting names in my family while on both sites - Gwenhamra, [name]Judah[/name], Stratton, [name]Thaxter[/name]. …

rookachoo - I was pleasantly surprised too! My parents got into it when they retired. They use ancestry.com and in their spare time go to libraries and gravesites.

saramee - [name]Mary[/name] [name]Nell[/name] is actually the fullname - and she went by both too! I really like the [name]Nell[/name], but it doesn’t work very well with out ln. I don’t know that I’d want to use both, but I have thought about trying to smoosh them into a mn.
