Female Role Models

Who would you want to name your daughters after? What kind of traits do you hope your girls will have? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like these women’s names or just who they are as people?

Yes and no. Definitely names to honor people, but not necessarily family members which most honor names come from.

I was thinking women who have changed the world or are changing the world. That could be a politician, or someone making a community better—just a woman you admire so much that you’d want your girls to be like them.

I’m not going to use these names (very unlikely) but I still love them!

Amelia [name_f]Earhart[/name_f]
[name_f]Audrey[/name_f] Hepburn
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_m]Roosevelt[/name_m]
[name_f]Grace[/name_f] E. [name_m]Harris[/name_m]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] [name_m]Butler[/name_m]
[name_f]Marina[/name_f] Popovich
[name_f]Odette[/name_f] Brailly

Honestly, and I’ve said this so many times on this forum-sorry, my #1 for this question is [name_f]Lilith[/name_f]. I want my kid to demand equality and respect, even if it means being the painted as the “bad guy,” as it did for the original [name_f]Lilith[/name_f]. I could go on and on about the mythology behind it, but I’ll leave it here for now.

So I guess what these all have in common is strength and bravery to be themselves, to fight for what’s right. I could seriously write a whole essay on this topic

I’ve always thought a name involving ‘[name_f]Rosa[/name_f]’ is a great choice in this instance.

I have Brontë and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] on my list to honour the Brontë sisters

I would use a few of these names if I could, but there are a couple of names I couldn’t use unfortunately. I’m sure there are a couple I’m missing on this list, so I may come back and add them later.

Our daughter is [name_f]Esther[/name_f] [name_f]Florence[/name_f] - although her name is significant for many reasons, [name_f]Queen[/name_f] [name_f]Esther[/name_f] and [name_f]Florence[/name_f] [name_u]Nightingale[/name_u] (we have lots of nurses in our lives) were included.

Harriet, after [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] Tubman, is considered for our second!

As someone in STEM, I would love to “somehow” honor a female scientist.

[name_f]Philippa[/name_f] Marrack (first name is in my UC as a middle for [name_f]Irene[/name_f])
[name_f]Virginia[/name_f] Apgar
[name_f]Florence[/name_f] [name_u]Sabin[/name_u]

Kamala. Honors my grandma and [name_f]Kamala[/name_f] [name_m]Harris[/name_m] (the politician I’ve supported since fifth grade).

Oh and to answer the “traits” question. I’ve always dreamt of having girls who are fiery and self-assured. This may be getting controversial haha but I would love to get calls from teachers saying that they are talking back or questioning authority. Obviously I’m not going to force her to be a lawyer or an engineer, but I would love for her to have the energy and assertiveness to do anything she chooses without worry. This doesn’t impact my name style that much - only in the sense that every name gives me distinct “images” of who they would be and I’ll tend to pick names that give me confident/fiesty vibes.

I feel that I would name my daughter [name_f]Narcissa[/name_f] [name_u]Jean[/name_u] Cobblepot after [name_f]Narcissa[/name_f] Malfoy from [name_u]Harry[/name_u] [name_m]Potter[/name_m]. She betrayed lord Voldemort by saying [name_u]Harry[/name_u] was dead just to save him. She knew that voldemort was evil and didn’t want to work for him any more. I feel that this name shows that there is good in anyone. And I like the name [name_u]Jean[/name_u] so I think it would be a good middle name.

Kinda. I’ll probably use [name_f]Esther[/name_f] and that a nod to [name_f]Queen[/name_f] [name_f]Esther[/name_f]. It would also be an honor name for either my Grandmother ([name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]) or my late cousin ([name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]). [name_f]Ida[/name_f] is also high on my list and although she wasn’t the inspiration, a lot of people think of [name_f]Ida[/name_f] B. [name_m]Wells[/name_m]. Oh and I might use [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] as a middle name to honor my favorite poet, [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] Plath.

I agree

I’m kinda go through an acting phase, and if it were to stick and change my life (who knows!) then [name_u]Jodie[/name_u] Sweetin is a huge inspiration for me.

Good call. I’d add [name_f]Jane[/name_f] Goodall as well.
