Favorite Childhood Names

After reading through the ‘Demographics’ discussion, it seems that many of us here were simply born with a natural love for names. So, pulling inspiration from that thread, what are some names that you’ve loved over the years? Names that you remember giving your baby dolls or barbies…or chose for yourself when playing house. Or, a little older, names you began to day dream you’d give to your children as an adolescent or teenager? High School, College years?

Have you found that your ‘style’ has changed over the years, or stayed pretty consistent? Did it go with the trends? Where did you pull inspiration from?

Are there are names on your current list that you’ve brought along with you all these years? Maybe a special name that you’ve never gotten over?

I think that my naming style has definitely changed over the years. When I was in Middle School I wanted to name my future daughter, [name_u]Alexis[/name_u]. I still think that [name_u]Alexis[/name_u] is okay…but I don’t think that I would ever use it for one of my children. Growing up I had a doll, which I named [name_f]Joan[/name_f].

When I was in High School I liked [name_f]Julianna[/name_f], [name_f]Veronica[/name_f], and [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]. [name_f]Julianna[/name_f] and [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] are both names that I dislike, now. Which brings me to your last question; I will never get over the name [name_f]Veronica[/name_f]. I think it’s just so beautiful and edgy. The only reason why I haven’t used it is because, my husband isn’t really a fan of it. But I think he’s coming around to like it.

  1. Have you found that your ‘style’ has changed over the years, or stayed pretty consistent? Did it go with the trends? Where did you pull inspiration from?

My style has gone from Toddlers & Tiaras worthy names to unusual/unheard of names, to underused classics, so it’s definitely changed. I never used to follow trends when I was younger, the trend following for me is fairly recent, I only started that about a year ago. I get my inspiration now from cemeteries and historic references/books, but as a child, a lot of it was influenced by television and American Girl dolls.

  1. Are there are names on your current list that you’ve brought along with you all these years? Maybe a special name that you’ve never gotten over?

This only truly happened with boy names for me

[name_m]Adam[/name_m]
[name_m]Thomas[/name_m]
[name_m]William[/name_m]
[name_m]Andrew[/name_m]
[name_m]Joshua[/name_m]

I have always liked [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] as well though

I’ve loved [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f] and [name_f]Lola[/name_f] for years.
When I was even younger some names I liked were:
[name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] and [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] (too biblical)
[name_f]Mira[/name_f] (still like, actually, but slightly prefer [name_f]Mara[/name_f] or [name_f]Marina[/name_f])
[name_f]Mia[/name_f] (too popular)
[name_f]Sapphire[/name_f]/[name_f]Sapphira[/name_f] (still sort of like, not so much though)
[name_f]Miranda[/name_f] (still like, but I prefer other M names i.e. [name_f]Mira[/name_f], [name_f]Mara[/name_f], [name_f]Mirabel[/name_f]/[name_f]Mirabella[/name_f], [name_f]Mazarine[/name_f], [name_f]Marceline[/name_f], [name_f]Marjorie[/name_f], [name_f]Margaux[/name_f], [name_f]Martine[/name_f]/[name_f]Martina[/name_f], [name_f]Mallory[/name_f])
[name_u]Carson[/name_u] (b/c it rhymed with the phrase “our son”. I thought I was being creative…)
Yeah, I really liked (and still like) M names.

My favourite [name_f]Barbie[/name_f] was [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] (almost a decade before twilight, I’m proud). The others are [name_u]Christy[/name_u], [name_f]Susan[/name_f], and… I forgot.
When I was in elementary school, I remember loving: [name_f]Jessica[/name_f], [name_f]Florence[/name_f], [name_f]Veronica[/name_f], [name_f]Virginia[/name_f], [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f], [name_f]Violetta[/name_f] (huge chrush on V names, I know), [name_f]Julietta[/name_f].

High school years: Pretty close to my current list.
College years: I’m currently still in uni.

“Half” of my style is pretty consistent, I think. But now I prefer to stay away from mega popular names, try out more obscure names, and am having many mythological names on my list.

