Favourite Sci-Fi Guilty Pleasure Names

Hey!

I am a huge fan of both Sci-fi shows and baby names, so I thought I would start a forum on the topics together. To all those Sci-fi lovers out there, do you have any guilty pleasure names that come from/are related to Sci-fi shows? These are mine…

Girls:
[name_f]Kira[/name_f] (ST: DS9)
[name_f]Roslin[/name_f] (BSG)
[name_f]Melody[/name_f] ([name_m]Doctor[/name_m] Who)
[name_u]Echo[/name_u] (Dollhouse)
Caprica (BSG)
[name_f]Serenity[/name_f] (Firefly)
[name_f]Anwen[/name_f] (Torchwood)
[name_u]Seven[/name_u] (ST: VOY)
Aeryn (Farscape)
Kestra “Kes” (ST: TNG/ST: VOY)
[name_f]Athena[/name_f] (BSG)
Inara (Firefly)
[name_f]Astrid[/name_f] (Fringe)
[name_f]Atlantis[/name_f] (SG:A)

Boys:
[name_m]Magnus[/name_m] (Sanctuary)
Ronon (SG:A)
[name_m]Apollo[/name_m] (BSG)
Riker/[name_m]Ryker[/name_m] (ST: TNG)
[name_m]Fox[/name_m] (X-Files)
[name_m]Dax[/name_m] (ST: DS9)
[name_m]Archer[/name_m] (ST:[name_f]Enterprise[/name_f])
[name_m]Kirk[/name_m] (ST:TOS)
[name_m]Nolan[/name_m] (Defiance)
[name_u]Carter[/name_u] (SG1)

I love [name_u]River[/name_u] from Firefly (for a girl, just like her) but I don’t know if I could actually name my daughter [name_u]River[/name_u], as much as I love it! The character is so badass too.

Tyrol (BSG)!

And [name_u]River[/name_u], obvs.

Inara (Firefly) is just such a gorgeous name, and I adore the character, but I suspect I’d feel conflicted about naming an infant after a fictional prostitute, no matter how awesome she is.

[name_u]Ripley[/name_u]! So different from my usual taste in names, but [name_f]Ellen[/name_f] [name_u]Ripley[/name_u] is a badass and I’m a huge Alien fan (and a huge [name_f]Sigourney[/name_f] [name_m]Weaver[/name_m] fan as well). I believe that [name_f]Thandie[/name_f] [name_m]Newton[/name_m] named her daughter [name_u]Ripley[/name_u] after that character and I totally understand that.

Also, does Mako ([name_m]Mori[/name_m], from [name_m]Pacific[/name_m] Rim) count?

I love [name_u]River[/name_u], too! (I’m a big Dr. Who fan)

[name_m]Ianto[/name_m] (Torchwood)

[name_u]River[/name_u] (as in Firefly and DW) and [name_f]Anwen[/name_f] (Torchwood).

Another fan of [name_u]River[/name_u], inara, and many others I can’t remember. [name_u]Joss[/name_u] whedon has great character names. Any of his [name_f]Buffy[/name_f] characters, [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f], [name_f]Willow[/name_f], [name_m]Wesley[/name_m],…
I’m watching battlestar gallactica right now actually. I like the name adama when spoken (uh-dom-a) but written I still want to say a-dam-a. I’m really not so good at remembering many names when watching new shows so I don’t know other ones offhand on this show yet

A man they call [name_f]Jayne[/name_f]!

I can’t believe I forgot the name [name_u]River[/name_u]! It’s from [name_m]Doctor[/name_m] Who and Firefly. [name_u]Joss[/name_u] Whedon is a total boss at coming up with names for his characters.

@geeknamezyo— I get what you are saying. I think Inara is such a beautiful name that it might actually be usable…except for the space prostitute connection
@shvibziks— I never thought of the name [name_u]Ripley[/name_u] from Alien! Completely different from my regular style but would make a great GPN!
@anotherkate— I totally agree with you about the name [name_f]Adama[/name_f]. Before I heard [name_f]Adama[/name_f] spoken, I thought it was pronounced “a-dam-a” too.
@katieydenberg— I’ll be in my bunk

[name_u]Neo[/name_u] (Matrix)

Great topic

[name_f]Zara[/name_f] ( planet of the apes)
[name_f]Nova[/name_f] (PotA)
[name_m]Fox[/name_m] (x files)

[name_m]Ianto[/name_m] and [name_m]Jack[/name_m] (also SG1) from TW. Plus they are my favourite characters. As well [name_m]Alonso[/name_m], [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Melody[/name_f] and [name_f]Amy[/name_f] from [name_m]Doctor[/name_m] Who. I’ve been watching those three shows a lot lately.

Ooh, I’ve got a good one! Have any of you seen Orphan [name_m]Black[/name_m]? It’s a really awesome new show, but I think the character names might just be one of my favorite things about it.

We have [name_f]Sara[/name_f], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] ([name_f]Beth[/name_f]), and [name_f]Alison[/name_f]… but also:

[name_f]Cosima[/name_f]
[name_f]Helena[/name_f]
[name_f]Katja[/name_f]
[name_f]Aryanna[/name_f]
[name_m]Janika[/name_m]
[name_f]Delphine[/name_f]

[name_f]Cosima[/name_f] and [name_f]Delphine[/name_f] are so beautiful!

  • I really love [name_u]River[/name_u]. I loved it from Firefly, and now that I’ve seen [name_m]Doctor[/name_m] Who, I love it extra-much.
  • Some names from Wheel of Time are rather fun ([name_u]Mat[/name_u], Aviendha, [name_m]Elyas[/name_m])
  • [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] Marillier introduced me to some beautiful Irish names ([name_f]Sorcha[/name_f], [name_m]Colum[/name_m], [name_m]Diarmid[/name_m], etc) that I’d never heard before that point.
  • I really like [name_f]Charis[/name_f] and [name_u]Taliesin[/name_u] as well.
  • Supernatural provides lots of fun mythology/Bible-inspired names, like Castiel, [name_m]Ezekiel[/name_m], [name_m]Uriel[/name_m], Abbadon, [name_m]Balthazar[/name_m]. I notice the writers have a Thing for certain female names, though. The show has featured quite a few random females named [name_u]Andrea[/name_u] and [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]. But anyway, I mostly really love [name_u]Sam[/name_u]/[name_m]Samuel[/name_m]/[name_u]Sammy[/name_u] from Supernatural. It’s hardly a GP; it’s just that the show has made me love the name much more than I ever did before, haha. I fear that’d be kind of an odd inspiration to explain to a child.

I really love [name_f]Sally[/name_f] [name_f]Sparrow[/name_f] as a fn/mn combo, because of [name_f]Sally[/name_f] [name_f]Sparrow[/name_f] from [name_m]Doctor[/name_m] Who. I go back and forth on whether it would be over the top or not.

I love a lot of these!

One that I’ve found has stuck in my head is [name_f]Adria[/name_f], from SG1. Not the nicest character, but I love the sound of the name. And my dad’s name is [name_m]Adrian[/name_m] so it feels fitting

I also like Jadzia, but would probably never use it.
