I don’t know how many of you have read this [name_m]Young[/name_m] Adult fiction book but its a good one! I just saw they are making it into a movie. The lead character’s name is [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]. [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] has been our top baby girl name for a long time now-- a family name we almost used for our daughter a few years ago but went with something else. I see it mentioned on here so frequently and I am hearing it all the time in my city. Now, I see this movie is being made and I feel like it will spike in popularity even more after it is released. I think all these things combined, I just need to let go of the name. I know some of you dislike it on here but it is a name that most people I tell it too, love, so maybe it is becoming popular for that reason, its a pretty name. It has all the qualities I want in a name:( I am sad to let it go but I think it is time. 3 more weeks to go and I will have to chose a name!
I love the name Hazel, but yes I have been thinking that it will soon be quite popular, particularly like you said, because of the success of the book/movie, and also because it is already gaining really fast.
Try finding name stats for your particular area, to see how often you would actually hear it where you live.
If you still really want to use it, just think which option you would end up regretting more: giving your daughter a commonly used name, or not using your favourite name.
I think it depends on whether the name being popular will make you like it less. If it does spike in popularity (and i think you’re right, i think we’ll see a spike) you don’t want to use a name you’ll hate in a few years from hearing it too often. But if you will love it either way, I’d say to use the name you love.
That’s the thing Mflannery, it was 70/100 in my city last year, 48 girls were named [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]. And I keep hearing it everywhere I go. I live in a trendy city. While none of my friends or family members have uses it, my friends here in [name_m]Portland[/name_m] know one or two. I think it will bother me, it already does and I haven’t chosen her name:) I do wonder how much of an effect the movie will have on the name. No way of knowing. It’s a bummer, I may regret not using it but I don’t want my daughter to have a really popular name or one that sounds trendy:( thanks!
Hmmm, I’m of two minds. Personally, I don’t know any young Hazels, but [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] has been consistently rising up the charts in the US over the past 10 years, so it will likely become more popular. I can’t see it going down soon. If you want your daughter not to know anyone with the same name, you may have to let go of it.
In terms of the movie, though, it’s so hard to predict whether a movie will kick up a name’s popularity. The book is popular on book blogs, but that doesn’t mean it’s well-known in the general public. (I’d never heard of it until I started following book blogs.) While the book was great, and the film may be great too, I don’t see it being another Twilight in terms of influence. I can see more people hearing the name [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] and growing to like it, but I wouldn’t predict see the film itself catapaulting [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] into the top 10. Of course, I could be totally off in my predictions.
BTW, I love the name [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], so I sympathize with your plight!
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] is a beautiful name that’s gaining popularity for sure. I noticed a huge spike after the movie Dolphin Tale, too (in which the girl supporting character is named [name_f]Hazel[/name_f].) Z is such a great letter. That hard A is hard to come by. And it’s unique in that it ends in “el.” All around, a name with lots of spunk and style.
I’m a popularity-phobe, too, so I feel your pain.
We all know what Twilight did to [name_f]Isabella[/name_f]
That said, I’ve not heard of this book, so I doubt it’s at those levels.
I remember being worried [name_f]Annabeth[/name_f] would spike after [name_u]Percy[/name_u] [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] got made into a movie, but I don’t think anything changed, really.
In my high school almost every single girl has read “A Fault in our Stars.” [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_u]Green[/name_u] is a huge thing among high schoolers, so I think that in ten years [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] will explode in popularity when people my age start having kids. Sorry
Yeah, the combination of it being super popular in my city and the fact that is it gaining popularity in general makes me not want to use it regardless. It is starting to sound trendy to me now and its losing its appeal. I may regret it but I think its the right decision to move on from it, family name or not. Bummer but better to realize this now!