Some names I can remember using when I was litle:
[name_f]Amaris[/name_f] - For some reason I was obsessed with this name
[name_u]Elias[/name_u] - I loved this for a girl… in 3rd grade we had to write a journal like we were a pilgrim on the Mayflower and I named myself [name_u]Elias[/name_u].
[name_m]Kenneth[/name_m] - All of my boy barbies were always named [name_m]Kenneth[/name_m]. I have no idea why.
[name_m]Madden[/name_m] - This was my favorite boy name for a long time. Not a fan now.

My tastes have definitely changed. The only names that I’ve had on my list almost always are [name_f]Noelle[/name_f] and [name_f]Willow[/name_f] which are our top choices for girls. I’m not sure where I really got most of my name inspiration from… I get it from all kinds of places.

You all have amazing memories! The only ones I can remember is liking [name_m]Torian[/name_m] and [name_f]Morgana[/name_f] for a sib-set when I was in high school (yes, I went to a magical/goth phase). My daughter [name_f]Gigi[/name_f] who is five, loves the name [name_f]Marissa[/name_f]. Almost all of her dolls end up with [name_f]Marissa[/name_f] at some point in the name. Which is funny because her brother was almost [name_f]Marissa[/name_f] and none of my family liked it, then of course he was a boy and [name_m]Eli[/name_m] was it!

My dolls and teddy bears (that I remember!) were called [name_u]Sam[/name_u], [name_m]George[/name_m], [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] and [name_m]David[/name_m].
When I was in high school I loved [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] (for a girl) [name_f]Ariella[/name_f], [name_u]Arya[/name_u], [name_u]Chase[/name_u], [name_u]Riley[/name_u], [name_m]William[/name_m] and [name_u]Casey[/name_u]. The only ones I love still are [name_u]Arya[/name_u] and [name_m]William[/name_m]. My favourites now are [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Margot[/name_f] and [name_u]Seth[/name_u].

I can remember naming my dolls [name_u]Clare[/name_u], [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Maia[/name_f] (except I think I would of spelt in [name_f]Mya[/name_f]), [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f], [name_f]Jacqueline[/name_f], [name_f]Valerie[/name_f], [name_f]Brittany[/name_f] and [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f].
I had soft toys named [name_u]Alfie[/name_u], [name_f]Florence[/name_f] and [name_m]Ned[/name_m], though I don’t think I’m entirely responsible for those names.

I recently found a list from when I was about 12, which is about three years ago (I kept lists before them I just don’t know what happened to them) and quite a few of the names have changed.

[name_f]Arianna[/name_f]
[name_f]Arabella[/name_f]
[name_f]Bethany[/name_f]
[name_f]Cynthia[/name_f]
[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]
[name_f]Janet[/name_f]
[name_f]Isadora[/name_f]
[name_f]Lillian[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosalia[/name_f]
[name_f]Sarita[/name_f]
[name_f]Tabitha[/name_f]
[name_f]Verity[/name_f]

[name_m]Christopher[/name_m]
[name_u]Dylan[/name_u]
[name_m]Jonathan[/name_m]
[name_m]Edric[/name_m]
[name_m]Patrick[/name_m]
[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]

All those names were on my list and now seem to me to be a mixture of over the top, dated or boring. However some of my favourite names were also on the same list, such as…

[name_u]James[/name_u]
[name_m]Simon[/name_m]
[name_m]William[/name_m]
[name_u]Seth[/name_u]

[name_f]Abigail[/name_f]
[name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f]
[name_f]Perrine[/name_f]
[name_f]Ruth[/name_f]
[name_f]Gwen[/name_f]

I guess since I’m still young my taste is still constantly changing, but there are still a few names that I have loved since I was very little and would still consider using if I ever had kids such as [name_m]William[/name_m], [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] or [name_f]Gwen[/name_f].

The name I was absolutely obsessed with as a child (around 10-11) was Reighn. I even fantasized about calling it out at a gymnastics class and all the other moms turning their heads in awe at my amazing naming abilities. Oh the imagination of a child! I have countless notebooks full of stories about Reighn.

I also remember feeling so guilty about wanting to name a son [name_u]Aiden[/name_u] but spell it [name_m]Aaden[/name_m]. I thought “I can’t be one of them!” Lol!

I then moved on to [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and [name_m]Jack[/name_m]. My love for them has never faded, although they are on a long list now.

