Few weeks to go... sibling to Rowan, ideas please!

I like more unusual, my husband tends towards more old fashioned/traditional. We found what feels to us like the perfect overlap with our son’s name [name]Rowan[/name]. Now we’re due with #2 soon and could use some inspiration. We’re pretty set on boy’s name - my husband’s top top choice is [name]Henry[/name], and though it’s a little common for me I do really like the feel and sound of it. Middle name will be Learson for boy (family name), our last name is similar to Fortner. Girls we are having a tougher time with. My current fave is [name]Matilda[/name] but husband is medium - not opposed, and likes nickname [name]Mattie[/name], but not 100% there. We have some other ideas below… middle name will be either [name]Kate[/name] or [name]Katherine[/name] after beloved mother-in-law recently passed away. Feedback on which names go better with [name]Kate[/name] vs. [name]Katherine[/name] for middle name also welcome!

Ok here are current lists - would love thoughts on these or other ideas

BOYS
[name]Henry[/name] Learson
[name]Felix[/name] Learson (last name starts with F and also 2 syllables, does that make [name]Felix[/name] bad choice?)
[name]Casper[/name] Learson
[name]Skye[/name] Learson
[name]Lorcan[/name] - just saw this and like it. Think would need to use another middle name though because [name]Lorcan[/name] Learson seems not right

GIRLS
[name]Matilda[/name] [name]Kate[/name] or [name]Katherine[/name]
[name]Edeline[/name] [name]Kate[/name] or [name]Katherine[/name]
[name]Adeline[/name] vs [name]Edeline[/name]?
[name]Gwendolen[/name] [name]Kate[/name] or [name]Katherine[/name]
[name]Acacia[/name] [name]Katherine[/name] (like that it’s a tree like [name]Rowan[/name])
[name]June[/name] [name]Katherine[/name]
[name]Mae[/name] [name]Katherine[/name]
[name]Madeline[/name], [name]Charlotte[/name] (both high on husband’s list, I think they’re a little too popular for my preference right now)

Is this an Aussie family? I ask because the Eureka Stockade was a famous part of Australian history and it would affect my suggestions.

rollo

No, it’s the name of our neighborhood in San [name]Francisco[/name]! But Eureka Stockade sounds interesting…

[name]Rowan[/name] is gorgeous  I love it on a boy!

I love [name]Henry[/name] and [name]Felix[/name] as brothers to [name]Rowan[/name], they both have the same cute, yet quirky feel as [name]Rowan[/name] does and I can imagine thm sounding so gorgeous together!

[name]Felix[/name] is on my favourites list, unfortunately I can’t really use it myself because it’s my closest friend’s favourite name for a boy, so she wants it for her son when she has one (if she can convince the father! He’s not keen :P). So I love to see others using it.

I’d probably pick [name]Henry[/name] though, if I had to pick one. For one, you’ve got the surname issue that will make the name sound a little gimicky. Also, the dual L sounds in [name]Felix[/name] Learson are a bit of a tongue twister. Honestly, these aren’t things that would normally bother me, but they seem to put most people off.

As for your girls names, I love [name]Rowan[/name] & [name]Matilda[/name] and [name]Rowan[/name] & [name]Adeline[/name] best. [name]Matilda[/name] was my #1 for a very long time and it’s still in my top 10, it’s very sweet and sophisticated, and there’s a number of nicknames for all types of people - [name]Mattie[/name], [name]Milla[/name], [name]Milly[/name], [name]Mia[/name], [name]Tilly[/name], [name]Tilda[/name], [name]Allie[/name] etc. I’d be worried about how much it would rise in popularity though.

I went for [name]Adeline[/name] instead of [name]Edeline[/name]. While I think [name]Edeline[/name] is really pretty (where did you get this from, may I ask?) and would be a lovely, unusual one to use in theory, I just think the problems you’re going to encounter will not be worth it. I can guarantee that in 99.9% of cases you’re going to get this -

Passerby: Oh she’s gorgeous, what’s her name?
You: [name]Edeline[/name].
Passerby: [name]Adeline[/name]?
You: No, [name]Edeline[/name].
Passerby: [name]Emmeline[/name]?

and so on. It’s just so much hassle, you may as well go with [name]Adeline[/name] as it’s equally lovely. Though, like [name]Matilda[/name] it will most likely also rise in popularity … I like [name]Matilda[/name] [name]Katherine[/name] and [name]Adeline[/name] [name]Kate[/name] best.

