I thought I would start a father’s day post to talk about names that the men in our life love.
My husband- Big names for boys like [name]Cassius[/name], [name]Ulysses[/name], [name]Zeus[/name]! He doesn’t like simple, plain or classic. His big thing is “Nothing too boring”!
My dad- suggested [name]Gwen[/name] & [name]Angela[/name] when my mom was pregnant with me. [name]Lisa[/name] for my sister. He suggested the same names to me when I was pregnant…along with [name]Kiki[/name]!
My grandfather- liked [name]Yolanda[/name] & [name]Cynthia[/name]. His choices really surprised me! He said “You don’t hear those too often & they have a nice sound to them.”
Actually, all of the guys liked [name]Cynthia[/name]!
The only name my husband is really big on is [name]Harley[/name] for a girl, which is never ever happening. I told him he could name a dog [name]Harley[/name].
My dad actually gave me my name, [name]Lorelei[/name].
my son (my little man) like [name]Duncan[/name] and [name]Louise[/name]
My dh suggested [name]Cynthia[/name] too… I was all like “really?!” But then I realized that he really likes 1980’s names, which is what I associate [name]Cynthia[/name] with. It seems like every other celeb and valley girl tv character in the 80’s had the name [name]Cindy[/name]. He also likes more “princessy” names than I do. Like [name]Gwendolyn[/name] and [name]Anastasia[/name] and [name]Alexandria[/name] and [name]Cassandra[/name] and [name]Guinevere[/name] and [name]Veronica[/name]. The more frilly syllables the better in his book.
My SO loves boyish names for girls. His daughter’s name is [name]Jordan[/name], and he’d pick [name]Cooper[/name] for a second girl if he could get away with it. ([name]Lucky[/name] for any daughter of ours, I won’t let him! ) He thinks they sound sharp, sporty, and attractive. Anything “old” or too “[name]Jane[/name] [name]Austen[/name],” gets a quick, firm rejection from him.
We’re not as far apart on boys’ names, since he goes for classic-y, solid names, names for a guy who can “catch a ball, fix the car, and manage a department.” His son is [name]Nicholas[/name] ([name]Nick[/name]), and he has said he likes [name]Nathaniel[/name] ([name]Nate[/name]), [name]Adam[/name], [name]Luke[/name], [name]Thomas[/name], [name]Sam[/name]/[name]Samuel[/name], and [name]Max[/name].
My grandfather likes to joke that he suggested one name and one name only for each of his four kids… [name]Percival[/name] [name]Sylvester[/name]. Which he actually did, but only because with their three-syllable-ends-in-ER last name it was a major tongue twister. He ended up with a [name]Steven[/name], [name]Lynn[/name], [name]Carol[/name], and [name]Peter[/name].
I don’t think my dad really cared what his kids ended up named but I know he pushed for [name]Patrick[/name] for me had I been a boy and actually is the reason I am named what I am, my first name anyway. His other kids ended up with the names [name]Cathryn[/name], [name]Jonathan[/name], and [name]Regina[/name] but they are all older and from a different mother. My name is a variant of [name]Cathryn[/name] so it’s a good thing we didn’t both settle on the same nickname.
My partner is generally VERY traditional with girls names, if it was up to him we’d have a [name]Amelia[/name] [name]Rose[/name], [name]Ava[/name] [name]Rose[/name], [name]Isabella[/name] [name]Rose[/name] - all lovely names, but a bit boring to me. And I’ve no idea what i is with him and the middle name ‘[name]Rose[/name]’, but automatically goes on every name suggestion.
He has only ever seriously suggested one boys name and that’s the one our eldest have. He did suggest [name]Massimo[/name] too, but I’m not sure how serious that was
My hubby still thinks that [name]Danger[/name] would be a great middle name for a boy. I don’t know if I’d let him use it, but [name]Solomon[/name] [name]Danger[/name] kinda has a nice ring to it!
I love this! Maybe [name]Cynthia[/name] is the ultimate “guy name”! I’ve heard [name]Veronica[/name] from the men in my life too. [name]Both[/name] names feel a little glam, a little 80s, a little high maintenance…
My dad endlessly suggests [name]Lee[/name] (which is his middle name) but hates anything longer like [name]Leonardo[/name]. Needless to say, I didn’t go for it.
