Favorite nickname for classic Elizabeth!

Aww, [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]…the little black dress of names! I have loved this name my entire life, it’s a family name but not too close to where I can’t use it as a full name. Hubby is set on having a nickname though so I need your help! First DD is [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] nn [name_f]Fifi[/name_f]. Her nn is only a family ‘pet name’ so no one else calls her this…just her daddy and I mostly. We want the same type of nn for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. I want to avoid [name_f]Lizzy[/name_f]…it’s ok, just not my style and so expected. She isn’t even here yet and people already want to call her [name_f]Lizzy[/name_f]. :-/ I like [name_f]Essie[/name_f]…I started calling [name_f]Bessie[/name_f] and it ran into [name_f]Essie[/name_f]. Also , I was calling her Bethy and that ran into [name_f]Effy[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Essie[/name_f] and [name_f]Effy[/name_f] are more what we are looking for…sweet, vintage feeling family pet name. Others in the family have picked up on [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]'s nn and call her [name_f]Fifi[/name_f], but like I said…she is not known for it outside of family. The same will be for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. We will always use her full name, but want a sweet nn to complement her sisters. What are your thoughts of [name_f]Essie[/name_f] and [name_f]Effy[/name_f]? They feel natural to me but I look at names different that most of my family! Lol! Thanks!

[name_f]Essie[/name_f] and [name_f]Effy[/name_f] are very cute. I prefer [name_f]Essie[/name_f] in general and also because it sounds more related to [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. [name_f]Effy[/name_f] is a bit more of a stretch and is too close to [name_f]Fifi[/name_f] for me. I do love [name_f]Beth[/name_f], but just [name_f]Beth[/name_f]. Bethy, although adorable in writing, to me sounds like someone with a lisp saying [name_f]Bessie[/name_f]. Have you ever thought about [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] or [name_f]Libby[/name_f]? I love [name_f]Libby[/name_f] and think it has the same sweet cuteness as [name_f]Fifi[/name_f] does.

[name_m]How[/name_m] about sweet [name_f]Bess[/name_f]? Or [name_f]Bessie[/name_f]?

I love [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], but with this spelling [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f]. The nn I’ll use if I have an [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] is [name_f]ELSIE[/name_f]. I love it.

I like [name_f]Essie[/name_f]. Very cute pet name! Not so fond of [name_f]Effy[/name_f]. Mostly because every time I say it outloud I hear iffy. As in, I feel iffy (undecided) about ordering dessert.

[name_f]Essy[/name_f] is very cute- I really love it! My favorite nn’s for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] are [name_f]Libby[/name_f] and [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]?

I like [name_f]Essie[/name_f]! It’s cute and sort of vintage-y, and more unique than some of the others. I think [name_f]Bess[/name_f] and [name_f]Beth[/name_f] are both sweet. I like [name_f]Libby[/name_f], too. My great-great-grandma was named [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] (that was her full name), but I think it’s would be a great nickname for [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f]. I feel like [name_f]Effie[/name_f] would be a more intuitive nickname for something else.

Thanks everyone for your input! I also like [name_f]Essie[/name_f] a tad more than [name_f]Effy[/name_f]…it feels more natural to me too. [name_f]Bessie[/name_f]/[name_f]Essie[/name_f] [name_f]Elsie[/name_f]/[name_f]Essie[/name_f] [name_f]Beth[/name_f]/Ess…I wish I liked [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] and that’s a great suggestion but I just don’t care for it. Although I love [name_f]Ella[/name_f]! I also love [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]…but people look at me like I have two heads when I mention it! I’m from the south and it’s a common nn for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] I always heard growing up. But now I’m further up north and it unheard of.

I love the nickname [name_f]Effy[/name_f], it’s the name of my favorite character from one of my favorite tv shows. [name_f]Elly[/name_f] could also be a nickname for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f].

[name_f]Elsie[/name_f] and [name_f]Libby[/name_f] are my favs.

My favorite nickname for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is [name_f]Betty[/name_f]. I love it so much, it’s just so spunky. I would love to meet a little [name_f]Betty[/name_f], and even more so have one running around.

and [name_f]Libby[/name_f]!

is the best!

Nicknames are nicknames, so don’t let others’ reactions to [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] slow you down!

[name_f]Elsbeth[/name_f] and [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] and [name_f]Betsy[/name_f] too.

My favorite nickname for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is [name_f]Libby[/name_f]. I think it’s cute and could work on someone of any age. Of the ones you have listed, I like [name_f]Essie[/name_f].

I’m glad someone likes [name_f]Birdie[/name_f]!! Hubby likes it too…I just don’t want people to this I’ve flipped my lid. Lol! [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] nn [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] is my fav…I just love it! My sweet baby bird!

Nicknames are exactly that-- little sweet nothings that signify endearment. They absolutely do not need any relationship whatsoever to the child’s given name. In fact whenever I see overly contrived nicknames or crazy attempts to justify a pet name as a derivation of a formal name I roll my eyes a bit as it seems completely contrary to the organic, living way most of us come up with family names for our kids. (To wit: my two kids’ names are in my signature: and [name_u]Antoine[/name_u] is called ‘Tanti’ nearly 100% of the time; [name_f]Cassia[/name_f] so far has been “Beebs.”)

A long prologue to say that if your heart wants [name_f]Birdie[/name_f], then full steam ahead for [name_f]Birdie[/name_f].

I have always liked the nn [name_f]Libby[/name_f] and also [name_f]Beth[/name_f].

What about [name_f]Elsie[/name_f]? That’s my favorite nn for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. It’s just so cute!

[name_f]Birdie[/name_f] and [name_f]Essie[/name_f] are both cute. I love [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and would use it if the need ever arose again. I been quietly searching for spunky nicknames for mostly home use. I have a friend [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] who goes by “Zizzy” and it fits her. I thought that [name_f]Zella[/name_f] is along the same lines. I was excited to find that Tib is considered a nickname for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] in some circles too. There are few names that have more official nicknames than [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. I am sure you will have no problem finding one that suits your little girl.