I also love [name]Acacia[/name] (I knew a girl named [name]Acacia[/name] [name]Rose[/name] when I was younger), but I don’t like that it’s also a tree. If you ever have another child, you’ll be bound to the tree theme. While this may be okay if you have another girl (you could go for [name]Juniper[/name] “[name]June[/name]”, since you do like [name]June[/name]) you might not be able to find a tree name you like for a boy. I think themes are usually best avoided.

I like [name]June[/name] and [name]Mae[/name] too, though I prefer [name]May[/name], but they just seemed to short to work for some reason. And I like your husband’s [name]Madeline[/name] and [name]Charlotte[/name], but they are very common.

I love [name]Henry[/name]. I was on my list for a long time and even though we think we decided on a name if we have a boy in 3 weeks - [name]Henry[/name] is definitely still up for grabs if our chosen name doesnt fit. Not sure if you like “[name]Harry[/name]” or “[name]Hank[/name]” but both are popular nicknames for [name]Henry[/name] - could be cool and gives you some options.

your other choices:

I am not sure about your other boy names - [name]Felix[/name] is cool but your last name is also an “F”; [name]Casper[/name] is cool too but . . . pales next to [name]Henry[/name] to me. Same for [name]Skye[/name]. I think [name]Lorcan[/name] has potential and I think I like it but I havent heard it before and need time to think about it. With [name]Rowan[/name], some names that come to mind:
[name]Callum[/name]
[name]Crew[/name]
[name]Hugo[/name]
[name]Piers[/name]
[name]Leif[/name]
[name]Breccan[/name]
[name]Rufus[/name]
[name]Milo[/name]
[name]Soren[/name]
[name]Spencer[/name]
[name]Cruz[/name]
[name]Joaquin[/name]
[name]Rafferty[/name]
Your girl names -

I love [name]Tilly[/name] for [name]Matilda[/name] and [name]Matilda[/name] goes well with [name]Kate[/name] and [name]Katherine[/name].
[name]Adeline[/name] vs [name]Edeline[/name]? - I dont like either I dont think - sorry. I think the “[name]Addie[/name]” names are too popular.
I also like [name]June[/name] a lot. Not sure about the other choices because [name]Matilda[/name] is such a stand out against your other choices. More girls names that come to mind:
[name]Annabelle[/name]
[name]Clementine[/name]
[name]Tessa[/name]
[name]Willa[/name]
[name]Agatha[/name]
[name]Scarlett[/name]
[name]Ivy[/name]
[name]Iris[/name]

[name]Hope[/name] this helps!!!

PS. Thanks for your thoughts on [name]Reed[/name]! I also had [name]West[/name] on my list for a little while.

I adore [name]Felix[/name]! I’m a fan of the alliteration, too. I was [name]Kristin[/name] K. until I married, and loved it. [name]Henry[/name] is lovely, aslo, but doesn’t have the spunk of [name]Felix[/name].

My favorite from your list of girls is [name]Gwendolen[/name] [name]Kate[/name], hands down. It seems dreamy and intellegent at the same time. [name]Love[/name] it!

BOYS
[name]Henry[/name] Learson-This is my favorite choice of your boys names. Nice and classic and will go well with [name]Rowan[/name] (which I love by the way)
[name]Felix[/name] Learson-I think [name]Felix[/name] and Learson sound great together and normally I like alliteration but it doesn’t work as well with some letters and I think F is one of those letters unfortunatley.
[name]Casper[/name] Learson-While I like this name it makes me think of [name]Casper[/name] the Friendly Ghost.
[name]Skye[/name] Learson-To me [name]Skye[/name] is all girl and I just can’t see it on a boy at all.
[name]Lorcan[/name]-This is a unique name and I actually like it alot. You are right though, [name]Lorcan[/name] Learson is a bit much. However I think that [name]Lorcan[/name] [name]Henry[/name] or [name]Lorcan[/name] [name]Felix[/name] would be good choices. I don’t think the alliteration of the F’s is so bad when it’s the middle and last name because you don’t use them as much as the first name. [name]Lorcan[/name] with either of those middle names would be my second choice for a boy.

