Féilim/féileacán thoughts

Hey everyone!

I had my heart set on the name Féilim (fay-lim) but I thought of féileacán (fay-leh-kawn) which means butterfly for a name for a girl. I am Irish and live in Ireland so pronunciation shouldn’t be a problem but I still would like to know what people think of both names. Thanks!

Féilim is pretty - unexpected and light and pretty.

Féileacán is intriguing, but I do hear ‘failed unicorn’ in my brain - might just be a non-Irish perspective though

Féilim looks more streamlined. However, I prefer the sound of Féileacán.

I’m also [name_u]Irish[/name_u] and, unless you’re living in a niche community of fluent Gaelic speakers, Féileacán is going to be difficult for a lot of folks to pronounce. I’d say Féilim for a boy is a more realistic option. And I suppose I’m a bit biased since I do have a soft spot for Féilim - it is honestly such a beautiful boy name.

I like Féilim for its simple sound, and I agree it would be lovely on a boy. I like Féileacán too, for the sound and the meaning, but it would be difficult to say for non-natives.

Thanks for the response! I know féilim is more so a boys name but I just can’t see it on a boy at all. I think maybe because it begins with Fay/fae sound so all I can see is a little girl :frowning: maybe I need to think more of it on a boy. I think the pronunciation for the other name should be okay where I am and after looking it up I just realised that there doesn’t seem to be any other babies born with it so I guess if I use it then it won’t matter the gender for that. Thanks again though, you were very helpful.