And then I found a forum much like nameberry and my tastes took a sharp turn into full name nerd territory. I remember [name_f]Poet[/name_f] [name_f]Antigone[/name_f] Fairaday and [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Galatea[/name_f] [name_f]Primrose[/name_f]. I also loved [name_m]Galileo[/name_m], although sadly I don’t remember his combo. At this time I spent hours researching and making lists of names and meaning from all different cultures.

I was around 16 when I stopped looking up names. It wasn’t until this year (I’m 21 now) when my niece was born that I found nameberry and things have resumed. I now only have names I would actually use on my short list. Of course I still have all those guilty pleasures on the side!

I’ve got a few categories:

Names I loved as a kid that I still love now:
Girls - [name_f]Hannah[/name_f], [name_f]Claire[/name_f], [name_f]Molly[/name_f], [name_f]Caitlin[/name_f], [name_f]Kayla[/name_f], [name_f]Ramona[/name_f], [name_f]Esmeralda[/name_f], [name_f]Katharine[/name_f], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. Nicknames like [name_f]Kitty[/name_f]/[name_f]Katie[/name_f], [name_f]Susie[/name_f]. I always liked [name_f]Mae[/name_f]/[name_f]May[/name_f] and [name_u]Lee[/name_u] as middle names, and I still do.
Boys - [name_m]Levi[/name_m], [name_u]Ari[/name_u], [name_m]Asher[/name_m], [name_m]Patrick[/name_m], [name_u]Jesse[/name_u], [name_m]Ezra[/name_m], [name_m]Raphael[/name_m], [name_u]Owen[/name_u], [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m], [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m].

Husband has vetoed almost all of them.

Names I loved as a kid I do NOT like now:
Girls: [name_f]Amethyst[/name_f], [name_f]Tamika[/name_f], Lazuli, [name_f]Bethany[/name_f], [name_f]Beth[/name_f]. (I still liked [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] throughout, but as a kid I loved [name_f]Beth[/name_f] and hated [name_f]Libby[/name_f]/[name_f]Lizzie[/name_f], I have flipped on that completely) aaand the use of [name_u]Lynn[/name_u] as a middle name. When I was VERY little I thought [name_f]Karen[/name_f] was quite glamorous, and that is why I named my favourite [name_f]Barbie[/name_f] [name_f]Karen[/name_f].
Boys: [name_m]Jacob[/name_m] NN [name_m]Jake[/name_m], [name_u]Tyler[/name_u], [name_m]Daniel[/name_m], [name_u]Hunter[/name_u], [name_m]Houston[/name_m], [name_m]Harrison[/name_m].

Georgia[/name_f]]My very first “favorite name” was [name_f]Denise[/name_f]. I have absolutely no idea where I first heard it, but I clearly remember talking about it non-stop. I was about five or so.

Not long after that, I watched the movie Losing [name_m]Isaiah[/name_m] and instantly fell head over heels for the name [name_f]Hannah[/name_f]. Although I would not use it for my child now, there will always be a special place in my heart for [name_f]Hannah[/name_f]. A few other names I loved between the ages of 6 and 13:[ul]

Right around thirteen years old, I discovered the name [name_f]Ava[/name_f]. I loved that it was short, simple and beautiful. It was relatively uncommon at that time, and I adored that it meant “like a bird”. [name_f]Ava[/name_f] remained my favorite name through High School, and was what I named my ‘Real Life [name_u]Baby[/name_u]’ project for Home Ec my [name_m]Junior[/name_m] year ([name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Noelle[/name_f]). It wasn’t until it’s overwhelming popularity became apparent to me that I finally let it go. I still think it’s a beautiful name.

I had the same love affair with the name [name_m]Gavin[/name_m] for a boy, during the same time frame, and with the same sad ending. Other names I loved from 13-20…

I still like virtually all of those names (Alexavier, though?! Really?), with both [name_m]Ramsay[/name_m] and [name_m]Eamon[/name_m] surviving to still be included on my current list. [name_u]Reagan[/name_u] is very close to being included again as well.

My current top names, Macsen and [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], have been topping my list for about 4 or 5 years now.