[name]Dominic[/name]'s favorite name at the moment is [name]Mordecai[/name]. =]
My SO likes short, “rough and tumble” names for boys, and the exact opposite of that for girls, although he still prefers boyish nn’s for girl’s.
The names he has laid on the table:
[name]Briggs[/name]- I think this is subconsiously because of the company [name]Briggs[/name] and Stratton.
[name]Colt[/name]- He’s a cowboy and it reminds him of horses and guns. Plain and simple.
[name]Kick[/name]- This is actually one that I brought up, but he likes it because of the tough, sporty connotation.
[name]Michael[/name]- He says he has liked it since he was little.
[name]Penelope[/name]- He loves this name so much, I swear, he has tried to rename me [name]Penelope[/name]. While I prefer the nn [name]Poppy[/name], he is adamant that the nn is [name]Penn[/name].
[name]Magnolia[/name]- We both love this one. Super girly, in my book. I like the nn’s [name]Mila[/name], he likes [name]Mags[/name] or [name]Maggie[/name].
[name]Brooklyn[/name]- He just likes the way it sounds.
[name]Sophia[/name]- Same as with [name]Brooklyn[/name]…both of which are too trendy sounding for me.
My DH and I have similar tastes. He was the one who suggested our current daughters middle name ([name]Hero[/name]). His faves for a boy are [name]Alaric[/name], [name]Fox[/name] (+ the combo [name]Alaric[/name] [name]Fox[/name]), [name]Leander[/name], [name]Eben[/name], Ames, [name]Job[/name], [name]Dean[/name], [name]Marcus[/name] & [name]Atlas[/name]. For girls he likes [name]Althea[/name], [name]Cosima[/name], [name]Persephone[/name], [name]Gemma[/name], [name]Freja[/name], [name]Jasmine[/name] & [name]Isadora[/name].
My dad is more into name meanings then the actual sound of the name, I think. He gave me my name, [name]Erica[/name], because he “always liked the sound & meaning of it.” My mom is the one who came up with the yooneek spelling - [name]Erykah[/name]. He named my other two siblings, [name]Simone[/name] & [name]Liam[/name], and if he had another two more children he’d name them [name]Jasmine[/name] & [name]Evan[/name]. Nms but still cool.
My husband LOVES [name]Job[/name], too. In fact, that’s what we’re naming our little boy due 11/4/13! A name with a story of strength behind it. I like [name]Alaric[/name] as well. Nice, strong sound to it.
This thread is so interesting! I cannot even get my DH to talk about names with me, yet. I think that with his first three children, he let their mothers pick their names entirely. My father’s only rule for naming my siblings and I was: [name]Don[/name]'t make it any longer than it needs to be. So, there is [name]Ruth[/name], [name]Wyatt[/name], and [name]Cora[/name] (me).
[name]Every[/name] guy I’ve ever met loves [name]Charlie[/name] for a girl! When my sister was expecting, my brother in law and dad were both pushing very hard for [name]Charlie[/name] if she had girl. Personally, I can not stand that name!
My husband likes:
Girls names to be artsy word names. [name]Raven[/name], [name]Luna[/name], [name]Indigo[/name], [name]Winter[/name], [name]Marigold[/name], [name]Saffron[/name], [name]Briar[/name]. The un-word names that get consideration are generally gothic and elaborate: [name]Annabel[/name], [name]Lucasta[/name], or Gaelic like [name]Saoirse[/name] and [name]Siobhan[/name]. He adores [name]Siobhan[/name] and I don’t know why.
He really wants girls. For boys names it’s mostly staid and traditional - [name]Aidan[/name], [name]Isaac[/name], [name]Emmett[/name], [name]Sebastian[/name], [name]Jonathan[/name], [name]Owen[/name]. I don’t hate all his boys OR all his girls but the two sets don’t combine at all!
My dad likes [name]Naomi[/name], which I can’t use, but do like. He mostly suggests names to be funny rather than actually expecting or even wanting us to use them. Last one was Impala, as in the Chevrolet.
Some of my husband’s favorites are [name]Agatha[/name], [name]Elizabeth[/name], [name]Lydia[/name], & [name]Lyra[/name]. For boys he likes [name]James[/name], [name]Thomas[/name], [name]Fox[/name], [name]Benjamin[/name], [name]Henry[/name], & [name]William[/name]. I actually like most of the names that he loves, but I find most of them a bit too boring to actually use.
