I am a huge, huge fan of the NFL. I don’t suspect there are many others like me here on this board. Yesterday, one of my friends made a joke about me being out of the NFL draft loop because I have been spending so much time on the baby name blogs and boards recently. And I told her that, yeah, the NFL doesn’t really come up too much on NB
Well, yesterday was Round 1 of the NFL draft, and let me tell you, there were some fantastic men with some even more fantastic names drafted from college into the NFL. I was hoping to find some naming inspiration among the NFL class of 2013 for my soon-to-be baby. I joked with my family that I would name my son (if baby is a he) after the [name]Green[/name] [name]Bay[/name] Packers 1st round pick. I was crossing my fingers that it would be a good one, and a good one it was! The newest member of my [name]Packer[/name] team is Datone [name]Jones[/name]. It works wonderfully as the name of an NFL defensive end, but for my little baby, perhaps not…
I wanted to list some of the best names of the 32 players to be drafted in round 1. There are really some good ones, and I know that although most of them are not NB classic names by any means, I did find some of my own personal gems. I am wondering if the moms and dads of these players had NFL hopes for their sons when they named them, because I swear some of these guys were destined, by name alone, to be in the NFL.
I am trying to figure out exactly, but I think Duh-tone. Duh-tone [name]Jones[/name].
I want to figure out the story behind Barkevious. I am sure it’s not just a random name that was pulled out of nowhere. There’s got to be a family or cultural meaning to it.
My favourites are [name]Xavier[/name], [name]Desmond[/name], and [name]Jarvis[/name], plus I also have a soft spot for Bjoern and [name]Dion[/name] (probably because my hockey team’s captain is named [name]Dion[/name]).
Not a fan of [name]Star[/name] on a guy. Cordarrelle sounds kind of feminine to me, and Barkevious is just… wow.
According to Wikipedia: “Mingo is the son of Hugh Mingo and Barbara Johnson. He has two older brothers, Hugh and Hughtavious. His unusual first name was created by his mother, adding the first three letters of her first name to the equally random letters Kevious.”
I wasn’t suggesting that we analyze and judge these names using the same standards one might use when considering a name for their child. They are much different when viewed within the framework of professional athletes in the NFL. Most of these names don’t work on ordinary people, but because NFL players are usually larger-than-life, their names can be, too. These are the kind of men that can literally pull off any name. It’s a small slice of the population that can do it. I just think these are really great and interesting to see. And I think that it was a great stroke of destiny that a kid named Barkevious [name]Mingus[/name] ended up in the NFL because he would have been out of place as manager of Outback Steakhouse or as a CPA for H&R Block.
Using “real world” standards, I really like [name]Desmond[/name] and [name]Dion[/name], too. They are probably my two favorites from the list. I have been lobbying for these names with my BF, but he’s not sold. He isn’t sure if they could fit on a “white kid”. I kind of think a name like [name]Desmond[/name] or [name]Dion[/name] could give a little boy just a little bit of swagger. I’d love to be able to give some swagger to my son through a great name. We’ll see what happens.
Re: Barkevious
Interesting naming technique. I think [name]Hugh[/name] got off easy in that sibset
I try to be consistent with my “high standards” and apply them to every person. I don’t think being a sports star, celebrity or whatever changes anything. [name]How[/name] long does an NFL career last? These guys have to go into the “real world” soon enough, don’t they? People are only “larger-than-life” if we allow them to be. We all have strengths and limitations. We’re human beings who shouldn’t be put on a pedestal. You know what usually happens when we put people on pedestals… they eventually fall off.

I understand what you’re saying. I just happen to have a severe soft spot for the NFL. It’s kind of my thing. There are about 100 other more serious problems with the NFL and the NFL athletes than their names that I should be more concerned with, especially being a woman (and I’m a feminist at that!). It doesn’t make a lot of sense, but football and football players are just a huge interest to me in my world.
I happen to find these names interesting. It isn’t the “real world”. It’s a fantasy world. But these are some serious, intense athletes, and when they are in their top peak condition, they border on machine rather than man. They can pull off seriously intense names. That was just kind of my point. And I thought some other people here may enjoy the name list, especially those who have no interest or care for the NFL. It’s interesting to glimpse a different reality sometimes.
I wish we could talk to whoever named them… I’m sure there are some pretty interesting stories behind some of these names. Very cool… and Go [name]Pats[/name]!