I liked [name_f]Athena[/name_f] a lot. I always named my favourite [name_f]Barbie[/name_f]-doll that. And [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]. I remember hearing the name in English and loving the pronunciation of it (it’s pronounced much differently in Danish). I also liked [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] a lot. And [name_m]Louis[/name_m] (I still love that one).

I’ve only recently started embracing my love for names, I love the meanings and origins they carry with them and how name trends are forever changing. I never named my stuffed toys anything and never played with dolls, I was quite a tomboy. But I remember hating my name a lot when I was younger, all my friends had soft flowing names of [name_f]Ria[/name_f], [name_f]Victoria[/name_f], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] and [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f].

When I was younger I liked names that belonged on Charmed and members of S Club, I thought [name_f]Hannah[/name_f], [name_f]Tina[/name_f], [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f], [name_u]Piper[/name_u] and [name_u]Bradley[/name_u] were the coolest. When I reached Secondary/High School I liked names from books and movies a lot more, [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f] from Coronation St and the Incredibles. Not all names that reflected the trends at then time just names that I didn’t hear on anyone in my everyday life.

[name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] and [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] are still on my list, I never stopped loving [name_f]Violet[/name_f] the only think that has wavered the name is that my bf likes the name as it is close to Violent. I had to say goodbye to [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] after my cousin used the name, [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] and [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] remain and will always stay as a furture choice as they are lovely names that hold memories of an old friend and fun times in school where we would play Charmed at break time, I always wanted to be [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f].

My list for boy names has remained the same, my first son will have the nn [name_m]Ted[/name_m] after my Grandfather and my second [name_m]Charles[/name_m] as a mn for my other Grandad. Only the trendy names of H, [name_u]Bradley[/name_u] and [name_u]Robbie[/name_u] ([name_m]Williams[/name_m]) have left that list.

I’ve loved the name [name_f]Talullah[/name_f] for as long as I can remember.

I’ve always been a fan of [name_m]Jack[/name_m], [name_m]Joshua[/name_m] and [name_f]Emily[/name_f], but I wouldn’t use them as they are too popular.

When I was a young teen I loved the names [name_f]Brenna[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f], [name_u]Darcy[/name_u]-[name_f]Rose[/name_f] and Dolcie-[name_f]May[/name_f]! The only one I still like now is [name_f]Brenna[/name_f].

Other names I remember liking when I was younger but DISLIKE now - [name_f]Paige[/name_f], [name_f]Amber[/name_f], [name_f]Anastasia[/name_f], [name_f]Yasmin[/name_f], [name_m]Jacoby[/name_m], [name_m]Coby[/name_m], [name_u]Corey[/name_u] and [name_u]Cameron[/name_u].

Over the years my style in names has changed as far as names I like at the time, but my all time favourites stay consistent.
When my friend and I were little and would play spies or some other game she was always [name_f]Chloe[/name_f] and I was [name_f]Zoe[/name_f]. Obviously as kids we loved that they rhymed, but I also really loved the name [name_f]Zoe[/name_f] and still do!
My first name I remember wanting to name a future child is [name_f]Susanna[/name_f] nn Suz. I still love the name, but don’t have the most positive connotations for it anymore. This was around early elementary.
[name_u]Ever[/name_u] since I was around 8 I have loved [name_f]Nora[/name_f], and still do.
All through high school I continued to love the name [name_f]Nora[/name_f].
And now my current favourites I have loved for around 3 years, and I just keep loving them more and more!
My style for names I [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] stays mostly classic, while my names of the moment are usually more trendy.

I have always loved “[name_f]Rose[/name_f]” and “[name_f]Rosaline[/name_f]” and tried to name my sister “[name_f]Rosie[/name_f]” when she was born (I was 4 at the time), she ended up with the much more beautiful “[name_f]Gemma[/name_f]” instead. I still love [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. Hehe.

