Hey Berries! Can we brainstorm on [name_u]Leighton[/name_u] for more feminine versions of that name? I love the sound it has, but it’s too masculine or unisex for my taste. My daughters name is 3 syllables, so i’m leaning towards [name_u]Leighton[/name_u], but a more feminine version and hopefully 3 syllables as well since our last name is very short.
I pronounce [name_u]Leighton[/name_u] as [name_m]Lay[/name_m]-ton.
I’ve seen Leightyn
I’m even okay with spelling the “Leight” portion differently, like “Leit” or “Leyt” but can we beautify it up?! I’m stuck in a rut
Leighten
Leightenn
Leightyn
Leightynn
Leiteyn
I think if you changed the Ton to Tyn OR Ten it may look more Feminine
Layten
Layten
Leyten
Laityn
I honestly think that changing the spelling makes it look misspelled and like you’re trying too hard to be creative, rather than making it look more feminine. If you read other threads from this site you’ll see a lot of pushback against unisex names that have been spelled differently to look more feminine- it’s your prerogative to use it of course, but just saying that a lot of people won’t like it.
What about [name_f]Leia[/name_f] which has a similar sound and is clearly feminine? Or [name_u]Leigh[/name_u] (though that’s generally pronounced “lee” and not “lay”). Or [name_u]Peyton[/name_u], which is technically unisex but is used a lot more on girls.
[name_u]Leighton[/name_u] has nice sounds to it, but it will be a nightmare for her going through school and working life. People will not know how to spell it and it will be frustrating. [name_m]How[/name_m] about something that sounds similar, and is more intrinsically feminine, like you wanted?
[name_f]Leonie[/name_f]
[name_f]Leia[/name_f]
[name_f]Layla[/name_f]
[name_f]Leanna[/name_f]
[name_f]Lorelei[/name_f]
If you are set on [name_u]Leighton[/name_u], I would stick with that spelling as it’s what everyone is used to seeing, but be prepared for people to call her [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-ton and [name_m]Light[/name_m]-ton…it’s a bit of a problematic name when it comes to spelling and pronounciation
I think greyblue’s suggestions look the most feminine (especially Laityn). I’ve seen [name_u]Peyton[/name_u] and [name_u]Payton[/name_u] on girls, so [name_m]Layton[/name_m] or [name_m]Leyton[/name_m] might be more the look you’re going for.
I agree with other posters that you’re better off finding an existing feminine name rather changing the spelling of a unisex name to look more feminine. I love the suggestion of [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] for you!
If I remember correctly, your daughter’s name is an uncommon word name with -lyn on the end. You could do something similar with [name_u]Leighton[/name_u], and try attaching a one-syllable feminine ending. Something like Leightonrose? This might accomplish what you’re looking for while matching nicely with her sister’s name.
[name_u]Leighton[/name_u] is a boy’s name. There isn’t a female version, just misspellings.
Thank you! yes, we tend to lean towards the uncommon names, the suggestions were all so helpful!
I wonder whether something like [name_f]Leontine[/name_f] (or [name_f]Leontyne[/name_f]) might work for you?
It’s not quite ‘[name_u]Leighton[/name_u]’, but it shares a lot of the same sounds, has a recognisably feminine ending, and has 3 syllables like your daughter’s name.
i like the ending on it, but not crazy about seeing the name leon in it. I worked on [name_u]Leighton[/name_u] hard, but agree with most of the posters about just finding another name that is feminine tought one for sure! Thank you so much!