GIRLS
[name]Matilda[/name] [name]Kate[/name] or [name]Katherine[/name]-I adore [name]Matilda[/name]! [name]Matilda[/name] [name]Katherine[/name] with the nickname [name]Mattie[/name] is fabulous!
[name]Edeline[/name] [name]Kate[/name] or [name]Katherine[/name]-I really do not care for [name]Edeline[/name] but if you were to use it I would use [name]Edeline[/name] [name]Kate[/name] because [name]Edeline[/name] [name]Katherine[/name] is a mouthful although as a general rule I prefer the longer version of the name. While I don’t really care for [name]Edeline[/name] I think [name]Edie[/name] would be a cute nickname.
[name]Adeline[/name] vs [name]Edeline[/name]?-I defintley like [name]Adeline[/name] better with the nickname [name]Addie[/name]. Again I would use [name]Kate[/name] as the middle name because [name]Katherine[/name] would be a mouthful with the first name.
[name]Gwendolen[/name] [name]Kate[/name] or [name]Katherine[/name]-I like [name]Gwendolen[/name] [name]Kate[/name] because [name]Katherine[/name] again with this name is a mouthful. However I prefer the spelling as [name]Gwendolyn[/name]. There are a variety of cute nicknames from [name]Gwendolen[/name] though…[name]Gwen[/name], [name]Wendy[/name]…[name]Winnie[/name]. All adorable.
[name]Acacia[/name] [name]Katherine[/name]-I really don’t like this one at all and I’m not sure how to pronounce [name]Acacia[/name].
[name]June[/name] [name]Katherine[/name]-[name]June[/name] has definatley been growning on me and I think it’s so cute. I’m not sure how I feel about [name]Katherine[/name] as it’s middle name though. I would pick something more along the lines of [name]June[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] or [name]June[/name] [name]Matilda[/name] I think sounds wonderful.
[name]Mae[/name] [name]Katherine[/name]-I love [name]Mae[/name]! I think it sounds very nice with [name]Katherine[/name].
[name]Madeline[/name], [name]Charlotte[/name]-While I like [name]Madeline[/name] I don’t really care for [name]Charlotte[/name] but you are right, both of these names are very popular. And I would think that if you used [name]Madeline[/name] you wouldn’t be able to use [name]Matilda[/name] in the future because [name]Maddie[/name] and [name]Mattie[/name] are way too similar. [name]Even[/name] if you didn’t call your child [name]Maddie[/name] someone in their lives would I’m sure.

[name]Favorite[/name] names: [name]Henry[/name] Learson and [name]Matilda[/name] [name]Katherine[/name]

Thank you all SO much, what great feedback and I love some of your other ideas. I ran [name]Lorcan[/name] by my husband this morning (just saw it last night) and it’s off the list - immediate reaction was Lorkin “Dorkin”! [name]Leif[/name] is a great idea to add to the list, though, we both like that one. Think [name]Henry[/name] and [name]Felix[/name] remain at the top of the boy list ([name]Felix[/name] F still up for debate)-- I like going to hospital with a few top ones even if one’s a favorite just in case.

The feedback on [name]Edeline[/name] is helpful too. I like that it’s more unusual than [name]Adeline[/name] but don’t want it to be confused all the time. Our friends who live in [name]London[/name] and are [name]German[/name] and Polish had it on their list for their daughter-that was the first we heard of it and I like the sound and nn [name]Edie[/name] but it might be too much of a pain for people to get. [name]Matilda[/name] still my favorite but all the other feedback is very helpful!

When I saw [name]Lorcan[/name] I thought of [name]Lachlan[/name] and [name]Liam[/name], both would make great brothers to [name]Rowan[/name]. (By the way I love [name]Rowan[/name] it has been my favourite boy name for years and I can’t wait to use it for my own!) I don’t like [name]Henry[/name] or [name]Felix[/name] to be honest, and [name]Casper[/name] makes me think of [name]Casper[/name] the friendly ghost. I’m not on board with either of hese trends I guess. As for your girls I don’t normally like [name]Matilda[/name] but [name]Matilda[/name] [name]Kate[/name] is so cute. I prefer [name]Adeline[/name] of [name]Edeline[/name].

[name]Hope[/name] this helps! good luck!

I think [name]Rowan[/name] and [name]Casper[/name] sound great together. [name]Henry[/name] has never grabbed my attention and is very popular in my neck of the woods. From your girl list, [name]June[/name] is absolutely lovely.

Since you have [name]Skye[/name] on your boy list, have you considered [name]Schuyler[/name]? I adore this name and THIS spelling (legitimate, not kreatif). I think it’s more substantial and you can always use [name]Sky[/name] as a nn. I love [name]Rowan[/name] and [name]Schuyler[/name] together as well.

[name]Matilda[/name] is a wonderful choice. A very popular choice here in Australia where the song Waltzing [name]Matilda[/name] is almost a national anthem

[name]Rowan[/name] and [name]Lorcan[/name] were my first choice but I see that’s now off the list. I love [name]Henry[/name] but I really liked [name]Felix[/name] with [name]Rowan[/name], maybe [name]Casper[/name]. For a girl, I love [name]Gwendolen[/name]! While I like [name]Charlotte[/name] and [name]Madeleine[/name], I agree that they may be too popular and I’m not sure I like them so much with [name]Rowan[/name].