Names that I’ve loved since i could read:

  • [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] (one of my favourite dolls is named [name_f]Juliet[/name_f])
  • [name_m]Jack[/name_m] & [name_f]Sally[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Belle[/name_f], [name_f]Jasmine[/name_f], [name_f]Snow[/name_f], [name_m]Eric[/name_m], Megara… Basically anything from Disney…
  • [name_m]Westley[/name_m]
  • Artimus, [name_f]Holly[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Serena[/name_f], [name_f]Luna[/name_f] & [name_u]Darien[/name_u] from [name_u]Sailor[/name_u] [name_f]Moon[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Miranda[/name_f]

Names that I used to love, but would never name a child now…

  • [name_f]Minerva[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Buttercup[/name_f] (what was i thinking?)
  • [name_f]Buffy[/name_f] (yeah ok, I needed to get away from tv)…
  • [name_f]Prudence[/name_f] (again…)
  • [name_m]Othello[/name_m], bianca, ophelia, cordelia, [name_f]Hermia[/name_f], [name_f]Katharine[/name_f]… Basically anything from [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m]… I thought they were the best names ever, and now I realize that nearly any of them would be wearable in the playground… Whoops

Names that I grew out of for no particular reason other than time:

  • [name_m]Leo[/name_m]
  • [name_m]Curt[/name_m]
  • [name_f]Gabriella[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Harriet[/name_f]
  • [name_m]Isaac[/name_m]

Other dolls & teddies:

  • [name_u]Scottie[/name_u]
  • [name_f]Jasmine[/name_f]
  • Ashela
  • [name_m]Marshall[/name_m]
  • [name_u]Georgie[/name_u]
  • [name_m]Timmy[/name_m]
  • [name_m]Basil[/name_m]

I’m not as far-out with my names now… I think… I hope…

I had baby dolls named [name_f]Eva[/name_f] and [name_u]Lisa[/name_u] and I remember my friends and I always using floral or gem names for ourselves and our barbies when we played together.
I also liked [name_f]Maria[/name_f], [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucia[/name_f]. And I still like all of those names, except maybe not [name_u]Lisa[/name_u] and some of the gems so much…
Then when I was 10-15 I remember liking [name_m]Daniel[/name_m], [name_u]Michael[/name_u], [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] and [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] for boys and for girls I was all into [name_m]French[/name_m] names like [name_f]Veronique[/name_f], [name_f]Corinne[/name_f], [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f], [name_f]Violette[/name_f], [name_f]Yvette[/name_f], Francoise, [name_f]Leonie[/name_f], [name_f]Nathalie[/name_f], [name_f]Virgine[/name_f], [name_f]Sabine[/name_f], [name_f]Nadine[/name_f] and pretty much anything in our [name_m]French[/name_m] books, I also loved [name_u]Claude[/name_u] for a boy. Other favourites included: [name_f]Flavia[/name_f], [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], Dunia, [name_f]Rachel[/name_f], [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], [name_f]Elena[/name_f], [name_f]Jamilla[/name_f], Glennya, [name_f]Violetta[/name_f], [name_f]Lida[/name_f], [name_f]Gemma[/name_f], [name_f]Alya[/name_f], [name_f]Arianna[/name_f], [name_f]Miriam[/name_f], [name_f]Agnes[/name_f].
Some of the names that have held the spot of my favourites from age15 to 20 are: [name_f]Astera[/name_f], Medya, [name_u]Colombe[/name_u], [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f], [name_f]Coraline[/name_f], [name_f]Amira[/name_f], [name_f]Savannah[/name_f], [name_f]Eliana[/name_f], Rosilda, [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Helena[/name_f], [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f], [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f], [name_f]Margot[/name_f], [name_f]Olive[/name_f], [name_f]Verity[/name_f], [name_f]Keziah[/name_f], [name_f]Claudia[/name_f], [name_f]Isadora[/name_f], [name_f]Isolde[/name_f], [name_f]Esme[/name_f], [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] etc. for girls and [name_u]Elliott[/name_u], [name_m]Leopold[/name_m], [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], [name_m]Caspian[/name_m], [name_m]Caspar[/name_m], [name_u]Seth[/name_u], [name_m]Linus[/name_m], [name_m]Marcus[/name_m], [name_m]Nicodemus[/name_m], [name_m]Isidore[/name_m], [name_m]Casimir[/name_m], [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], [name_m]Gavin[/name_m], wilfred, [name_m]Milo[/name_m], [name_m]Nemo[/name_m] etc.

[name_m]Leopold[/name_m]
